To think a Kindle would cost less than £69 in a sale?

Hi. (slight stretch of AIBU here) Smile

It is DS's birthday very soon and he would love a kindle. Just the very basic one.

I thought I would be able to get a bargain what with the January sales and all that.

Cheapest one I've seen so far, (from my sofa on the internet) is £69 from Tesco.

Perhaps I was being a little naive but anyone know of anywhere cheaper? Very many TIA.

Why don't you get a kobo instead?

ilovepowerhoop · 27/12/2013 22:03

if you register as a new customer on tesco direct then there are voucher codes floating about for £10 off a £50 spend

coppertop · 27/12/2013 22:05

WHSmith are selling the Kobo for less than £30,

£69 is the standard price on amazon.

FrysChocolateCream · 27/12/2013 22:07

Thanks but we have been put off a Kobo by a friend.

I bought the £69 kindle for £49 from waterstones before Xmas when they sent me an offer email. A couple of days later it struck it was such a good deal I would get one for DS to have at university but it had gone back up to £69 Hmm

Anyway just thought I would tell you to prove it does get discounted from time to time.

Spider7 · 27/12/2013 22:15

Kobo would be better. Cheaper, just as good & you're not tied to buying from Amazon. Smiths are always giving out money off coupons so you could get one for £25! You can also borrow books from the library with a kobo.

FrysChocolateCream · 27/12/2013 22:59

Perhaps I will research the Kobo a little more.

But has anyone any more info re the Kindle?

Perhaps I just don't realise how much these newfangled modern gadgets cost. Smile

There are lots of different kindles. I've got the very basic one which I like a lot. £69 sounds about the right price for it. Kindle fire are a lot more expensive but are really tablets and I'm not sure why if one wanted a tablet one wouldn't just go for a proper Android tablet.

blueemerald · 27/12/2013 23:27

Computer exchange have them from £40 for a basic 2009 model.

Monka · 27/12/2013 23:32

You can download a free application called ecalibre onto your computer to manage your ebook library and add purchases of ebooks (so you are not tied into buying all your ebooks from amazon) onto your kindle.

I bought (quite a few years ago) the kindle 3G with keyboard and love it. The paper white looks great but can't justify buying another kindle when my existing one works just fine. There are refurbished kindles offered on amazon from time to time.

JingleJohnsJulie · 28/12/2013 16:08

What did your friend say about the kobo?

TheArticFunky · 28/12/2013 16:11

I think for £29.99 you can't go wrong with the Kobo if you are just after a book reader.

The Kindle is supposed to be a lot better but you are paying a lot more for it.

RedHelenB · 28/12/2013 16:16

Can you read your Kindle books on a kobo?

LCHammer · 28/12/2013 16:18

How do you buy books for a Kobo?

TheArticFunky · 28/12/2013 16:22

I think Kobo have their own book store. When I looked into it ages ago I think it was slightly smaller than the Kindle store but not much so. It was ages ago though.

LCHammer · 28/12/2013 16:24

I like the ease of Amazon. I haven't got a Kindle yet but I'd be tempted if they're so cheap nowadays.

FionasFatFairy · 28/12/2013 16:28

You can convert books between formats using converter programmes online.

I have a Sony e-reader. I bought my original Sony one before the Kindles were released, it died last summer and I replaced it with the then current Sony model.

My sister has a Kindle and we might have been known to borrow each other's ebooks, just converting them to the relevant format.

We have just bought a Kobo for DS who is 9, one of the things that attracted me was the price, it means I am less worried about him losing it. I paid £30 for a Kobo mini, it is really cute.

JingleJohnsJulie · 28/12/2013 16:45

Fiona I think you make a good point about DS breaking it. I know if I bought an ereader for my DS he would misplace it or break it within a week.

ChatNicknameUnavailable · 28/12/2013 16:46

I have the basic kindle for £69. It's fab. I wouldn't bother with the all-singing, all-dancing kindle fires. If you want a tablet, buy a tablet. I'd find nothing more annoying than a touch screen on a book I'm trying to read!

LCHammer · 28/12/2013 16:50

The Kobo looks great value! As does the Kindle at this price.

Bloodyteenagers · 28/12/2013 16:59

I have a Sony one. Had it for years, as pp, long before Kindle. My dd has a Kindle. We often share books, because over the past 7 or so years I have bought hundreds of books. Converting is extremely easy, just download Calibre. It means that regardless of where you buy your books from, you can still read them. Which is great because you are not tied to one seller and the prices of books do vary.

There's also a number of legit free sites like Gutenberg project. These are books that for whatever reason are now free to download. Always check here first before buying a book, because Amazon, waterstones etc have been selling free books.

Anyway, also have a look at the Nook and the Kobo. Keep checking on hukd for any discounts. Think at the moment John Lewis have them slightly cheaper.

LCHammer · 28/12/2013 17:02

My goodness. I must have been sleeping these past few years :) This is all good to know as I'm spending far too much on books.

beanandspud · 28/12/2013 17:04

Sign up for the Daily Mail online for a year and I think you get a free kindle! Xmas Wink

Spider7 · 28/12/2013 17:11

You can buy the £70 Kobo for £30, £25 if you have a smiths voucher (just buy a paper from them & you'll get one!)

I have a sony reader. I can buy from sony reader, smiths & waterstones. And can borrow from the library. But they do cost more.

I think for a child, £30 on a reader is plenty to spend.

To sign up for the free kindle you need to pay.£115
