AIBU to think I'm the last person left alive who airs rooms?

I like to open the bedroom window for half an hour or so in the morning to let out DH's noxious nocturnal fumes the stale air. All my friends think this is a bizarre eccentricity: right up there with a penis beaker. Apparently, airing rooms went out with twin tubs and Formica, but I think the room smells lovely & fresh after a good airing Smile.

Now I feel like a tragic throwback: the last Neanderthal watching nervously as the smart-arse Homo sapiens start rubbing sticks together and filing the corners off a perfectly good square wheel. Am I really the last living airer?

I always do this, much to the annoyance of DH who likes windows closed in winter! Smile
I'll go round the house in the morning throwing all the windows open for an hour or so even if it's minus numbers outside Grin
It freshens the house up and lets fresh, crisp air IN, and old air out! What's not to like?!

ParsingFancy · 10/01/2014 16:20

We've gone all quantitative and got little humidity monitors for a couple of quid.

When we open the bedroom window in the morning, it plummets from 80% humidity to 45% in about 5 mins, if the weather's right. Close the window, and it settles to about 65% humidity.

We do it when we're finished in a room for hours.

So bedroom in the morning, living room last thing at night.

I have housecats. And a dog. Airing is a must-do.

Scuttlebutter · 10/01/2014 16:39

Another one here who airs beds thoroughly each morning. When we get up, curtains are opened, duvet neatly folded back, and pillows given a good shake and straightened. If window not already open (as it is for most of the year) it's opened wide. Stays that way for a couple of hours, then bed is made, so room looks tidy, fresh and welcoming. Bathrooms are aired thoroughly with windows open in all but blizzard conditions. Downstairs, also aired regularly. It's essential to minimise condensation, and reduce horrible smells. I really notice if we go into an unaired home - it smells disgusting.

peking · 10/01/2014 16:39

I thought bathrooms and kitchens HAD to be aired, or you'd get a build-up of damp and oil and muck and ergh - on the windows and walls if nothing else.

My DM never opens her windows and never puts on the heating and it drives me nuts. She has black mould all up her walls in every room, that she insists is just "dirt" :(

Confused

I have all my windows open from i get up til it starts getting dark!

People who dont- their homes must stink and feel so stuffy!

Cat98 · 10/01/2014 16:44

I have our bedroom and bathroom windows open a little pretty much all year round.
I try and air the other rooms for 10 mins or so once a day.
I read that the most effective way of preventing damp is to have the windows open and the heating on low! Seems counter-intuitive, but damp and condensation are horrid ( had it in our old house, mould - bleurgh)

HoratiaDrelincourt · 10/01/2014 16:47

Ooh thanks Parsing - DH is a sucker for empirical evidence so I shall use your numbers to support my airing "habit".

KentKate · 10/01/2014 17:08

What is a penis beaker?

VoyageDeVerity · 10/01/2014 17:11

God I thought it was the norm! You must air the house every day.

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/01/2014 17:16

Not only do I air every day but I facilitate a through draft by wedging doors open. I've always done this, can't stand musty rooms. I do this before I go to work (heating off on timer) and close them (except bathrooms and bedrooms) when I get home Smile

ParsingFancy · 10/01/2014 17:17

Get him a new toy, Horatio.

Though you may want to beat him to death with it after a few weeks of "Ooh, we need to open the window again in 3 hours' time for another 6 mins, unless there's a cross-breeze in which case 2.5 mins will do."

HoratiaDrelincourt · 10/01/2014 17:44

Sod him - I want one!

You're right, though. I anticipate graphs.

AnyoneforTurps · 10/01/2014 17:47

Ooo, humidity monitor..

morethanpotatoprints · 10/01/2014 17:48

We open all our windows for as long as possible.
Any damp or smells go and then the house is not only fresh but when the heating comes on its warmer quicker.
I thought most people did this.

ohcluttergotme · 10/01/2014 17:51

I do this every day if I can for an hour. Sometimes think neighbours must think I'm mad as it's freezing but house always feels better after and I always think you'll sleep better in a well aired room.
Love the summer months when I leave doors and windows open all day long

ParsingFancy · 10/01/2014 17:54

DP has mentioned involving the Raspberry Pi...

And obviously I didn't fill in a spreadsheet for the whole first year of our solar panel, oh no not me.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 10/01/2014 17:56

Don't talk to me about the Raspberry Pi

Are you me?

And yy that dry air heats up faster than damp air.

hiddenhome · 10/01/2014 17:56

We have windows open all year round. We don't use the central heating, so no heat lost. I can't stand stuffy, smelly rooms and have to have fresh air through all rooms at all times.

EmmaFreudsGivingMeJip · 10/01/2014 18:23

I like to air rooms but only for 5 mins or I panic about spiders coming in Blush

wobblyweebles · 10/01/2014 18:32

My house breathes just fine without needing airing. If you sit by the windows in the sitting room you can feel the draught.

peking · 10/01/2014 18:35

Oh yes, I heard spiders like to come in at night to the warmth via open windows. So although I love sleeping with an open window, in their breeding season I keep them closed :(

impatienceisavirtue · 11/01/2014 00:11

I mean to do it a lot more than I do. Possibly bullshit, but I vaguely remember it going a way towards preventing damp/condensation build up etc.

HibernoCaledonian · 11/01/2014 00:38

What's that about the RaspberryPi?

Topaz25 · 11/01/2014 14:36

There's nothing wrong with airing rooms, it prevents damp and stops rooms smelling musty. I need to start airing our house out more, the only thing is I have indoor cats so it's like a game of musical chairs moving them out of each room so I can air the rooms out one at a time!
