To be furious at what FIL tried to show dd3 today?

We visited my PIL today, they live about an hour away. I've posted before about FIL being pretty disinterested in his grand-daughters but thought we'd make an effort today.

We arrived, took coats off etc, FIL was trying to get dd3 to warm to him. Dd was a bit clingy at first (to me) but after a while I realised they weren't in the room. Lunch was just about to be served then so I went upstairs to find dd. FIL was going on about showing 'something' to dd3 and was unzipping something that looked like a long canvas case. I then realised it was a gun Shock as I suddenly remembered dh saying he keeps a gun, no idea why.

But to show it to a 6 year old....??! I hurriedly ushered dd downstairs. I have no idea what to do or who to talk to, or if I'm over-reacting. I don't know much about guns but it looked like it was about a metre long.

Wow I think some of the responses on here are a bit extreme.

OP I really do think it comes down to one thing. If you don't like it then say something. Your are entirely within your rights to do so.

As I said in earlier post I don't think it's a big deal because I was brought up being shown these things. I can fully understand that someone who has not may find it alarming. Would you let him show her a 15 rated movie? Or play a game you found inappropriate? No.

If you think what happened is inappropriate it is perfectly acceptable for you to say it isn't to happen again.

How many of us thought penis?

A gun seems pretty ok, compared to some of the alternatives.

Thank you for your responses. I never knew so many people had guns! I must be very naive.

Op it would have freaked me out too, and my dad would take me shooting when I was younger and had allsorts of dodgy stuff around.
I guess though as an adult you are fully aware of the consequences and uses of a gun then it makes it all rather unnerving, yanbu, he should have at least asked your permission first.

Caitlin17 It is in the wildlife and countryside act (1981). You aren't allowed to live trap and release a number of invasive mammal species, including grey squirrels and mink. Live trapping goes on for a number of reasons in the UK, for example capture and release studies for scientific/conservation reasons, and is not actually that tightly controlled, provided you have the landowner's permission. You do need a liscence to trap some species e.g. shrews, but this is very easy to obtain.

Anyway, sorry that is very off topic.

I don't think that would bother me. As long as it wasn't fecking loaded. Talk to dd about gun safety.
