To carry on the complaining and to drown Liney.

I've opened it in AIBU to piss off Trills etc and to see if mnhq leave it here

It's because Christmas is meant to be perfect

We all think that we are failing if it isn't perfect. We all think we have to not just pretend to be nice, but actually be nice just because it's Christmas.

It's nuts really.

As long as (on the surface) you can be civil to wankbadgers random ex's, your kids will never notice Xmas Grin

My children seem to have forgotten all the disasters, the rows, the times when various relatives did dreadful things. They either didn't notice or have blocked it out or genuinely didn't notice. The spent this evening reminiscing nostalgically about various presents.

I'm definitely doing something right

Sorry, that was in answer to people wondering why Christmas makes things that are shit seem even shitter Hmm

And Jessie: because Mumsnet is a vital life skill, obvs. Much more important than studying.

Even The One Show was saying recently how the whole of Britain (and Ireland) is missing out by not having the 'Dinner for One' tradition - which is a British sketch btw, but seems to have been forgotten here and gets shown on every bloody TV channel this time of year in Germany about 117 times.
It still makes me wheeze with laughter - it's the anticipation: is he or isn't he going to trip over that tiger's head? Is he or isn't he going to manage to get wine in the cups? Oh, hilair.

I don't get this madness about 'perfection' - it's just setting yourself up for failing, isn't it? We are human, not perfect. We can only try. And try and be kind along the way and have some fun too. I am folding socks, I am having fun

PacificDingbat · 24/12/2013 23:40

Oh, and I love Monty Python's btw - my introduction to British humour. It wasn't even dubbed in German Shock when I was a teenager.

TheBigJessie · 24/12/2013 23:46

Britain should have paid Germany to take Dinner for One. I swear.

I'll grant it's funnier than Frankie Boyle, but actual boils are funnier than Boyle.

PacificDingbat · 25/12/2013 00:09

Peace and love, peace and love - it's Christmas Day!!
Smile

TheBigJessie · 25/12/2013 00:27

I look forward to Christmas every year, just for the mince pies

Heat them up, and pour vanilla custard on them.

Other good things are marzipan-coated stollen, which I buy in Aldi. You'll probably tell me that the marzipan coating is purely a British degradation (like how Chicken Tikka Masala is British) in a minute, but it's still lovely! Xmas Grin Ooh, plain stollen is nice, too.

Getorf (where is she?) once told me she didn't like it. I've Noted This Down. I will never view her as I once did.

PacificDingbat · 25/12/2013 00:31

Mince pies are vile. Stollen is vile too. Marzipan, OTOH, is very nice.

DH is setting up the new XBoxOne - great joy. As if our darling offspring are not plugged in to The Matrix enough every day Xmas Hmm.
On the upside, we have chocolate. Lindor as it happens.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 25/12/2013 02:07

Pacific honey you must be on Christmas crack. Marzipan is VILE.

DSIL and I have almost finished the Abileys. Hic.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 25/12/2013 03:12

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 25/12/2013 03:19

Pacific

no, Monty Python is never dubbed - they had it in contract that all their work can only ever be subtitled!Shock

I like those idiots too. they are back together, making a new film (I think)

so are you German?
I love marzipan too. couldn't buy stollen - they were all sold out!Angry
made choc dipped strawberries instead.
and I'm making poached pear and cloves ice cream tomorrow, both to go with pudding.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 25/12/2013 08:15

Merry Christmas!

Up since 6. Already put together one Thomas playset, one Hot Wheels Garage and one Chuggington playset. Husband has gone for a lie down. Xmas Grin

Small boy's tummy seems to be acting more normally, thank god!

I have apple muffins and coffee. Who wants?

ginslinger · 25/12/2013 08:26

Merry christmas Tee

MaryzBoychildCheeszuzCrizpz · 25/12/2013 09:19

Morning all Xmas Grin and a very Merry Christmas to one and all.

Zing, wtf were you doing up at 3 am? It makes 6 sound almost civilised.

I'll have an apple muffin please, I'm currently eyeing the fudge ds made last night, but even I think it's a bit early for fudge.

How's the head, gin?

I'm in an interesting situation in that ds1 arrived home at 7.45 and went to bed. dh and dd went to church. ds2 is still in bed. I'm wondering what time they will all be awake and able to open presents together

OP posts:
ginslinger · 25/12/2013 09:22

The head is much better than it deserves. In fairness i had only a small amount of booze but mixed it with medication to surprisingly interesting effects Grin

This is exactly the sort of thing i spend my life telling other people not to do

Happy Xmas MayZ

MaryzBoychildCheeszuzCrizpz · 25/12/2013 09:29

Myself, I do enjoy a nice glass of gin-and-nurofen-plus-with-codeine.

Fiderer · 25/12/2013 09:30

Merry Christmas Xmas Grin

I wondered why Zing was posting at 3am too. I've just had Rice Krispies for breakfast and am about to have a mini Magnum for my 2nd course. Toyed with the idea of scrambled eggs and smoked salmon but didn't feel like them.

bigkidsdidit · 25/12/2013 09:33

Morning! Merry Christmas :)

Both my boys slept till 8, they have never done this before and I was twiddling my thumbs and drinkin endless coffee from 6.30. Struck gold with ds1's present (a digger which picks up playdoh and turns it into bricks), he loves it

Having toast now for the first time since low carb bootcamp started in September. It is BLISS. And off to my lovely PIL to get slaughtered. Hurray!

Have a happy day everyone

Avoid "Dinner for One". Fight! Fight!

But when you do succumb, tell me whether you think there are sexu-uuuual implications at the end, too.

MaryzBoychildCheeszuzCrizpz · 25/12/2013 09:48

Hey, Fids, how's Fidboy? When will you hear?

I remember the excitement when mine were little. And I loved playdough as much as they did And I've never even heart of "Dinner for One" Confused

OP posts:
TheBigJessie · 25/12/2013 09:59

Maryz I think you have to be German or have spent time in Germany/with Germans or study German to be inflicted with exposed to Dinner for One.

Fiderer · 25/12/2013 10:00

FidBoy's fine, he and FidGirl were WhatsApp'ing me from bed earlier with lots of Santa emoticons.

They're home in a couple of hours and I'll grab him later when he's had a chance to breathe - I imagine his main feeling will be relief that it's over so I'll let him have some time to himself first.

Fiderer · 25/12/2013 10:09

I'm watching The Red Shoes. God it's creepy. Might need an early drink to recover.

PacificDingbat · 25/12/2013 10:32

Merry Christmas to you all!

Yes, please, to apply muffins if there's any left, knowing you lot!

Well, we have happy boys (DH included) as XBox is doing it's thang Hmm - I just lack the gaming gene altogether.
So, they are busy and I am MNing; result.

Red Shoes v creepy - Dinner for One national institution. Jessie, ofbloodycourse the end has a sexual 'connotation', nay, it's really quite out there - teehee, old people having sex

Yes, Zing, I am German, been in the UK for 20 years and have gone fairly native Xmas Grin. Your insomnia is getting worse!!

Yy to interesting meds + alcohol effects - fond memories of Tylex + wine a few Christmasses back...

Too early for alcohol for me, I think. On second thoughts, prosecco anyone?
