To say the wizard of oz is vastly superior to Mary Poppins.

Having endured enjoyed both films over Christmas with the kids, I think that Mary Poppins is a little bit lame. The songs and effects in Wizard of Oz piss all over supercafragalistic quote frankly.

You could certainly have ruby slippers. But are you sure you are suited to someone who does not want to skip down the yellow brick aisle accompanied by munchkins?

Lj8893 · 04/01/2014 12:36

reviving it is a question I ask myself everyday. Sad

CiderBomb · 04/01/2014 12:36

I love Oliver! Didn't see it at all this Christmas though.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 04/01/2014 12:44

Where does bed knobs and broomsticks fit in with this thread

Lj8893 · 04/01/2014 12:47

I love bed knobs and broomsticks!!!!

revivingsnowshower · 04/01/2014 12:49

Oh yes love bedknobs and broomsticks. Still prefer Mary Poppins though.

Bertrude · 04/01/2014 12:51

Bedknobs and broomsticks fits into this thread as being vastly superior to all of the aforementioned films. HTH Grin

blibblibs · 04/01/2014 13:00

Christmas isn't christmas without watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang either.

Mumraathenoisylion · 04/01/2014 13:01

YABVU.....however return to Oz is on a par with MP

Lj8893 · 04/01/2014 15:01

Return to oz is scary!!!!

ProfessorDent · 04/01/2014 15:16

It doesn't have to be either/or.

But both films do seem to go on forever, I guess Poppins is a bit more episodic in its narrative.

I love them both. Some fantastic shots of London in MP, very evocative. The bit where Dorothy lands in Oz and gets the welcome from the tiny people goes for a bit too long. I suppose both have a similar moral, the importance of home life and so on.

DVD's accent never bothered me, but then I was a middle class kid thank you very much; when was I ever going to encounter a real cockney?

Joysmum · 04/01/2014 15:28

I like them both, never felt the need to compare them.

CustardoPaidforIDSsYFronts · 04/01/2014 15:30

i dont think this needs to be a thread...it's so obvious :) not even in the same universe

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 04/01/2014 15:35

My favorite is Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory original of course, as much as i love Johnny Depp, Gene Wilder is much better at this film.

CiderBomb · 04/01/2014 15:36

Is it true that Bruce Forsyth is in Bedknobs and Broomsticks? I've looked for him in it before but have never seen him.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 04/01/2014 15:38

CiderBomb · 04/01/2014 15:41

I obviously wasn't taking much notice was it?...Xmas Blush

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 04/01/2014 15:43

It might be because you are looking for the older Bruce rather than the younger Bruce

fifi669 · 04/01/2014 15:46

Bedknobs, Mary Poppins and Chitty are all way Breyer than the wizard of oz!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/01/2014 15:49

YANBU. The Wizard of Oz has an awesome start and for that it wins.

AGoodPirate · 04/01/2014 15:57

I only really like Singing in the Rain myself.

MrsBeeZed · 04/01/2014 16:02

YANBU. Love Wizard of Oz and also The Wiz -mainly because MJ was so awesome as Scarecrow-

DulcetMoans · 04/01/2014 16:05

YABU. Mary Poppins all the way

clarinetV2 · 04/01/2014 17:13

Yep, Wizard of Oz definitely trumps Mary Poppins. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang trumps both. However, my Christmas has been ruined by the absence of The Amazing Mr Blunden. All those channels and I couldn't find it anywhere. I'm consoling myself by reading the book (The Ghosts) instead. Sad

Justforlaughs · 04/01/2014 17:17

Hate the film, the Wizard of Oz (I suspect that you needed to watch them as a child to really enjoy them). Loved all the books though.
I used to like Mary Poppins, but have now watched it far too often, with a totally obsessed child!
I prefer Bedknobs and Broomsticks as well.
