to butter both slices of bread in a sandwich?

Could you help with this debate, which arose during the frantic buttering of sandwiches for a children's party?

My Dsis thinks that you only butter one slice of bread in a sandwich; I think you need the buttery stickiness on both slices of bread, to make sure that the top slice adheres to the filling properly, and to make it tastier and less dry.

Can you help me prove that I'm being eminently reasonable here...?

definitely on both sides! otherwise the unbuttered slice will just fall off surely??

Yanbu! I have a friend who doesn't put butter on either slice of bread! A sandwich needs butter on both slices IMO

I go further when I make my own: mayo on the top slice and Dijon mustard on the bottom slice. It's like the last days of the Roman Empire round here, in sandwich terms, anyway.

Depends on filling. Egg mayonnaise no butter, ham butter both, something with salad with mayonnaise on top then just butter bottom.

DS doesn't put butter on sandwiches at all, but I think that's just laziness rather than anything else.

Yes correct butter temperature is essential otherwise you end up with holes in your bread whilst trying to butter it. I've learnt the hard way on that one .

What sort of sandwiches are you making that you're putting butter on them? The only sandwich I've ever put butter on is a grilled cheese, that if you don't butter both sides of that, the bread won't brown.

I put mayo on ham sandwiches, and mustard on turkey sandwiches, but not butter.

I would always put butter or something else which will hold the sandwich together on both sides- I'm not keen on butter so use mayo/mustard/houmous/pesto/pickle depending on the filling (or jam/nutella for ds!)
