Dd is 14 yesterday and I have her fb on my phone to check.

One of her friends has just posted this

I don't see why putting an xbox controller in a sluts hand makes her more appealing to guys, I don't think they get how stupid they look.

I can't comment because I am only on there to keep an eye on her but I am FURIOUS!

Talk me down?

I haven't seen those photos no!

Moomin thanks - I remember how irritating it used to be when you found say a great new band then suddenly everyone were into them (it felt like you couldn't listen to them any more or you wouldn't be taken seriously) but they inevitably out themselves as not really being fans without such offensive postings. I think it's the kind of casual lack of respect - a bit like girls who aren't that bright/are a bit shallow just don't deserve to be regarded as human?

Maybe I just take things too seriously...

I don't agree with the wording at all I just want to add Grin I don't like the word 'slut' when used non-jokingly, and that's definitely non-jokingly IMO. I just remember that feeling of wanting to out people as the hypocrites they were, and the frustration of them getting away with it as the 'cool kids'. ahh the teenage years. I won't miss them!! Grin

MurderOfGoths · 29/12/2013 16:29

moomin Problem with that is it creates this idea that girls/women can be either geeks or pretty/interested in fashion/sexy, but not both. It feeds into the whole "fake geek girl" bullshit where any girl that expresses an interest in a geeky area (whether it's games/comics/sci fi) instantly has to start justifying herself in a way that boys/men never would.

I was (no longer sadly) a "pretty" girl who loved makeup/fashion/revealing clothes and got damn tired of being told I couldn't be a "real" female geek because I didn't look the part.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 29/12/2013 16:43

murder I feel the same! People were always shocked that I'm a batman, walking dead, xbox geek because apparently I didn't 'look that way'. Sorry didn't realise I had to wear those massive gigs and wear a t-shirt proclaiming to be a geek...

moominleigh94 · 29/12/2013 17:44

Again, in the majority of cases I'm aware of and remember, it was never anything to do with what people looked like on behalf of the girls who got annoyed by this - it was the fact that they were bullies, who made our lives miserable for gaming and enjoying football - and then do the poses and claim to love these things when in reality they know nothing about them. and if you point out that you've liked it for a while (something you don't do more than once because the reaction is so hysterical), you're a jealous hipster wannabe, or they conveniently have no memory of you liking them.

it's not really about how they look - I don't look or dress like a typical geek either Grin - it's the bullying and hypocrisy that gets to people. it's an outward reflection of a much bigger problem of girls bullying other girls for not following social rules and being the good, subdued little girly girls we're all meant to be.

YouTheCat · 29/12/2013 18:07

True that, Moomin.

MurderOfGoths · 29/12/2013 18:43

Given that the post the OP is talking about is written by a boy and calls the girls "sluts" I suspect it's not done to stick up for the bullied geek girls.. call me cynical..

formerbabe · 29/12/2013 18:47

I barely understand the comment tbh, but you are being very unreasonable if it wasn't even your dd who posted it!

Don't comment...she may unfriend or block you, then you will be even more in the dark as to what goes on between her and her friends.

Iwannalaylikethisforever · 29/12/2013 21:09

She's 12. If she's blocks you, disable the account!

mrsjay · 29/12/2013 21:10

And dd's idea of hell is a disco - she'd rather laser quest too.

DD1 went paintballing for her 18th and loved it
