Mainly because they don't have loads of big chewy ones and they have the coffee ones back!

I sent dh our for a tin of chocolates before Christmas. Being pregnant it was my only treat. I almost rammed them up his ass when he returned with quality street. I'm sure they are for pensioners! Caused quite a debate in our house for a few days!! Love hotel chocolat but on a tight budget any chocolate will do. Give me Cadbury over nestle any day!!

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 13:24

Roses are definitely no the same since Cadbury's was sold off to the highest bidder.

Like eating sugar with sugar on top. Used to be more chocolatey and more variety in the box. NOT happy. Going to defect to Quality Street next year.

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 13:25

Coffee chocolates should be banned in all forms.

HellonHeels · 27/12/2013 13:47

Had a tin of roses this year, for first time in years. Shocked by the quality of the chocolate, they were vile and had an oily texture.

Was given a box of M&S truffles (fake Lindor-style chocs) and they were horrible too, awful aftertaste.

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 13:49

Lily O'Briens are my faves. Perfect combination of fancy, creamy and sweet. And each one is a like a dessert in itself.

But Roses - did they really think we wouldn't notice? Have we suddenly all turned into toddlers that eat any old thing as long as it's got sugar and fat in it?

3asAbird · 27/12/2013 13:53

kraft have ruined roses no longer same selection as a kid, syd milk tuck even the caramel kegs and nut whirls not same.

quality street-only really like toffee ones rest yuck.

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 14:21

Feeling quite sad now about Cadbury's - are there any good british chocolate firms (that aren't artisanly expensive)?

FunLovinBunster · 27/12/2013 14:28

Meltis NewBerry Fruits.
Nom nom nom.

stephenisjustcoming · 27/12/2013 16:06

My mum offered me the tub tin of Quality Street with a really apologetic expression this year, then said, 'I'll be glad when these are finished' as she choked down three strawberry cremes.

They all taste of strawberry cremes.

Edenviolet · 27/12/2013 16:19

Tesco finest dessert collection chocolates are lovely. They are in a big round box with three layers in. Really delicious salted caramel, champagne truffle, strawberry and lemon mousse and a pecan one that was really nice.

IneedAsockamnesty · 27/12/2013 16:28

I opened a tin and thought what a bunch of cunting arise wipe bastard gits

How fucking dare they mess about with it,as it now tastes like camel wank sprinkled in sugar

Snowdown · 27/12/2013 16:32

Mumzy "mass chocolate producers: cadburys, nestle, frys make chocolate that have a synthetic nasty taste and an unpleasant waxy mouth feel nowadays due to the addition of soya protein to make the chocolate cheaper to produce."
Bit confused - I thought they added veg fat because it's cheaper than cocoa butter hence the EU wanting to call Cadbury's something like Vegilate . When did they start adding soya protein - how is it listed on the ingredients? Afaik the only soy they add is soy lecithin, added as an emulsifier but that's a standard ingredient for most artisanal chocolate producers too not just the mass producers.

DrSeuss · 27/12/2013 16:39

Roses are better. Quality Street are Nestle. Enough said.

purplepuppet · 27/12/2013 16:44

I've lived out of UK for many years now, does Milk Tray still exist? My absolute fave chocolate was the lime which I think was barrel shaped.

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 16:49

Oh purple it's all gone horribly wrong. Don't expect to come back to the UK and expect confectionery to be what it used to be. Cadbury's is owned by Kraft and they make processed cheese. How was it ever going to work?

PrimalLass · 27/12/2013 17:02

They are all horrible. I thought only old people still bought them at Christmas out of some strange tradition.

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 17:16

Old people have a right to eat decent chocolates too, you know.

LongTimeLurking · 27/12/2013 17:38

Both Roses and QS taste like shit now. And the 'tins' are now shitty plastic tubs that contain about 1/2 to 3/4 of the quantity they used to.

I thought Thorntons were (at one time?) a 'high end' luxury choice but even they taste like mass produced shite these days.

horsetowater · 27/12/2013 17:56

I think Cadburys are a distant memory to me now. They do not resemble their former chocolate selves any more. No foil wrappers, stupid shape changes, nasty sweet sticky taste.

purplepuppet · 27/12/2013 18:00

My old quality street tin has my sewing kit in, the roses tin has chess pieces and those shitty plastic tubs which I can get here in france are great for dried dog food. I remember when I was a kid opening a tin and not finding chocolates and being hugely disappointed.

thornrose · 27/12/2013 18:22

FunLovin a fellow Newbury fruits fan, I love them too. They were my nana's favourites and always remind me of her.
