I am currently sobbing along to The Holiday, after celebrating national Elf-along-day last Sunday. I haven't got around to a tree yet (I don't like it up for more than a couple, three weeks so it goes up on Saturday and comes down on 12th night) but start cakes in late October and presents/card planning in November. It's not a lack of planning, I like to cram it into a happy December, and the films help set the mood.

What's your favourite?

Muppet Christmas Carol. It is awesome and never gets any less brilliant.

WaffilyVersatile · 13/12/2013 23:24

My favourite story to watch on tv with the kids at Christmas is Home Alone. On my own it has to be Die Hard..it does have Christmas in it

"And lo, the wet bandits did doth descend onto the house, and on micro machines did they step, and VCR’s did they intend to take. But the good child did knoweth this plan and he did string paint cans onto rope and into the faces of the intruders they did plummet, for thou shalt not mess with kids over Christmas, sayeth the Kevin."

HoFuckingHoFuckingHoneydragon · 13/12/2013 23:26

I'm enjoying the Holiday right now too Grin

We have Miracle on 34 th street on Christmas Eve, It's a wonderful life on Christmas Day, and at some point Holiday Inn and Elf. I always have carols from Kings on, too.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 13/12/2013 23:45

My favourite has to be "I'll be home for Christmas". It is an American film that stars Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from Home Improvement). No one else seems to have ever heard of it, but I love it. Once I have seen that, Elf and Home Alone - then it is Christmas.
Oh and Christmas with the Kranks is a firm favourite in this house.

DontCallMeBaby · 14/12/2013 00:03

Muppet Christmas Carol would get BETTER if they'd release a DVD version with sob The Love Has Gone restored.

DD has Miracle on 34th Street in her Xmas eve bundle ... I have never actually seen it. :S

usualsuspect · 14/12/2013 00:05

I love jIngle All The Way.

flaparoo · 14/12/2013 06:05

I love Elf but my absolute favourite is A Christmas Story which isn't very well known but really funny.

nooka · 14/12/2013 06:18

Our friends gave us A Christmas Story last year and I'm sorry but we thought it must have been a bit of a joke present because we thought it was really really awful.

We've watched Its a Wonderful Life whilst wrapping presents on Christmas Eve a few times now (and for some reason dh likes to watch The Shawshank Redemption too) and I love the Muppet Christmas Carol too.

Chottie · 14/12/2013 06:22

I love Christmas movies. My favourite is the Danny De Vito movie when he and his neighbour try to outdo each other with their Christmas lights.

MissMarplesBloomers · 14/12/2013 06:27

Love Miracle on 34th St too, but for ultimate Christmas cheese its got to be White Christmas!!!

Sixweekstowait · 14/12/2013 06:58

That Judy Garland one - Meet me in St Louis - when she sings Have yourself a merry little Christmas, I always have a wave of nostalgia and a longing for times that can never be again and perhaps never were but should have been

Glittermud · 14/12/2013 06:58

I love any Christmas film from the 80s. But my go-to mood lifter is The Santa Clause with Tim Allen. It feeds my Buzz Lightyear crush .

chirpchirp · 14/12/2013 07:44

I know the one you mean littleptincess, it's a channel 5 favourite. That's the place to find the truly cheesy Christmas films: Single Santa Seeks Mrs Claus starring Steve Guttenberg as Santa (just terrible), Annie Claus and there was one god awful one the other day that had Elizabeth Berkley from saved by the bell and showgirls in it.

From the genuinely brilliant category of Christmas films Elf is my hands down winner. I watch it every year as soon as I've put the tree up with a large Baileys. Tradition.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 14/12/2013 09:12

Ive got too many favourites to write down.
But I do love, Mrs Miracle (1&2)
If anyone hasn't seen Santa Who? Please please watch it...its brilliant and Leslie Neilson plays Santa.
My parents have over 250 Christmas dvds so I think ive caught their obsession Xmas Grin

CogitoErgoSometimes · 14/12/2013 09:14

"It's a Wonderful Life" gets an annual outing in this house. Accompanied by sherry, naturally.

KittensoftPuppydog · 14/12/2013 09:31

Bad Santa.

Mignonette · 14/12/2013 09:34

'Home For Christmas' with Mickey Rooney playing a Hobo who turns out to be the protagonists Father.

'Love Deck The Halls' with Danny De Vito and Matthew Broderick and 'Christmas With The Kranks'.

I want some American-Latino Christmas films. Does anybody know of any?

IslaValargeone · 14/12/2013 09:34

Oh I love Bad Santa, I have such a thing for Billy Bob.

Mignonette · 14/12/2013 09:35

I like 'I'll Be Home For Christmas' LittlePirncess.

We have loads of Christmas DVDs. Love them.

AMuppetChristmasCorral · 14/12/2013 09:37

Mine (if you didn't guess from the username) is A Muppet Christmas Carol, but I love While you Were Sleeping, Holiday Inn and Miracle on 34th Street too and The Santa Clause

AMuppetChristmasCorral · 14/12/2013 09:40

Oh golly, I forgot my absolute favourite! A Muppet Family Christmas! It's so awesome, and it's no longer available. I was bidding for a 2nd hand copy on eBay - it went for over £200 in the end Xmas Sad

EATmum · 14/12/2013 10:25

Polar Express. Absolutely. Love that film and we watch it as a family every year.
Also Love Actually with a glass of wine and presents to wrap.

Binkyridesagain · 14/12/2013 10:32

We have Christmas DVD day, today. Every year we sit down in our PJs watching Christmas DVDs only moving for food, drink and toilet.

At the moment Albert Finney as Scrooge is on the TV but when that is finished, A wonderful life (in colour as its boring in B/W, DS opinion) will be going on and after that we have the Grinch, Scrooged, Santa Clause the movie, polar express, fred claus and maybe A Christmas Carol (Jim carey version).

When the DCS have gone to bed Kill Bill is the late night choice.
