AIBU to hate people using "ick" or "icky" as an adjective.

It is not on. Unless you are three years old.

Stop it.

AND which is it anyway? "Ick" or Icky" - stop interchanging them. At least be consistent.

Yes, yes I realise I have indulged in many a word hating/loving thread but so what?

The phrase I particularly hate at the moment is 'bits and bobs', as in 'I'm just popping out for a few last-minute bits and bobs' or 'They get one big present and a few bits and bobs in their stockings'. I think it is said by the same kind of people who are always 'popping round', 'popping to the shops', 'popping some nibbles in the oven'. They should be quietly terminated, clearly.

I had never heard of Christmas Eve hampers till I joined Mumsnet. To this day, I have no idea whether said hampers are actual wicker baskets full of new pyjamas and 'Christmassy bits and bobs'. Urgh.

Hate when sentances like at the end of the day are used when not really talking about the end of the day, any thing thats come out of essex , and the stupid fucking name onesey its a fucking all in one suit my children wore them long before thay had this stupid name.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 23/12/2013 11:10

I hate choc or chocs, just say chocolate FFS. It's worse written down, to be fair.

Scoffing or munching on chocs/choc makes me want to throw things.

We came my cat's vomiting bogleing (made up word), the Pre retch/vomit sounds sound exactly like that. Booooogle boooogle, cacccch cacccch.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 23/12/2013 11:11

*call not came.

StupidMistakes · 23/12/2013 11:14

The worst words I find together are amount owed followed by a hideous number. (wails then screams)

drivingmisslazy · 23/12/2013 11:18

Personally can not stand boak, or my bad.

My biggest one though is 'hun' and awwwwwwww before something. I have a friend who can manage to get both into a text conversations about anything.

Salmotrutta · 23/12/2013 11:25

I'm enjoying the discussion about cat vomiting noises Grin

I have to "pop out to the shops" soon for a "few bits and bobs".

Heehee.

I shall mostly be shopping in that well known retailer, "BitsnBobsRUs". Grin

I hate "my bad" with a vengeance, it just appeared one day, where did it come from?

I also hate "grab" in sentences like "I'm just going to grab a coffee" or "grab some lunch". Oh and "Could I get a coffee?" NO

mumtosome61 · 23/12/2013 11:40

Words/Phrases I hate;

  • "boom"; to signify a completed challenge
  • "shabby chic" (when something is new); no, you're cashing in on a trend that is worn.
  • "couple or three times"; sorry, I cannot stand this.
  • "dare I say"; just no.
  • "totes"; fuck off.
candycoatedwaterdrops · 23/12/2013 11:55

I hate "can I get a coffee?". No but you can have a coffee. Angry

HaroldTheGoat · 23/12/2013 11:57

I hate when in subway people who are English and in no way American start saying can I get a ham on wholemeal.

livenlet · 23/12/2013 12:35

I am back from High Street hell.

Actually it wasn't really hell but I found myself debating the merits of two different Christmas puddings in the supermarket so I knew it was time to come home...

And no, I dont make my own Christmas pudding.

I haven't got a present for the cats. Will they hate me 4eva? Wink

I'm glad someone else said 'bits' - it's been pissing me right off recently.
'Just get some crafty bits to put in his stocking' or 'We'll bring a few nibbly (that's another one!) bits to have before dinner' - the word 'thing' is fine and much underused now that bits has become so popular.
I also hate 'choc' specifically hot choc which makes me want to poke myself in the eye with my own severed toe.
There's also an odd grammatical one which I only really see on here where people say 'he needs told' instead of 'he needs to be told' - I tell myself it's a colloquialism, but it doesn't really help.

Salmotrutta · 23/12/2013 13:30

Yes, "bits" makes it sound like the sweepings from the kitchen floor.

HavingAnOffDAy · 23/12/2013 13:31

Nom nom is disgusting

Urgh, it makes my skin crawl just typing it.

My DM says 'food that people can just pick at' when she means a buffet. And by people she means us, her family, not just some randomers in the street.

We, DM, we. Not 'people'.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 23/12/2013 14:33

But Having who doesn't like a buffet full of 'picky bits'? Om nom nom. Xmas Grin

ariadneoliver · 23/12/2013 14:48

Scarletlady I agree, I also hate the use of the word 'pop' on decorating programmes eg 'that colour really pops'.

LividofLondon · 23/12/2013 18:13

The use of the word "panties" makes my flesh crawl Confused It sounds so sleezy to me.

Salmotrutta · 23/12/2013 18:15

Panties is worthy of a jail sentence.

Or death.

Salmotrutta · 23/12/2013 18:32

Yes, death is good for people who commit such sins.

Death by pelting with dictionaries.
