To eat breakfast now to save time in the morning

I'm trying to adjust to being back at work after a 3 year baby-break, and I'm struggling with getting out of the house at 7.30.
I have had a shower and washed my hair, made my lunch, laid out my clothes, and am now soaking some oats for porridge, but maybe I should just cook and eat it now?

You could try it, but then if you are anything like me you would be hungry again come the morning. Grin You would then have some more porridge when you get up.

Good luck with going back to work. I hope it goes smoothly.

RandyRudolf · 08/01/2014 22:18

Wear your clothes to bed, that way you'll be dressed and ready to go Grin

whois · 08/01/2014 22:20

If I eat later at night before bed it does keep me full enough to make it to work before needing breakfast. So maybe OP :-)

JollyGolightly · 08/01/2014 22:23

You are all very kind to give this even a moment's thought.

Randy I did that! Was wearing breastfeeding bra, black vest and pants, woke up a bit late, put proper clothes on top and started running. But to plan it that way seems somehow wrong.

I eat a banana or fruit at home to stop my blood sugar from dropping & then eat porridge at work.

JollyGolightly · 08/01/2014 22:36

I used to eat breakfast at my old work but it doesn't seem to be the done thing where I am now. Also I have loads to do as soon as I get in.

This really narks me. You should be able to eat when you need/want to eat, not everybody is the same. I like to eat little and often. I hate the way society/the workplace dictates stuff like this. Fair enough, some jobs it would be impossible to do but in your bog standard office it shouldn't be an issue.

AlpacaPicnic · 08/01/2014 22:53

I have been wondering if I would be committing some terrible social faux pas by eating porridge on the bus in the morning...?

I could nuke it before I leave, put it in one of those big thermal flasks... The bus ride is only supposed to take 20 minutes but there is almost always a 10 - 15 minute queue to get onto the main road (via the roundabout of hell) so I could eat my breakfast then!

JollyGolightly · 08/01/2014 22:56

I agree up to a point but I'm a teacher! And because I'm part time and do the cover and ASN I have 8 different things to plan and organise resources for, which is why the morning before the kids arrive is precious.

Sleep in the car or on the bus

JollyGolightly · 08/01/2014 22:58

alpaca what a perfect username for a porridge munching commuter.

JollyGolightly · 08/01/2014 22:59

If I could just evolve to not need sleep at all, everything would be achievable.

I've dropped breakfast and don't really miss it. If I'm really hungry I'll have something, but usually not.

Several of our teachers/other staff take in a piece of fruit to eat at morning break and one even has her own full fruit bowl in the staffroom. :)

Dahlen · 08/01/2014 23:00

At the risk of sounding like your mum, go to bed earlier and get up earlier. Wink

I find that the less rushed I am, the less stressful everything is and the easier I find it to get up (stress will make you feel more tired than sleep deprivation IMO).

Congratulations on the job BTW. Smile

TheGreatHunt · 08/01/2014 23:02

Go to bed earlier.

Wake up earlier.

MinesAPintOfTea · 08/01/2014 23:03

Fry some bacon and pop it in a roll the night before? I don't know whether you could give it 30 secs in the microwave to warm it up though.

JollyGolightly · 08/01/2014 23:03

dahlen you do sound like her, and yes I will. If ds2 could learn not to wake up so often in the night, that would help also.

soundevenfruity · 08/01/2014 23:06

What about showering and washing head the night before? Have you tried making a smoothie in a blender and take it with you to the station or car? You can add presoaked oats, seeds, frozen fruits, avocado etc.

wobblyweebles · 08/01/2014 23:07

I wish 'go to bed earlier' was the answer. If I do that I lie awake from 4am till 6am and am just as knackered as if I went to bed later.

Dahlen · 08/01/2014 23:08

Ah, if you're still having night wakings, I sympathise. Brew

SashaOfSiberia · 08/01/2014 23:12

Smoothie or snack bar or both for breakfast. My DH makes a smoothie the night before, puts it a cup in the fridge so in the morning just oust grabs it on his way out, keeps him going until later on.

His smoothies are basically a a healthy breakfast liquidised, will include banana, yogurt, oats, honey and berries. Also he makes some with milk and peanut butter and chia seeds. Lots of different options online.

Oh I have three amazing 'make ahead' breakfasts. I used to have a long commute to work so would eat in the car ( yes I know that's a bit dangerous). Anyway one of them is this and it is amazing:
www.sugarfreemom.com/recipes/personal-sized-baked-oatmeal-with-individual-toppings-gluten-free-diabetic-friendly/

I make with a whole banana not half, coconut milk, brown sugar not honey and stir thru dried fruit and nuts rather than have a 'topping' ( cranberries and macadamia is my favourite). You can freeze them and so bake a big batch and then in the morning just nuke one for 30 secs in the microwave and eat on your way out of the door.

I worked out the calories in one for my size of muffin tin with my additions and it was around 200, so that plus a glass of orange juice or something should take you through to mid morning.

Also a favorite of mine was to make a batch of three big smoothies with oats in. On Sunday night I would make a batch that would fill three plastic pint glasses nearly. Cover with cling film. Then on Monday to Wednesday grab and cup and straw and drink in the way to work. You have to make at least the night before to allow the oats to soak. This wasn't very expensive using cheap plain yog, fruit juice, frozen fruit and value oats.

Fuck, I forgot to put clothes out for the morning and now I'm lying in bed pissing around on MN whilst I should be sleeping
