to think this was not funny

DS1 had a school friend over and I found out that his friend had been taking sweets out of our treat tin and had talked DS into doing it with him. My friend told him off in a light hearted manner but it wasn't enough IMO. I told DS off when they had left told him it was wrong and not to be pressured into doing silly things. I would have been annoyed and embarrassed if DS had done this when visiting someone AIBU?

It's funny

DaddyPigsMistress · 06/01/2014 21:39

He sneaked some sweets not the crown jewels.

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/01/2014 21:43

She may well have told him off more harshly at home. And probably was embarrassed.

What was she meant to do? Whip her belt off and smack him with it?

heatseeker · 06/01/2014 21:46

of course not! but she is very laid back and doubt anything else was said about it. Just don't like the idea of other kids going into my kitchen and helping themselves.

Children sneaking sweets? Shock horror. I am sure they were both egging each other on and were equally to blame.

littlewhitebag · 06/01/2014 21:48

What age are they?

ChippingInWadesIn · 06/01/2014 21:49

He should have been told off properly, it's rude and naughty - he's school age, so should have known better but you didn't tell your DS off until they left, so not too sure which leg you are standing on here.

Bowlersarm · 06/01/2014 21:50

YABU. Tempted to say 'is that all you've got to worry about?' Sorry OP, but it's not a big deal.

heatseeker · 06/01/2014 21:51

The friend instigated it and yes ds joined in its not crime of the century I just don't think it is funny.

OP posts:
Upcycled · 06/01/2014 21:54

How do you know the friend instigated, did you see anything?
And why you didn't tell your son off in front of the friends?
At very least you would pass the message to your friend and her son how you like things to be in your house to avoid future problems.

SPsFifthConyoIsTheBestConyo · 06/01/2014 21:55

I would have thought it was funny. Children nicking sweets is nothing.

I remember doing it with friends. Never mattered who instigates it

littlewhitebag · 06/01/2014 21:55

I also think your reaction at the time would guide how your friend dealt with this. Did you brush it off or were you angry? How does your DS usually access the treat jar?

LucilleBluth · 06/01/2014 21:57

YABU......and a miserable git.

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2014 21:58

I told DS off when they had left

What makes you think she didn't do the same?

heatseeker · 06/01/2014 21:59

I did say to DS before they left that you shouldn't have done that. I know he instigated it because he does it at home.

Did you never have sleepovers and do a midnight fridge raid?

Rite of passage.

littlewhitebag · 06/01/2014 22:01

What did they take and how old are they?

heatseeker · 06/01/2014 22:01

No I didn't perhaps that is where I am going wrong!

OP posts:
Sweetishdelight · 06/01/2014 22:02

YANBU and you are right, it's not funny. BUT ... You don't know for sure who instigated it. You don't know what your friend said to her child once they were home. You waited until she was gone to reprimand your son, she may have done the same. A reprimand is what it is- it doesn't (and shouldn't) need to be done for show. You were absolutely correct in the way you dealt with it. That's all that needs to be said - how your friend deals with her child is her business.

hoobypickypicky · 06/01/2014 22:04

YABU. I would be embarrassed and annoyed with my child if he took sweets or any other foodstuffs while at someone else's house and without at least asking, or better still waiting to be offered. It's rude and badly behaved, not funny, cheeky or cute, to help themselves.

hoobypickypicky · 06/01/2014 22:05

I meant YA N BU!

RandyRudolf · 06/01/2014 22:05

YANBU, I agree with you OP.

RaspberryRuffle · 06/01/2014 22:06

YabUptight. You've told off DS, let it go.
