To be bit pissed off with Cox & Cox?

Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 14:45

Just putting DCs Xmas stuff away.

Got them both a couple of the striped popcorn box things from Cox & Cox.

Went to take off sticker from bottom and was bit taken a back to see a dotcomgiftshop sticker on the bottom.

They are only 1.50 cheaper at dotcomgiftshop. I know businesses have to make money but am a bit shocked at Cox & Cox buying stuff from there to sell on their shiney expensive site!

FrameyMcFrame · 26/12/2013 15:33

Don't know what Cox & Cox is... or dotcomgiftshop...

ohforfoxsake · 26/12/2013 15:36

Noooo! I buy from both but always check dotcomgiftshop to see if cheaper. Bit pissed off that the bunny night lights are in Quality Save for a quid too!

Cheeky buggers!

Waggamamma · 26/12/2013 15:39

have you checked they aren't actually both the same company selling through a few different websites? A lot of companies are doing this now.

WorraLiberty · 26/12/2013 15:39

Never heard of them

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 26/12/2013 15:41

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Can anyone translate?

Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 15:44

Don't buy the bunny nightlight. Replacing the batteries costs a bloody fortune !

How do I check if they are the same company?

tiredandsadmum · 26/12/2013 16:05

There is a small independent shop near me lauded for its unusual and quirky gifts, so I popped in to have a look. Seriously someone has just hit buy it all on Cox and Cox. But no branding as such - I just recognised a lot of it and some of the items do have it in tiny tiny print on the base. I just mind the excessive P&P charge :(

Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 16:46

Fantastic business model!

Would it be off to post something on Facebook?

Can't pin down why I so hacked off.

DH reckons it's like buying something from waitrose and finding an asda sticker on it!

OP posts:
Raerae12 · 26/12/2013 16:53

Dotcomgiftshop is the retail arm of Rex international, who are a massive made in china wholesaler. It's probably that they buy from them and it has their dotcom.... Branding on for the retail arm. I happen to know that coz and coz have quite a high mark up compared to other retailers

Raerae12 · 26/12/2013 16:53
  • cox and cox obviously!
HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 26/12/2013 16:53

I agree with your DH. It's about brand. We all rationally know that there may be little difference but choose to buy a more expensive product because of where it is from.

LynetteScavo · 26/12/2013 16:56

Oooh, that would piss me off no end actually.

I would know deep down I was being unreasonable. But would probably never buy from Cox and Cox again.

Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 16:57

It's a sticker on the bottom that I suppose if it were me I would remove and replace with a cox and cox one.

Am disappointed yes in buying something which I presumed because of where I bought it would be better quality.

In future if I find something I like on there will scour net for it at a more reasonable price. Bloody cheaper p and p too.

OP posts:
LynetteScavo · 26/12/2013 17:01

Purely for financial reasons I have had to scour teh net for more reasonable priced things in the past few years.

It hasn't been as enjoyable as buying from beautiful websites, or from gorgeous smelling shops with nice bags, but I've ended up with the same stuff.

I've slowly come to realise high end stores and low end stores sell much the same tat if your are prepared to sift through the tasteless stuff in the low end stores, and the overpriced crap in the high end stores.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 26/12/2013 17:01

Now I get it.

Their website does say they are owned by Cox and Cox, not someone else.

So, yes, I'd be a bit annoyed.

Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 17:02

I want to post 'You sneaky robbing bastards!' On Facebook.

OP posts:
Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 17:03

Going to do as you do Lynette. Cox and Cox will never get another penny from me.

OP posts:
SauceForTheGander · 26/12/2013 17:07

I get why you're annoyed. Cox and Cox have positioned themselves in the market as everything being lovingly sourced and chosen and being impeccably high standard and in good taste. If they are selling another brands stuff with a mark up it undermines their branding.

Sadly the founder of C&C recently died, and I did wonder if things might change.

NoComet · 26/12/2013 17:20

Most blatant one I've ever noticed was a £20 scarf on
'Not on the high street'

Happens I own exactly the same one bought from the stall in our local shopping centre for £7.99

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 26/12/2013 17:28

But they sell twigs and pebbly shit!

SauceForTheGander · 26/12/2013 17:54

Tee yes they do. Sparkly twigs !

Grin

time for pedlars thread

Madamecastafiore · 26/12/2013 17:56

I'll buy my sparkly bloody twigs elsewhere in future too!!

OP posts:
GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 26/12/2013 18:03

So time for a NOTHS, Pedlars thread!

NotYouNaanBread · 26/12/2013 18:22

Half the gorgeous French/rustic stuff you see around the place comes from a Belgian wholesaler called Chehoma (or Coach House, lately) and is made in China. If you are a retailer you buy from these places & you can choose what markup to have - whether it's 2.5 (normal) or 3.3 (luxury dept store). If you sell on Not On The High Street you have to take their 25% commission into account (35% if you are featured in their Christmas catalogue).

As retailers all over the country are going out of business every day, this markup is not enough to stay afloat.

Cox & Cox have a great business I think, but the fact that they have recently gone into wholesale themselves will have pushed up their retail prices, I suspect.

Their founder died of breast cancer last year, I believe, and left four young children.

Whatisaweekend · 26/12/2013 18:24

That would annoy me too.

I have bought things three times from Cox and Cox and three times they have screwed up the delivery. Three bloody times. Not good enough!
