To be nonplussed why people rave over Mrs Brown's Boys

I've tried watching it twice twice and haven't got past the first five minutes it was so awful.

It seemed like an artless parody of a shite 70s sitcom (like something Frankie Howerd forgot to make) Don't get me wrong I'm not a comedy snob and quite enjoy a broad knockabout comedy like Vicious, yet I am utterly bemused by Mrs Brown's Boys, it looks dated, absurd and utterly free from laughs.

Yet it has a massive following, especially amongst people of my parents' generation. Normally when there's a TV programme I dislike I can see why other people (Top Gear for example) may enjoy it. But Mrs Brown seems to be without any redeaming features.

There must be some fans out there who can explain its appeal?

See, you can't beat Monty Python when it comes to dressing up as women.

Terry Jones is the King/Queen of it Grin

lilyaldrin · 01/01/2014 16:41

My mum and Nan love it.

Caboodle · 01/01/2014 16:42

It's hilarious; are you all mad?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 16:43

Caboodle

Well, yes, I'm quite mad, but that's a different thread altogether, obviously Grin

Weelady77 · 01/01/2014 16:44

Wow is this conversation still going on over mrs browns boys haha Grin

SirChenjin · 01/01/2014 16:46

No - perfectly sane, which is why I don't find it funny Grin Also I don't find it funny because it isn't funny.

Elfhame · 01/01/2014 16:47

It's funny if you find it funny.

lovelychops · 01/01/2014 16:48

My MIL in her 70's of Irish decent, loves it.
I can be in the room when it's on, unlike Vicious or Citizen Khan - both of which I can not believe got a second series re-commissioned.

SirChenjin · 01/01/2014 16:50

Yep - if you find offensive, old fashioned, set up, contrived comedy funny then it must be bloody hilarious.

KrabbyPatty · 01/01/2014 16:51

I tried it once and lasted 5 minutes.

It was embarrassingly unfunny.

I have noticed that in our group of friends, those that tend to piss themselves laughing over everything and anything, love Mrs Brown's Boys.

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 16:52

Sirchen - are you always such a miserable old sod

LtEveDallas · 01/01/2014 16:53

Can't stand it. DH loves it, as do my 60-something PILs and my 80-something (normally prudish) Parents.

I just don't get it, at all. I sit there with a confused look on my face when everyone around me is in fits.

I think it's the 'daft' humour thing. I've never been a fab of slapstick etc.

Elfhame · 01/01/2014 16:53

If you find it offensive etc then switch over. There is no yabu or yanbu about it, just different tastes.

It can't be total rubbish if it topped the Christmas viewing figures.

ComposHat · 01/01/2014 16:54

But why elf? Slapstick isn't my favourite form of humour but appreciate it when it is done well (Harold Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Some mothers do have em, Del Boy falling throigh a bar etc.)

But the example you put up with the glue/ air freshner (is spray glue even a real thing) confusion was just bad comedy. What might jave been a passable but obvious 30 second sight gag was rendered humourless as the set up was too overlong and clumsily executed.

CynicalandSmug · 01/01/2014 16:54

I find it hilarious, but I hate soaps, X factor etc etc. It's one of the few shows I can enjoy, I feel that a lot of British TV is total rubbish, I tend to watch American dramas and comedy.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 16:54

Jimmy

Are you always so rude to other posters?

Have you just read the comments about insults from both sides?

You're the worst culprit on this thread - and you supposedly love the show. You're not really showing yourself in a good light!

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 16:56

Christmas ratings don't mean anything, as I pointed out earlier.

Eastenders does well every year - doesn't stop it from being depressing bollocks that I also avoid like the plague.

Mrs Browns Boys is the latest bandwagon that people are jumping on, hence the ratings.

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 16:57

Sorry my mistake. It's you Heartbroken that's the miserable old sod Grin

Journey · 01/01/2014 16:58

I love it! I think it's very funny.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 01/01/2014 16:58

Gosh, I can see why you like Mrs Brown's Boys, Jimmy.

You're about as funny as the programme!

pandarific · 01/01/2014 16:59

Heartbrokenmum73 So yeah... old people and people with some Irish ancestry.

It's so shit it makes me sad. Can't we export something good asides from Kerrygold?

SirChenjin · 01/01/2014 17:01

Just because something is populist doesn't mean it's any good. The majority of the UK public want hanging brought back, for example...

Rather just switching round from the guff that is MBB I just don't watch it - the couple of times I sat through it waiting for something that resembled comedy was a couple of times too many.

Elfhame · 01/01/2014 17:01

I can't see how it's the latest bandwagon - it's been running for a few seasons now and has it's regular viewers.

It's not just the Christmas ratings, it's on the most popular section on the iplayer a lot .

JimmyChooChoo · 01/01/2014 17:01

Thank you heartbroken for the compliment. Smile

SirChenjin · 01/01/2014 17:02

It wasn't meant to be a compliment Jimmy Wink
