To be irritated by people on C4 news taking out payday loans

I am Shock at people taking out loans to buy brand new fridge freezers and playstations from Bright House instead of buying secondhand/doing without if they can't afford it. 8 year olds are old enough to understand they cant have the latest thing if their parents can't afford it. If your kids are influenced by ads just turn them off! Isn't this basic common sense?

Oh and i bet the posters who say 'why dont the idiots wait and save for a fridge and a freezer' are the same posters who say on other threads 'why dont the idiots cook extra and freeze the leftovers for lunches'.

Here we go again. There are loads of thread on here. 'Why don't people on low income cook from scratch' blah blah blah.

Bright House etc offer people who would otherwise not have access to 'nice' new stuff access to 'Nice New Stuff' 'It's nice to have 'Nice New Stuff' for your house especially if your too skint to go on holidays, run a car and go places etc.

We live in a culture where our self esteem can be boosted by having a nice new something or other. Bright House know this and are exploitative bastards.

MrsDeVere, maybe I read it several times already, and it didn't say what you meant it to say.

badtime - I get what MrsD is saying.

But don't ask me to explain it because she's already said it best!

Owllady · 19/12/2013 17:52

I have a very severely disabled child and I have to do 3loads of washing per dat, and drying
Bed stripping in night Tec
A lot of carers live in poverty. I don't, fortunately yet I still struggle.
I can't understand why someone would think they were stupid to get a washing machine or dryer, it's more like stupid not to

I would like to point out that I hate these companies and would never ever use unless I was desperate. It's all good and well to say buy second hand or do without but what if they actually don't have the cash to buy second hand? And how can you expect someone to go without a fridge? I see a fridge as an essential item, especially when you have children. It is not always about people just wanting to buy the latest gadget without a thought. Sometimes it's a final resort.

All pay day loan companies of any description should be banned. They dupe people -

fail to explain the larger implications of what such a loan can do to your credit ratings - mortgage lenders are now revealing that they either won't lend at all or there are time bars to lending to people who have taken out payday loans of any type

They serially lend to the same customer so the loan is "short term" but when people have EIGHT in a row it essentially constitutes a long term loan.

They don't run credit checks that are in any way for the benefit of the customer. "Bespoke underscoring system" - that means it's for their purposes.

They take the customers word for it that they can pay it back on a given date when often this is not the case. It is not enough to take someone's word for it, they want/need that money right now

The meaning and effect of the "paperwork" half these companies, which are based online, provide is never explained. The meaning would not be clear the majority of people.

Some refuse to set up repayment plans with customers who are struggling financially so they are left only being able to pay off the interest while the loan rolls over month after month and they spiral into more debt.

They are legalised loan sharks.

I don't get annoyed at the people who take these loans out, I get angry at the companies.

I also think it's a special kind of privilege that allows people to say "well the poor are poor, they should be grateful for what they can get/be given and how fucking dare they want nice things". Which is what a lot of you are saying.

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 18:00

Alisvolatpropiis Well said.

^^This, a million times over.

Poor people - know your place.

haven't read the whole thread, but I saw the programme and the guy who was saying that the whole culture of retailmas and 'buy sparkly tat' kept getting shouted down by the presenter.

this is a big part of the problem. as is the 'shopping relates to self-esteem' crap.

the guy on a low income who had spent a fortune on a new sofa also annoyed me. There is loads of perfectly ok furniture available secondhand - ebay, charity shops etc etc. Just like the two sofas for £50 that have done us fine for ages now. Clean, comfortable and tidy. Bought from someone who was in a position to buy new.

I see loads of good furniture in our charity shops too.

not so simple for cooker etc, but he could have made much better use of his money.

specialsubject · 19/12/2013 18:09

so annoyed that I missed a crucial few words ' the culture of sparkly tat NEEDS TO CHANGE!'.

cantheyseeme · 19/12/2013 18:10

I used a similar company to get a new washing machine when we were piss poor, it was kind of the only option left. In March im going to pay the remaining balance off because thankgod we are in a much better position.
I am not stupid by any means, i knew the interest rates and that in the long run i would be paying ridiculous money back but when people are desperate.... i think its easy to tell people that these things are bad but i wouldnt have listened, until now and i am paying the very expensive price!
Will never do this again, im not too proud to bloody use a relatives washer if it ever came to it instead of a 2 year high interest shackle!

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 19/12/2013 18:16

buying things to improve your self esteem can only be a sign of lack of self worth. but this is rarely discussed.

im not too proud to bloody use a relatives washer if it ever came to it instead of a 2 year high interest shackle! we are all different aren't we? my motivation would be short term pain for long term gain.

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 18:20

Hopefully your relatives wouldn't mind this Smile

cantheyseeme · 19/12/2013 18:20

Absolutely i agree now haha! I was younger and greener i think!

cantheyseeme · 19/12/2013 18:21

Haha misswinter im quite fortunate Smile

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 19/12/2013 18:21

is washing machine necessary depends completely on individual circumstances. you cannot compare the amount of washing needed in a household with young children or adults with continents issues with a house where everyone only needs a normal number of clothes/bed changes.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/12/2013 18:24

What makes me furious about payday loan advertising is that it is so prominent. On tv all the time, uninvited as "sponsored links" on certain social networking sites.

It's in people's faces all the time. If I was desperate, didn't have close family, didn't know the real implications then I too might be tempted. Even knowing the real implications, if I had no family or my family were in the same position as me, I might be tempted.

There are alternatives. But they're not advertised because they don't have a mult billion pound annual profit to play with.

mistermakersgloopyglue · 19/12/2013 18:24

If you look on the Bright House website under their 'best sellers' section there is not a fridge/freezer or washing machine to be seen. It's x box one, phones, nintendos etc.

Now I do understand that they might just put that stuff in that section as fridges and washing machines are not quite as enticing, but my guess is that Bright House do not make the majority of their money from 'dull essentials' such as white goods.

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 19/12/2013 18:35

"Furniture accounts for about 20 per cent of sales, audio and visual for 30 per cent, domestic appliances for 20 per cent and technology for 30 per cent.[1]"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrightHouse_(retailer)

so 60% of purchases from BH are for audio visual and technology.

not exactly the fridges and washing machines being discussed on this thread.

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 18:36

mistermakersgloopyglue Quite possibly not but it wouldn't surprise me either if this is because it is Christmas. At this time of year many households would deem these items as essentials if DC who still believe in Santa has asked for this as his present...

It must be such a heartbreaking situation to be in.

Owllady · 19/12/2013 18:47

My closest relatives live over100miles away, I wouldn't have the luxury of using their shots goods several times a day indefinitely
