to butter both slices of bread in a sandwich?

Could you help with this debate, which arose during the frantic buttering of sandwiches for a children's party?

My Dsis thinks that you only butter one slice of bread in a sandwich; I think you need the buttery stickiness on both slices of bread, to make sure that the top slice adheres to the filling properly, and to make it tastier and less dry.

Can you help me prove that I'm being eminently reasonable here...?

definitely on both sides! otherwise the unbuttered slice will just fall off surely??

stinkysox · 14/01/2014 14:30

Both

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/01/2014 14:30

Neither. Butter in sandwiches makes me want to vomit. You are both BU.

Iheartcustardcreams · 14/01/2014 14:31

Yanbu! I have a friend who doesn't put butter on either slice of bread! A sandwich needs butter on both slices IMO

openerofjars · 14/01/2014 14:32

You are right; she is wrong.

I go further when I make my own: mayo on the top slice and Dijon mustard on the bottom slice. It's like the last days of the Roman Empire round here, in sandwich terms, anyway.

mumofboyo · 14/01/2014 14:32

You butter (or mayo) on both slices of bread. I've never heard of only doing one - that just seems odd!

Spottybra · 14/01/2014 14:32

Both.

How do siblings disagree on this? Surely its the way you are brought up?

I can't stand shop bought sandwiches for the no butter reason.

cerealqueen · 14/01/2014 14:33

Same issue wiTh my DP!!!! Both, the butter stops the bread going soggy with any filling too.

Why bother with just one or is it laziness?

Binkyridesagain · 14/01/2014 14:33

If I am making for myself then its only the one side. If I am making for others then both.

jacks365 · 14/01/2014 14:34

Depends on filling. Egg mayonnaise no butter, ham butter both, something with salad with mayonnaise on top then just butter bottom.

IsabellaMilborne · 14/01/2014 14:35

We need to ask our mother, Spottybra; we have no idea how we've ended up differently on this one. I suspect that my real sister has been substituted for a sub-standard alien clone.

Both or nothing

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/01/2014 14:40

Both. Anything else is just plain weird.

DaftSkunk · 14/01/2014 14:41

Butter both pieces, most definitely.

stardustoddity · 14/01/2014 14:42

Both bu tit needs to be the right temperature so you can do it really thinly.

stardustoddity · 14/01/2014 14:43

But it, not Bu tit!

mrsminiverscharlady · 14/01/2014 14:43

Why on earth wouldn't you butter both

DS doesn't put butter on sandwiches at all, but I think that's just laziness rather than anything else.

wonderingsoul · 14/01/2014 14:44

both.. why wouldnt you.. surely the point of the butter is to make the sandwhich not dry....

BlingBang · 14/01/2014 14:44

Both sides unless I'm really counting the calories.

JeanSeberg · 14/01/2014 14:44

I swear to god this is the craziest thing I've ever read on the internet!

DaftSkunk · 14/01/2014 14:45

Yes correct butter temperature is essential otherwise you end up with holes in your bread whilst trying to butter it. I've learnt the hard way on that one Grin.

steff13 · 14/01/2014 14:47

What sort of sandwiches are you making that you're putting butter on them? The only sandwich I've ever put butter on is a grilled cheese, that if you don't butter both sides of that, the bread won't brown.

I put mayo on ham sandwiches, and mustard on turkey sandwiches, but not butter.

BeautifulBlondePineapple · 14/01/2014 14:48

We only butter one side in this house. The other side is for chutney / mayo / philly / other spready stuff.

Woah, Beautiful, that is some serious out-of-the-box sandwich making going on there. I salute you!

newlark · 14/01/2014 14:58

I would always put butter or something else which will hold the sandwich together on both sides- I'm not keen on butter so use mayo/mustard/houmous/pesto/pickle depending on the filling (or jam/nutella for ds!)
