...or are the sales rubbish? (lighthearted)

Fairly lightheaded as it is the first thread I've started in AIBU Grin

Admittedly I've not logged in every shop, but for example the fragrance gift sets in Boots are the ones that teenagers wear when they first buy perfume. The decent make up isn't reduced. The Next sale has stuff in a size 6 or the stuff that nobody bought first time around in 2010. M&S' is full of old lady clothes. Monsoon's has the stuff where the hem is coming down or the fabric has snagged.
AIBU or am I missing a trick?

YANBU. I've been in a few high-street shops lately; I haven't been snapping up any bargains, as there just ain't been any!

Tesco have slightly more "multibuy" savings than usual on mundane stuff like batteries (which amazed me - I thought they would be double price), but that's about it.

Utterly rubbish! Everything in the high street shops seems to be on 'sale' for roughly the price I'd expect it to be at full price, and some DVDs I'd had my eye on have gone up in price since pre-Christmas (normally 35% off RRP, now on 'sale' for 23% off RRP) Hmm

beachedwhalesarecool · 28/12/2013 08:23

The sales don't mean anything any more. Everyone is so used to constant sales throughout the season that the multiples just bring stock in, so they are still getting full margins on 'sale' items (or massive margins on full price goods so they're not losing out when they offer their frequent discounts) It's all a trick.
The only place you can get genuine bargains are independent shops where they have two genuine end of season sales per year to get rid of what's left before the new deliveries arrive. Obviously then, you are lucky to find what you want, in your size.
I work in retail and am getting ready to go to work with a feeling of dread; I really hate working at sale time. Why on earth do people want to spend more money just after the spending orgy of Christmas?!

ChineseFireball · 28/12/2013 08:33

beachedwhales and I bet they are all shove-y and obnoxious too aren't they? Hate sale shopping.

MrsBucketxx · 28/12/2013 08:38

I hate them too, I get panicy in crowds too so I avoid at all times, its all the piles if it and messy rails I hate too. Shopping shoukd feel like a treat not a chore

TapDancingPimp · 28/12/2013 08:40

They're shit, unless there's something you've specifically had your eye on for a long time.

Take me, for example Grin. I've been intending to try Protect and Perfect for a long time but too tight to pay the full price! Boots had some nice No 7 gift sets out for Xmas so I decided to wait until the sale - got one of the P & P gift sets down from £12 to £6 - to me this is a good bargain. There's a lot of 'smaller' sample sizes for me to try before taking the plunge.

beachedwhalesarecool · 28/12/2013 08:42

Luckily I work in an independent shop so most people are really nice, but we do get a certain type of person who gets cross that we don't have exactly what they want, in their size, for half price. And can we order it in for them? No, it's a sale! We're getting rid of stock. Oh, and the post-Christmas returns HmmI dread that.
I think I'm just tired and would rather be at home with my lovely DD!

raisah · 28/12/2013 08:56

The boots that I want from Clarkes are not on sale. Nnnooo

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 28/12/2013 09:04

Picked up a gorgeous Seasalt velvet coat in John Lewis yesterday £60 down from £120. The rest of the sales wee shite.

Indith · 28/12/2013 09:14

Only things I've bought have been some little lego sets and stuff to refill the present drawer add the dcs have 3 parties to go to on the next 2 weeks. sales mean nothing, most of the places I buy clothes etc started sales well before Christmas. I used to target enjoy it, admittedly add a teenager, when January sales started in January and you could go spend your Christmas money with your mates.

InMySpareTime · 28/12/2013 09:18

I went to M&S in the Trafford Centre, they had helpfully closed all the changing rooms, so I had to try stuff on over my clothes in a quiet corner of the shop. The bra assistant was predictably crap, insisting that 28G is not a real size, and that I should try 32F (with measurements of 25 under, 35 over).
The lady at the checkout was good though, we had two sets of stuff to put through, she suggested we put them together to take advantage of the extra 10% off for spends over £75.
Between M&S and H&M I got a decent haul for £95:
Two decent skirts
Two long vests
Long sleeved top
Short sleeved T-shirt
Stretch dress
Yoga trousers
Hoodie

Looking at this thread, I think I got lucky on the sales, but I'm an odd size (short size 6-10) so perhaps I had a better pick of what was left.
Jeans

paulapantsdown · 28/12/2013 09:33

The only women who do really well at the sales are a size 24 with size 3 feet.

beeny · 28/12/2013 09:37

Thats really funny Paula

willyoulistentome · 28/12/2013 09:41

I've never done the whole sit outside Harrods for the whole night before the sale thing.

I've only ever seen tat in sales. I assumed they bought in racks of crap to sell in the 'sale'.

TheGreatHunt · 28/12/2013 09:42

PMSL paula!

Yes they are crap especially the Next sale. Lord help me.

The only things worth buying are Christmas decorations and wrapping paper etc.

MadeOfStarDust · 28/12/2013 09:50

Sales generally take 2 forms... the type where cheap crap is shipped in and sold off as "bargains" to unsuspecting shoppers... and the other where shops try to sell off cheap, the crap that no one wanted at full price....

bakingaddict · 28/12/2013 09:51

I went to Westfield yesterday.....god the Next sale was absolutely rubbish for kids clothes and there was even a huge long queue to get into the Hollister shop which made me laugh. Hope the stuff in there is worth the wait

orangepudding · 28/12/2013 09:51

I went to John Lewis yesterday to look for curtains, blinds and bedding. There was hardly anything in the sale, really disappointing.

Spermysextowel · 28/12/2013 10:24

I bought 2 barstools for £35 at Asda in September. By Nov thought 2 more would be nice but price was then £49. Nearly a whole barstool's increase. So I didn't buy the extra ones. I did think that a massive hike was odd, & it was because now they're on 'sale' at £35
again. Sale my bottom!

JingleMyBells · 28/12/2013 10:29

Admittedly I have only looked in the Next sale online but although their range was quite limited by the time I got there I did strike lucky. I got a pair of the jeans I like in the petite range for £14 instead of £28 so pleased with that. There was nothing else I liked, even in the kids section.

TheFantasticFixit · 28/12/2013 10:41

I don't 'get' the whole 2am queuing for the Next sale AT ALL
