To not put the cover on the duvet?

hestergraysgarden · 13/01/2014 21:02

DS woke at 4.30am. After doing the rest of the housework and the weekly shop I washed all the bedding. DS refused to nap and consequently had an early evening meltdown. Then I did his bath, put him to bed, and cooked dinner.

I've put the fitted sheet on the bed and all the pillow cases but I cannot be bothered with the faff of putting the cover on the duvet single handedly.

Is there a proper medical reason why I should?

it takes 2 minutes and is easier to wash a cover than an entire duvet. tired schmired - get to it! Wink

ikeaismylocal · 13/01/2014 21:05

One night won't matter, I think it's more for the longevity of the duvet rather than the safety of the child.

You probably could have put the duvet cover on in the time it took you to post and read the replies

hestergraysgarden · 13/01/2014 21:07

You are all annoyingly logical. I am going to put the duvet cover on now.

If DS wakes up (co-sleeper cot) I'm posting him to y'all.

Unless you have a gigantic washing machine, no concerns about electricity costs and it can be tumbled, I'd put a cover on. As waffly says, much easier to wash.

My DP is one of those who thinks single-handed duvet cover fitting is a faff & I don't get it. Turn duvet cover inside out, put hands in & grab corners, then grab corresponding corners of duvet & shake like buggery. Job done.

GlitzAndGiggles · 13/01/2014 21:08

I always turn the cover inside out then get the corners of the duvet and throw it over. Takes 20 seconds

sharonosaurus · 13/01/2014 21:09

Yes, turn it inside out - takes seconds.

ikeaismylocal · 13/01/2014 21:11

Oh gosh, didn't realise he's asleep, no!! Don't do it!

hestergraysgarden · 13/01/2014 21:12

Yes, yes, I know the trick with the corners of the duvet. Did I mention how bloody noisy my duvet cover is? Seriously, I think it is made out of that funny crinkly material that several of DS's little picture books are made of...

Put it on! Duvet without a cover makes my skin itch to just think about it Grin

hillbilly · 13/01/2014 21:14

No no don't! He's asleep!

sharonosaurus · 13/01/2014 21:15

Blanket instead then Grin

You are forgiven.

Liara · 13/01/2014 21:15

I hate duvet covers. I have told dh that I am planning to get rid of all duvets as I can't be bothered to put on the covers. Now he does it (or at least we do it together).

I would not contemplate it while a baby is sleeping! Shock the swearing would wake him up

hestergraysgarden · 13/01/2014 21:17

Actually it feels quite nice. Our old one was horrible and scratchy and about a million togs. This one is quite silky and lightweight.

It's either this or the cat blanket Grin

Any duvets already in covers on other beds you can use for tonight?

hestergraysgarden · 13/01/2014 21:24

I had contemplated stealing the spare room duvet from DH, but he is sleeping at the moment. It would be mean of me. He's quite a nice DH (although I note, from an earlier glance at 'Threads I'm On', that he has been surfing Mumsnet on my laptop and using my login to dispense HR advice Confused)

God, I HATE putting the duvet cover on! I've been known to stick on the sheet and pillow cases and then put the duvet cover in between us and the duvet.

AnotherStitchInTime · 13/01/2014 21:26

You could always do what we did when we were kids. Put the duvet cover down the stairs with the open end at the top. Grab duvet and crawl into cover. Slide to bottom holding duvet.

Oh so much fun.

Or you could just do the inside out corners trick, takes only a minute.

LittleBabySqueakSqueak · 13/01/2014 21:28

Use a top sheet and bedspread? Tucked in nice and snug and no duvet cover required. More bastard sheets to iron, though.

CrohnicallySick · 13/01/2014 21:38

My arms aren't long enough to do our duvet cover by myself- king size bed and I'm a short arse with short arms. If I grab the corners and shake it all just bundles up in the middle. I have to do it in sections which isn't as effective and takes much longer.

Or I make DH do it.

In your situation I'd take the duvet out of the bedroom, put the cover on, then take it back in. Hopefully you won't wake him with rustling/wafting that way. I couldn't sleep with a duvet and no cover, it's just wrong!

hestergraysgarden · 13/01/2014 21:45

People of Mumsnet.

Fear not.

I have put on the duvet cover. DS remains asleep. Order has been restored.

CrohnicallySick · 13/01/2014 21:46

Thank goodness, we can all sleep easy tonight. Including you. Unless of course, DD decides to wake up for the day at 5 bloody 30 again.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 13/01/2014 21:48

Wow, love it another! must try that one. I've given up doing my kingsized and it's dp's job doesn't get done often enough therefore

Anansio · 13/01/2014 21:48

I have been known, in extremes of exhaustion, to sleep inside duvet cover like a sleeping bag, on top of the mattress and under the duvet.

YourMotherChucksRocksInHull · 13/01/2014 21:51

Never mind the duvet cover - your DH logs onto mumsnet and uses your username to post stuff? Shock

YourMotherChucksRocksInHull · 13/01/2014 21:51

Anansio - that is inspired!
