to butter both slices of bread in a sandwich?

Could you help with this debate, which arose during the frantic buttering of sandwiches for a children's party?

My Dsis thinks that you only butter one slice of bread in a sandwich; I think you need the buttery stickiness on both slices of bread, to make sure that the top slice adheres to the filling properly, and to make it tastier and less dry.

Can you help me prove that I'm being eminently reasonable here...?

I butter one side if we're running out of spread or if its something like tuna &mayo.
Something like jam is ok on one, but cheese I think you need both.

If I was frantically buttering bread for a dcs party, running out of time, i'd do one slice if I could.

ohmymimi · 14/01/2014 21:06

crowler - is that because you're a forriner? Wink

miaowmix · 14/01/2014 21:11

How is it a sandwich without butter? That makes NO sense. Really.

miaowmix · 14/01/2014 21:11

obv both sides

Crowler · 14/01/2014 21:12

I'm a forriner. Yes. Guilty. No butter please!

I do like cream cheese on a sandwich.

Primadonnagirl · 14/01/2014 21:16

Can I ask you all to picture a chip butty made with buttered bread so the butter runs when you bite into it???? It's impossible not to want one!

Crowler · 14/01/2014 21:21

By chip butty, you mean a sandwich of chips i.e. potato?

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/01/2014 21:23

EXACTLY Crowler Grin

nopanicandverylittleanxiety · 14/01/2014 21:25

yadnbu - both is must. ideally with full fat lurpak, fish and chips .....

WitchWay · 14/01/2014 21:26

If the butter's cold I butter one slice as it's rather too thick & put a smear of mayo on the other. I have had sandwiches using mashed ripe avocado instead of the butter - yum

RuinedAndNotorious · 14/01/2014 21:26

I only ever butter one side. And I'm not your sister, honest! I had no idea I was in such a minority on this issue.

Crowler · 14/01/2014 21:26

Sorry, you've lost me here with the potato sandwich. You're kind of disrespecting the sandwich in this case.

WhenWhyWhere · 14/01/2014 21:28

Bread

Butter

Ham

Bread

a posh hamwidge, for those in the know

Primadonnagirl · 14/01/2014 21:30

Yes a chip sarnie! bread buttered, fill with chips salt and vinegar if you wish and then another slice of buttered bread...no if you are low carbing obvs!

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/01/2014 21:35

Oh wait - no crowler I was agreeing with you re no butter on sandwiches!

Not a chip sandwich kind of person either.

1974rach · 14/01/2014 21:36

drool

I REALLY want a chip butty....

thick sliced white
butter
salty and vinegary chips

squish samidge till butter drips out and runs right down to your elbows Grin

ooooh nowt better

coffeespoons · 14/01/2014 21:40

You butter both sides. And if you want your pickle/chutney/cranberry sauce separate from the butter, you put it in between layers of meat or other substance in the sandwich for true perfection.

WitchWay · 14/01/2014 21:40

mmm chip butty - with a cup of tea

Primadonnagirl · 14/01/2014 21:43

I am sorry to have lowered the tone of the thread!

1974rach · 14/01/2014 21:45

gotta be a mug of builders tea though - none of that namby pamby darjeeling malarkey

ohmymimi · 14/01/2014 21:59

crowler - next you'll be dissing the fish finger sandwich! A sandwich made with hot chips, loads of butter and tomato sauce is a gastronomic wonder.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2014 22:06

Chip butty!!!

How mean to mention it at this time of night :(

AwfulMaureen · 14/01/2014 22:10

I only butter one side. I think two buttered is over the top and bordering on gluttony. Blush Sorry but it's true! As for the top falling off...no it does not! You just have to hold it properly!

Huitre · 14/01/2014 22:28

Chip butty! I want one! Actually, I would settle for plain chips and butter. Butter is so very lovely.

Also, what is the point of buttering any of it if you can have a non-buttered side? I mean, why not just have dry bread, you weirdos? Butter both sides or none, IMO.

Rubybrazilianwax · 14/01/2014 22:34

Both. Times may be hard but we're not at that stage yet
