To be nonplussed why people rave over Mrs Brown's Boys

I've tried watching it twice twice and haven't got past the first five minutes it was so awful.

It seemed like an artless parody of a shite 70s sitcom (like something Frankie Howerd forgot to make) Don't get me wrong I'm not a comedy snob and quite enjoy a broad knockabout comedy like Vicious, yet I am utterly bemused by Mrs Brown's Boys, it looks dated, absurd and utterly free from laughs.

Yet it has a massive following, especially amongst people of my parents' generation. Normally when there's a TV programme I dislike I can see why other people (Top Gear for example) may enjoy it. But Mrs Brown seems to be without any redeaming features.

There must be some fans out there who can explain its appeal?

Bunny yes I KNOW the Ricky G. thing was a parody! I said it was a send-up. What I meant was that the Mrs Brown thing reminded me of that.

I don't find Mrs Brown's Boys funny at all- never watched a full episode!

Someone may have said this before but I watched QI over Christmas and the guy who plays Mrs Brown was on in as a panelist. He was hilarious. Quick, funny, clever. I loved him as himself.

KPidgeon · 01/01/2014 17:06

oops sorry. Don't know why I have an advert imbedded in my post!

NoComet · 01/01/2014 17:07

Never got past the trailer

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/01/2014 17:07

I just don't get it, DH however loves it.

The DC's school Christmas show was based around it this year. I was Xmas Hmm

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 17:07

Really Sirchen?!? Lol

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 17:07

No, it really wasn't a compliment.

Elf - again, Eastenders does well on iplayer too - doesn't mean a thing.

Moln · 01/01/2014 17:12

I don't like it, I did like Brendan O'Carroll's books though when I read them years ago, but Mrs Brown's Boys is just toodrawnout and predictable slap stick for my liking. I'd probably smile once at a gag in a show (if it was a good one)

I don't know anyone who likes it, mind you I don't discuss it enough it know if everyone I know in in this mindframe, but extended family don't and people in my office don't. I live in Ireland and people who have mentioned it can't understand why it's so popular in Britain.

Humour is subjective, I mean I watched the 'Fenton' YouTube clip and didn't even as much as mildly grin. Others couldn't breath due to laughing about it

waterlego6064 · 01/01/2014 17:12

All the soaps seem to be very popular judging by the front covers of this mags they have near the till in supermarkets, and the conversations I hear people having about them. Soaps are shite too, IMO. They're like the TV equivalent of junk food. I wonder if some people just always have the telly on, whether or not there is actually something good to watch, and that's how they end up getting drawn into these programmes.

waterlego6064 · 01/01/2014 17:14

I loved the 'Fenton' clip. Mainly, I think, because the guy sounds so much like David Mitchell and so I just had visions of Mark Corrigan all stressed in his suit running through Richmond Park.

willyoulistentome · 01/01/2014 17:17

I agree. It's shite.
Someone else said citizen khan was crap too.. They're right. How the he'll do these things get commissioned?

SirChenjin · 01/01/2014 17:18

Well - given your loose grasp of what's funny I thought it only fair to point it out to you Jimmy Grin

AmberLeaf · 01/01/2014 17:19

Don't you think that when you can see the gag coming from a mile off that it totally kills the 'comedy'?

This /\

Obvious 'funnies' really aren't funny.

It is dumbed down funny.

HairyGrotter · 01/01/2014 17:20

I believe it appeals to the many millions of simple minded folk, good for them, bad for those others who like a little more intelligent comedy.

Well done BBC, you've found your niche, the simples

ColinButterfly · 01/01/2014 17:24

So glad to see this thread. I thought I was alone in not getting it.

CiderBomb · 01/01/2014 17:24

I think you either love it or hate it. My dad will sit there and cry tears of laughter at it, but my mum thinks it's unfunny crap.

I'd take it over Miranda any day of the week. Someone really needs to tell that woman she's just not funny.

firesidechat · 01/01/2014 17:34

I'm 50 (not Irish though) and can't stand it. There is nothing you could pay me that would make me watch it.

Feel the same way about Count Arthur. It was on radio 4 long before it made it's way to tv. I listen to radio 4 all day, but The Count was the one programme that made me turn off.

Has anyone come across David Sedaris? Now he is very, very funny and I would love to see him live.

Impomea · 01/01/2014 17:35

Can't stand it .DM loves it .

But we cried laughing at The Wright Way Blush

PresidentServalan · 01/01/2014 17:37

Compo So you like Some Mothers Do Ave Em? Lovely - a show that takes the piss out of someone because he is clumsy and not very bright.

Etainagain · 01/01/2014 17:37

I absolutely love it! It reminds me of my Irish family. My mum was just like Agnes Brown! My kids think it's great too.

biryani · 01/01/2014 17:39

It's funny BECAUSE it's so awful. I like it.

mistermakersgloopyglue · 01/01/2014 17:40

My (Irish) parents think its hilarious Hmm I think it's ok at best and that is after watching a few episodes, it has kind of grown on me a little bit.

My parents also constantly marvel at the fact that lots of them are related... So what?!

PresidentServalan · 01/01/2014 17:41

I believe it appeals to the many millions of simple minded folk, good for them, bad for those others who like a little more intelligent comedy.

Patronising much? Fwiw I know plenty of intelligent people who like it - some of whom who are cultured and who happen to be Irish. Each to their own - I think shite like TOWIE, XFactor, IAC and soaps show that TV is dumbing down, but I just choose not to watch them rather than insulting those who do.

Etainagain · 01/01/2014 17:45

Agree with biryani, it is the fact that it is total mindless crap that makes it so absolutely enjoyable. But I'm obviously one of those simple minded people that HairyGrotter is talking about.
