AIBU to ask who does DIY on Boxing Day?

Started and 9.30am

Someone is hammering and drilling (they are a youngish couple without children so it's not like they are assemebling a present)

BANG BANG BANG DRRRRRRRR BANG BANG BANG DRRRRR

I know it's not a Sunday morning but surely this is inconsiderate?

Would I be unreasonable to knock on their door and ask them to stop?

No you wouldn't!

RedLondonBus · 26/12/2013 09:52

Oops! Just seen it's 9.30!! That's acceptable.

Anniegetyourgun · 26/12/2013 09:52

At 9:30 am, yes YWBU, but you have my sympathy.

revivingsnowshower · 26/12/2013 09:54

Argh yanbu, even dh who is normally up at 6am on his days off has had a lie in today.

RoseRedder · 26/12/2013 09:55

I'm going to knock .........it's loud and annoying. And it's boxing day!

We used to DIY on on boxing day before the DC, if something was a two person job as we rarely got a day off together.

Artandco · 26/12/2013 09:58

I would if needed to. It's rare we get a day off together so it would be perfect timing.

Twinkletron · 26/12/2013 10:00

Ditto with the we both work and rarely get time off together. So yes we would!

SMorgauseBordOfChristmasTat · 26/12/2013 10:01

If they are both working it maybe the only chance they get, apart from weekends. I don't think you can stop them and it would be a bit cheeky to ask. They'll probably tell you to get lost and there will be bad feeling.

RedLondonBus · 26/12/2013 10:02

They have every right to tho... It's a bank holiday!! And it's what a BH is for ....DIY

How do I know this?? Cos I work for B&Q and lots if people have been buying in DIY stuff to do over the hol!

FreyaFridays · 26/12/2013 10:02

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, it's after nine. Lazy Boxing Day is becoming a thing of the past really, this is a normal working day for the majority of people.

RoseRedder · 26/12/2013 10:12
Shock

Just knocked

The man answered. He is trying to convert his two bedroom flat into a one bedroom flat as he doesn't want his DP/DW (not sure if they are married) parents staying with them at new year

But it sounds like he's just trying to batter down a wall. I don't think it's a planned conversion?

Should I phone the police? I'm a bit concerned now but it could legimate

OP posts:
FreyaFridays · 26/12/2013 10:14

My god, that may be the most extreme form of festive In-Law avoidance ever!

SMorgauseBordOfChristmasTat · 26/12/2013 10:16

Back away now. I would.

RedLondonBus · 26/12/2013 10:17

The police? Why?

Lweji · 26/12/2013 10:17

Stay away.

At 9:30 it is perfectly legal.
If it doesn't have planning permission and it requires it (it may not) then it's a matter for the council.
He may not have any other times to do the conversion.

Lweji · 26/12/2013 10:18

Also LOL at you actually knocking on his door about banging noises at 9:30 in the morning.

What exactly did you expect to happen?

PandaNot · 26/12/2013 10:19

Wow that's going to extremes but I'm not sure what the police would do! Might cheer them all up though if you phoned them? Grin

RoseRedder · 26/12/2013 10:19

In case it's domestic violence RedLondonBus?

OP posts:
Lweji · 26/12/2013 10:20

Was anyone screaming? Why would you think it was domestic violence?

FreyaFridays · 26/12/2013 10:21

Bit of a jump to domestic violence?

RoseRedder · 26/12/2013 10:23

Just to ask him how long it would going on for Lweji There is often constant DIY noise that goes onto 1am so I'm a bit miffed

OP posts:
BackforGood · 26/12/2013 10:24

Why on earth would you call police ?
Of course it's ok for people to do DIY when it suits them.
9.30am is hardly anti-social hours.
Lot of people don't get much holiday so a bank holiday is a good time to set to.
Can't believe you even went to knock, tbh

RedLondonBus · 26/12/2013 10:25

Domestic abuse? Why? You don't call the police 'just in case'

Netguru · 26/12/2013 10:25

You don't need planning permission for most works which remodel inside. You only need building regs for structural work, new drainage and a few other bits and pieces.

9am is considered fine for noise.

You don't have a leg to stand on. Your neighbour is acting within the law and the fact you don't like it is irrelevant.

Call the police? Hysterical and ridiculous response.
