to buy baby things before I've even conceived

Dp has finally earned the 'd' in dp and agreed to start ttc in June. Even though I have problems with my womanly bits, and it may be difficult to concieve, I have the urge to buy baby bits and pieces in preparation, especially while they're so cheap in the sales. Might I jinx things?

Hmmmm, I worked for a nursery shop in the 90's and when it closed down, I bought a pram/pushchair combination for £40 and a maclaren buggy for £10. I knew I wanted kids with or without a man (didn't meet my dh until mid 2000s). They sat in my loft for 12 years until dd arrived and saved us a fortune. We still use the maclaren.
That said, I was very lucky to get pregnant both times on the second time of trying.

When I was pregnant with first child I spent £300 (The value of the toys was more than £1000) in a toy shop that was closing down on toys for baby all the way up to approx 8 years. We still have loads of it put away and feel chuffed every Christmas when I think about how I've only spent about an extra £30 for both kids on stuff they specifically ask for, the rest comes from stuff in the loft. My logic was that I was earning good money then and could afford it. Now I earn a pittance and wouldn't be able to afford much at all. The kids hot a pram each as their main present this year which had been in our loft for 5 years.

Unless it's an absolute bargain though, I'd hold fire until you are pregnant.

Alisvolatpropiis · 31/12/2013 13:15

I wouldn't.

I had to fight the urge fairly recently myself. However, like you I have not yet started ttc. It will have to wait until after our wedding in the summer next year (so nearly this year!).

My mum stared me down until I put said item back.

YABU

TravellingToad · 31/12/2013 13:44

Don't. you will have next years sales if you are successful TTC

WillSingForCake · 31/12/2013 13:47

Don't do it. My friend bought loads of stuff before she'd conceived, and sadly it just never happened & she ended up giving it all away.

Also, having read your other thread, it sounds like your DP is only just coming round to the idea of trying for a baby, so filling the house with baby stuff may freak him out somewhat!

MummyPig24 · 31/12/2013 13:59

Maybe I'm suspicious but I just wouldn't. I have only just started to buy stuff this week (29 weeks) because I feel it is tempting fate. Of course I'm aware that things could still go wrong.

MummyPig24 · 31/12/2013 14:00

Sorry posted too soon. I mean I don't want to be all negative but I just feel it's not a good idea.

Only1scoop · 31/12/2013 14:12

I'm slightly superstitious and when had dd didn't do big shop til about 32 weeks! Even then didnt want to open to many boxes until she was safely here.
I also recently miscarried at 17 weeks and had I have been a brand new mum .....an extra room full of baby things to return home to sort would made things even tougher. Sorry to post a bit of a downer.
We are all different though and if you feel it's right to make a few purchases in the sales it can't hurt.
Best of luck ttc take care x

HappyMummyOfOne · 31/12/2013 14:15

I wouldnt either, i did buy some bits before the 12 week mark but tiny things but certainly wouldnt before being pregnant. Its fun to shop at the time. After twenty weeks when i knew the sex i had a nice amount saved and had a grea deal of fun shopping then.

Frettchen · 31/12/2013 14:21

Don't buy anything...

I've just started TTC (sort of) and have a couple of issues which will make it a bit harder. I'm desperate to start buying things, but know it's the worst idea.

So instead I've made a baby wishlist on Amazon and whenever I get the urge to buy baby things I just put them in the wishlist so they're 'ready' for when the time is right.

Good luck!

tinselledUp · 31/12/2013 14:23

No - don't it will sit there and be on your mind if it does take a long time - and if your not starting till June any way you'll be nearer next year sales.

Putting the money into an account now so you can buy what you want nearer the time - and you need much less than most new mothers think - would be a plan though.

Plus I don't know about your family and friends but we did once pg were announced get some big items bought for us - cot/pram and got given a few nice things as well.

Pipbin · 31/12/2013 14:50

Sorry honey but yes YARU.

I started TTCing 3 years ago.
Today I am in my second cycle of IVF.
Hopefully nothing like this will happen to you, but I know that had I bought anything when I started TTCing then I would really resent it by now. It would be even worse if it never happens.

LIZS · 31/12/2013 14:53

there will be other sales.

Iamsparklyknickers · 31/12/2013 14:55

I think the savings is a lovely idea.

You could get one of those rip offs pretty wish pot things and stick cash in every time you get the urge

www.google.co.uk/#q=pot+of+dreams&tbm=shop

A savings account is also good, but something physically in your house might curb the urge for you a bit.

I don't think you'll jinx anything, but if it starts taking longer than you hoped or you problems carrying, loads of baby things lying around may sting a bit. You might even not want to use them if you associate them with ttc if it's hard going.

diddl · 31/12/2013 14:58

But even if you concieve straight away, you'll only be what 6months by the next Jan sales?

Save up for then!

lifesgreatquestions · 31/12/2013 15:02

Don't. I hate seeing the two items I have. I bought them two years ago. For the most part I forget I have them, but it's like a kick in the ovaries whenever I come across then.

Sisterelephant · 31/12/2013 15:07

Don't do it.

Stuff will ALWAYS be on sale, and it's so special to buy for a baby that's in your tummy!

Use the money to do something that you won't be able to for a long time such as a dirty weekend away or an exotic overpriced-- holiday.

Good luck ttc.

Sisterelephant · 31/12/2013 15:07

that didn't work

diddl · 31/12/2013 15:15

I think I bought a couple of small things when first pregnant.

Of course it won't jinx anything-what will happen will happen whether you've got nothing or a fully kitted out nursery!

And of course when people try for a second, they don't (generally) throw all the PFB stuff away!

I suppose it depends on what you are thinking of getting & whether it would upset you to see this stuff whilst TTC.

FrankelInFoal · 31/12/2013 15:16

Definitely don't do it. It took us 3 years to conceive and I think I'd have had a nervous breakdown if I'd had to look at baby stuff gathering dust in my home in all that time.

By all means put money in a savings account, but don't buy anything until you are at least 12 weeks. Personally I didn't buy anything until after my 20 week scan.

scottishmummy · 31/12/2013 15:18

Put Money aside.dont buy items until you have a safe established pg
With online ordering, constant sales you can purchase when you need to

rabbitlady · 31/12/2013 15:21

don't do it.
if it doesn't happen, seeing them will break your heart.

Floggingmolly · 31/12/2013 15:26

Why on earth would you do this? It's like buying speciality coffee beans for the coffee maker you haven't actually bought yet.

specialsubject · 31/12/2013 15:31

there's no such thing as a jinx, or luck.

but you are over a year from the baby even if you hit the jackpot first time. Why clutter the house now? Buy what you need when you are 7 months pregnant, and remember that only the mattress and possibly the car seat have to be new.

don't let this become an obsession, particularly as you say you have problems.

good luck.

roweeena · 31/12/2013 15:34

Please don't - if you do have difficulty you can't imagine how all consuming the feeling can become. It took me nearly 10 months with my first and it was very difficult.
