to think using mooncup in a small office with a frequently used loo is a bit gross?

I've certainly been educated about the benefits of mooncup and reuseable sanitary supplies on here over the last few weeks. What I fail to understand is how this is remotely practical in an office with a small public toilet. We have separate mens and womens loos, but the female loos have two stalls and a shared washbasin area. The loos get reasonably high traffic as we often have company wide training in our Boardroom. So seriously moon cup users - how do you manage not being caught washing out said device in the sinks? Sorry if this is a bit gross but would like to hear how others manage before seeing whether this is something I could consider using if I can get over the ick factor.

sykadelic You just can't help some people though, it doesn't matter how many times you repeat basic instructions - they just won't follow them. There is no "suction" feeling if you use it properly. I wonder sometimes how some people manage to put socks on.

Oh and that video was boring - I mean get to the fucking point sweetheart - I turned it off before she even got to any supposed gore.

sykadelic15 · 14/12/2013 05:37

@Blousy - I'm confused. If you're referencing my post, at no point did I say "dry out". It wasn't drying out at all, the cup itself smelt, whilst in use and whilst inserted. It also smelt when she took it out to empty it.

To each his (or her :P) own!

sykadelic15 · 14/12/2013 05:38

@Blousy - I did consider saying "skip forward" 'cause yeah, she does go on a fair bit!

MinesAPintOfTea · 14/12/2013 05:53

It gets throughly washed when i'm at home (and soaked in Milton after each period) but only given a quick wipe if i'm i'm public/work loos. Nothing is dry and the silicon wipes clean easily.

There was a woman on here who complained her mooncup smelt, after a while it was realised that she was leaving it in until out was fullwhich took up to 2 daysEnvy If those videos are about people that fast then I don't want to see them

sebsmummy1 · 14/12/2013 07:16

Syka love, I think you're being a tad dramatic.

People can get into all sorts of trouble wit the most innocuous of things. A cotton bud for example, I personally have found the dual ended plastic baton quite the friend, others think it's a blue plastic bastard that saw them in A&E for 8 hours.

The insertion and removal are something you have to master. I probably wouldn't be recommending it to someone I their teens, as I can remember fighting with the slimmest tampons you can buy. There is absolutely no way id have been able to cope with a moon cup.

For women a little older who understand their bodies and don't get freaked out by their vaginas, it's pretty easy to handle. I have never had to fist myself lol

octopusinasantasack · 14/12/2013 07:19

A bottle of water in your bag and wash it in the cubicle. Not ideal but needs must at times.

octopusinasantasack · 14/12/2013 07:22

didyou sorry but that is gross, toilet cleaning blocks with bleach and, well, yuck.

spanishring · 14/12/2013 07:26

You just learn how to adapt and how to do it in all kinds of situations! At first I used to take water but I thinks sometimes it must have sounded like I was a camel with all that water flying out. Now I tend to just wipe. As others have said above there is no oxidisation which is what makes blood smell. I text to just try and remember to wash my hands before emptying mooncup.

Small crowded loos are a doodle now. White bathrooms with cream rugs on the other hand fill me with dread!

spanishring · 14/12/2013 07:27

I don't text I tend!

TallGiraffe · 14/12/2013 07:29

I am a recent convert and it has changed my life. Years of ridiculously heavy and painful periods reduce to totally manageable. Thanks MN!

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 14/12/2013 07:29

Also love my mooncup and just vaguely wipe it if in a cubicle. Little tip though, I empty it on to a tissue and then flush that, rather than empty it directly into the loo, as blood is quite heavy and in some loos after 1 flush there would still be blood collected at the bottom if the bowl.

FelineExtraStrongMincePie · 14/12/2013 07:34

Just to consider this from a totally different angle. The number of toilets per user is regulated under health and safety law, OP. might be worth checking out whether your premises have enough!

hooochycoo · 14/12/2013 07:43

Yeah, put a bit if loo roll floating on the top of bowl first and empty it into that, prevents red spot at bottom of loo.

Jaynebxl · 14/12/2013 07:49

Just on a tangent, do you use moon cups at night?

DorisShutt · 14/12/2013 08:11

Yup. Been using mine for two cycles now and I don't have to wake at 12, 2 & 4 to change myself.

Just once at 3 - I'm a total convert.

And as an aside, I can now go back to my GP and say that actually, based on the average of 60ml a cycle, then I do have extremely heavy periods and that might be the cause of my anaemia, not my diet Hmm

spanishring · 14/12/2013 08:22

My sister said something interesting- she said she didn't want to mooncup because it was. ' mucky '. Actually I find it to be anything but. Occasionally messy but def not mucky.
The whole female sanitary industry is based around making us feel that periods are mucky whereas using a mooncup has helped me realise they're not. It helps to put you in touch with what's going on with your cycle and that can't be a bad thing.
I've gone all philosophical whoops

Happy I think she just enjoys disagreeing with me but I know what you mean.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/12/2013 08:41

I started using a mooncup over 10 years ago in my early 20's. I've now got a Meluna cup which I prefer. I just use loo roll to clean and re insert.

I'd like to ask the poster above who got blood on her blouse how she managed that? Mine goes straight down the loo.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 14/12/2013 08:43

Yes, the flushing water is the same water that comes out of the tap, but the tap nozzle is (hopefully) not covered with particles of other people's faeces.

AllabouttheE · 14/12/2013 09:11

My moon cup is very stained. Does anyone have any tips to make it clear again? It doesn't really bother me but I've lost the cloth bag and it looks so unsightly in my cabinet!

Iamsparklyknickers · 14/12/2013 09:23

Another convert here!

It's honestly not bad at all in small loo's, I just wipe and get on with my day, it's only my peak days I may change during working hours anyway. Personally I get that 'bubbling' sensation, same as with a tampon but no leaking. Don't know if that's from it being pushed down as it gets fuller?

I'm cheap and didn't get a proper one, you can get one's (brand new!) on ebay for about £8 including p&p. Mines purple Grin

Iamsparklyknickers · 14/12/2013 09:29

Should have said search 'menstrual cup' on ebay - mooncup is not the only brand!

If you try something like softcups like I did (bigger Boots sell them - they're a box of disposable ones for a fiver) be aware that they sit much higher up and aren't the same thing at all - those things are messy as hell, but not a bad way to see if you're comfortable with the concept. They're great while they're in, but it's something else when you take them out!

MellowYellowWag · 14/12/2013 09:31

Allabout soak it in strongish Milton solution. That will remove all the staining.
