To be disappointed with friend for buying a dog as a Christmas present?

I'm so disappointed with my friend. She's bought her daughter a puppy for Christmas. Not only am I disappointed but extremely annoyed with her, I think she's being bloody selfish. I think at some point if she mentions the gift to me I am going to have to speak my mind.

The reason I feel as I do is that she has form for buying pets and then getting rid of them a few months later. Last year she got a kitten and within months she discarded it, locked it out of the house until it stopped hanging around trying to get back in. She didn't even have the decency to take the poor thing to a cats home.

She works full time practically so I have no idea how she expects to care for this puppy in the early days. She's always complaining she's skint and I wonder has she taken into account the costs of looking after a dog, not to mention the time commitment considering a dog's lifespan.

Arrghh, I just needed to vent, I really dislike people who have this attitude to animal welfare. This also makes me question my friendship with her if I'm honest.

What a horrible, stupid, crass individual your so-called friend is. I'm surprised your relationship with her survived her cruelty to that poor little cat.
For goodness' sake tip off the RSPCA. You could also start working on her daughter - even if the mother is too thick-skinned to understand what she's doing wrong, you might be able to make the daughter feel embarrassed about it, and that might have some effect.

Can I have her number?

My friend volunteers at a dog rescue. They have had two unwanted puppies in today. Makes me very sad.

Animals are not toys.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/12/2013 18:44

I couldn't be friends with somebody who treated animals that way.

chemenger · 25/12/2013 18:51

This woman is a waste of food. Why on earth are you her friend?

MadAsFish · 25/12/2013 18:56

She's a fucking thoughtless selfish bitch. There is no possible way I would continue to associate with someone like this.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 25/12/2013 19:15

Two unwanted puppies in already, Daddy? Sad

Randy I just hope she doesn't do the same to this puppy a few months down the line, and just kick it out. Nasty cow.

DaddyPigsMistress · 25/12/2013 20:02

Yeah apparently a woman dropped them off saying they were badly recived by the recipent so she tookbit back an dropped them off at the shelter.

Really sad beacase they are about 7 weeks old and utterly gorgeous little husky type brothers. The rescue is full of older ones too now that they are going out of fashion

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/12/2013 20:03

It should be made illegal to buy pets in December or something Angry

DaddyPigsMistress · 25/12/2013 20:04

Took them*

Sticky fudgy fingers Blush

notanotherusername1 · 25/12/2013 20:10

It's so upsetting to read and think of. Sad

Sadly the RSPCA can't do anything. I wish there was an organisation that could step in and she got a life ban from keeping animals, her and many others like her.

I need to erase the thought of that kitten from my mind.

furbaby · 25/12/2013 20:18

Theo That is so very wrong :( oh my god my jaw hit the floor when I read your post ... why oh why do some people think they can just dump animals .
Wonder what was going through that poor dogs mind when they just drove off and left him .
Op it does seem a fact of life that some seem to do and have what they want with out a care to anything or anybody else and the rest of us just look after and rehome because they don't care they have their quick fix .
Its bloody wrong and she does need to see the error of her ways before she makes anymore animals lifes a misery .
I have friends and family (me included) who have rehomed other peoples pets that they have chucked
Out of the house Shocking !

furbaby · 25/12/2013 20:24

Ps if you found out on facebook I would reply with a "I am suprised to see you have a puppy after the way you treated the poor kitten" or something similar so all her fb friends can see what a low life she is .

getdownshep · 25/12/2013 20:31

After watching Paul o Gradys program from Battersea dogs home with tears running down my face I really despair of some people who look on animals as disposable items bought and given away on a whim.
Sorry your friend sounds like a heartless bitch tbh Angry

Twattyzombiebollocks · 25/12/2013 22:24

I couldn't be friends with someone like that, Particularly after the kitten incident. I unfriended someone on FB a month ago as she was trying to rehome her bull mastiff bitch because she had grown too big for her house. This was last years Christmas novelty, they haven't moved house since. Ffs even the most basic breed research would have told her that the breed is bloody huge! guess what she's bought the kids for Christmas this year? Yep you guessed it... Another puppy. Makes my piss boil. If you can't look after it rehome it properly, not on fucking Facebook where any Tom dick or Harry can see it!

foreverondiet · 25/12/2013 22:37

Threads like this make me so angry, and re-affirm my belief that to have a pet you should need a licence, which for certain types of pet (e.g. cats and dogs anyway) would contain bio metric information.

This would have several consequences:

a) fines / prison sentences for abandoning pets (or puppies/kittens of pets) rather than taking them to shelters - and never being allowed to have another pet again after such an abandonment
b) Ban on getting another pet within 5 years of taking a dog / cat etc to a shelter, unless a rehoming charge is paid when taking the pet to the shelter.
c) Fines for leaving dog poo in streets (ie could be caught after the event)

OP you are right to be livid. My PIL had to get rid of their cat (after about 8 years) as their circumstances changed (development of allergies) but they didn't part with her until they found a loving home, thats the right thing to do).

My DC begging me for a puppy but I am aware of the responsibility and they aren't having one.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/12/2013 22:42

It isn't about your friend buying a puppy for Christmas. Lots of people do this after carefully considering it for some time.

It's about her being a fuckwit who treats animals as disposable items.

The thought of that poor kitten trying to get in until it eventually realised it never would is awful. I hope it found another family.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/12/2013 22:43

forever

Totally agree.

NinjaBunny · 25/12/2013 22:43

I found a cat on the side of the road near a field between our down and the next town about a year ago.

He was old, had numerous health issues, was painfully skinny and had an obviously broken but rehealed tail.

I'm convinced that someone couldn't be fucked to drive to the vet and fork out the £50 to have him put down so dumped him there hoping he'd die.

A vet checked him over and confirmed what I thought but also discovered kidney issues.

He stayed with us for 8 weeks but deteriorated quickly, I didn't have the money for his treatment and I had him put down. Buried him in our garden in a blanket he adopted while he was with us.

People are cunts. He was a lovely cat. Really affectionate and had the most awesome meow.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/12/2013 23:04

I do worry that someone thinks I've neglected my cats so has taken them in.

I haven't, they have collars with tags, they're chipped and insured, but both are wanderers.

I love cats but these two. I'll never have cats again.

EvenBetter · 25/12/2013 23:53

Your friend sounds vile. Cruel, shortsighted, unintelligent and a generally terrible person. That poor puppy.

RandyRudolf · 26/12/2013 00:01

Some time after my friend neglected her kitten cat I asked her if she'd seen it around. She said she had and it seemed to be getting big and thought the neighbours must be feeding him. She knows where I stand with animals and could see how pissed off I was about it all. I hope it was ok and she wasn't just saying it to pacify me.

I've been so tempted to write something on her FB page but have decided to calm down first and consider my response. We don't see each other much these days, I think we've definitely grown apart this past year or two but I will keep a close eye on this dog situation even if only via FB.
