AIBU to think I'm the last person left alive who airs rooms?

I like to open the bedroom window for half an hour or so in the morning to let out DH's noxious nocturnal fumes the stale air. All my friends think this is a bizarre eccentricity: right up there with a penis beaker. Apparently, airing rooms went out with twin tubs and Formica, but I think the room smells lovely & fresh after a good airing Smile.

Now I feel like a tragic throwback: the last Neanderthal watching nervously as the smart-arse Homo sapiens start rubbing sticks together and filing the corners off a perfectly good square wheel. Am I really the last living airer?

Hiberno, god knows. I stick my fingers in my ears when the Raspberry Pi is mentioned. I may like my numbers, but I don't do code. [luddite]

Apparently you can make it into a weather station, if you attach the correct sensors. I didn't tell you that.

My heating is on for an hour between 6 and 7 am to heat the water for a shower/dishes and to take the chill off the house. Windows get opened when i get out of the shower and stay open til it starts to look dark (about 4ish) heating comes on at half four for an hour to heat water for dcs baths and dishes and to warm house a bit for evening.

Heating, it doesn't waste much to air the rooms because the heat is stored in the walls (and books in this house). It's when walls get cold that you have problems- half an hour of clean air sweeping through isn't going to chill the house down permanently (nobody under 25 gets this though).

i have been insprired by this thread . started airing daily, the house seems better for it

HoratiaDrelincourt · 17/01/2014 12:22

Thants houses can smell without pets or smokers. I have three sons...

I need to air bedrooms because they smell farty stale in the morning, and to keep the moisture level down. I air downstairs to clear cooking smells.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/01/2014 12:27

Thants - houses most definitely can smell without airing.

barbarian exactly. Which is why all this turning the heating on for an hour here and there is utter idiocy - the fabric of the house never gets warm.

CosyTeaBags · 17/01/2014 12:37

I'm currently airing the whole house because I made fish pie last night and the kitchen honks!

Inspired by this thread, I've just pulled the duvet back to air the bed as well

FreakoidOrganisoid · 17/01/2014 17:25

Agreed ali. I have my heating on constant (on lowish apart from in the eve when I'm sat still and whack it up) and my bills are significantly lower than when I used to put it on for a couple of hours here and there. And that's with me opening windows every day.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/01/2014 17:44

Hi Freak :) How's life?

JapaneseMargaret · 17/01/2014 17:45

Unless you smoke or have pets the house won't smell.

Why do you think this?

There are all sorts of things inside houses besides animals and fags (which, I'd venture, most people don't have) that cause odours. Not necessarily strong/bad odours, per se .... but they'd definitely build up over time without airing.

annieorangutan · 17/01/2014 18:04

Agree thants peoples houses smell if not aired.

Thants · 17/01/2014 18:07

Non airers don't keep their house in a vacuum! We just don't want it being very cold in winter Grin my friends don't open their windows in winter and the only house that smells is the one who smokes and has cats.

1974rach · 17/01/2014 18:14

I love an aired house and I cannot wait until we move to a house so I can dry my washing on the line. nothing nicer than freshly washed sheets that have been drief outside Grin Grin
