Periods just returned after a long time pregnant then breast feeding and I now find my old failsafes stink. I have bought a new pack of "simply fits" which don't seem to be as obnoxious as I was convinced the smell was so vile that someone would comment on it! Where has this idea come from and does anyone think it's a good one?

madmomma · 13/12/2013 22:50

exactly

madmomma · 13/12/2013 22:51

No not periods ria but I can smell semen sometimes. Not pleasant but there it is.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 13/12/2013 22:53

Then even if people with a very strong sense of smell can't detect it, what's the problem?

Sarahplane · 13/12/2013 22:53

I've stopped using always now because they all seem to be scented and I'm allergic to them.

Methe · 13/12/2013 22:55
Grin

Thanks for the offer but I've got things to do this weekend.

You don't smell lovely.. These advertising arsewipes would like you to believe you do but you don't.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 13/12/2013 22:56

*if even, rather

Methe · 13/12/2013 22:56

Ahh, now I have smelt semen.

Occasionally I have thought.. ' you had sex this morning'

And then I thought ' fair play'

And went on with my day.

CelticPromise · 13/12/2013 22:57

I haven't used scented pads and can't imagine trying them. Why would I?

On the smell subject, I think the pads/tampons themselves have a smell. I used to use tampons and could smell them when I removed them- not a surfboard unpleasant smell, but definitely there. NowI use a mooncup and I can't smell it at all when I take it out. So if you think you smell, try cotton pads or a menstrual cup and see if it makes a difference?

Sarahplane · 13/12/2013 22:57

By far the worst idea has to be scented tampons. I bought a packet of tampax pearl without paying enough attention and then realised they were fragranced ones. Surely that's pretty much designed to cause irritation?

madmomma · 13/12/2013 23:01

The problem for me, is that during my period, when I crouch down - which I do a lot because I have babies- I can smell my period and I find it unpleasant. It makes me feel less confident and it's just something I'd prefer not to smell. That's why I choose to use scented sanitary products. That doesn't mean I've been persuaded to be ashamed of my genitals by advertising. My point is that people are different and not everyone who buys scented sanitary towels is ashamed or brainwashed.

madmomma · 13/12/2013 23:04

Yes I also get on with my day when I smell semen or any other unpleasant smell methe. But if my body is producing an (in my opinion) unpleasant smell despite washing, then I am glad to have the choice of a deodorising product. Not a biggie.

CelticPromise · 13/12/2013 23:07

Surfboard? I don't even know what I meant to say Confused

madmomma · 13/12/2013 23:08

Anyway I'm off for a shower before bed. Might look into getting a mooncup thingie and see if it makes me any less stinky. Smell ya later Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/12/2013 23:17

sarahplane I buy tampax pearl all the time - they're unscented, I promise! Shock

traininthedistance · 13/12/2013 23:17

angrydrib I have heavier periods after having DD and I actually find the best long thin pads with wings are Boots thin maternity towels, the kind that are no thicker than a normal pad - but they are much longer which is great. Every month I get a pack of those for the first day and the nights and a pack of Cottons for the later days.

I can sometimes smell myself when having my period, but it isn't the blood as such (the blood smells different). TBH I don't actually find it unpleasant - it isn't fishy or nasty, it's kind of a sweetish intense smell, a bit like fresh bread, sort of hormonal. I weirdly like it and certainly don't want to cover it up with by thing perfumed (thrush city!) and never buy Always any more. Cottons are nice.

FryOneFatChristmasGoose · 13/12/2013 23:18

I must admit there's a particular smell I associate with sex, so it must be the semen I can smell (and it's not just a smell about me, I've smelled this on other people). Didn't think it could be that before Grin

But I've never smelled a woman menstruating, I've only smelled those awful scented pads. A normal woman is perfectly clean.

RubyGoat · 13/12/2013 23:18

I bought a pack of the scented liners once, by accident (failed to read the pack). Made me itchy & gave me thrush. They went straight in the bin!

wispywoo1 · 14/12/2013 01:06

I like them. They're thin and much more absorbent than some cheaper brands. Periods do smell. scented pads help to mask the smell.

YouLoveItDoreen · 14/12/2013 01:16

There was a special offer in my local blue supermarket, they had decked the aisles out with stands full of the scented san pro, honestly I could smell them half way around the shop, it was horrible, I'd rather they made them smell like the Jelly Belly air fresheners, I'd love my undercarriage to smell like toasted marshmallow! Or would you all favour a Yankee candle scent instead?

sykadelic15 · 14/12/2013 03:42

Actually I like the scented ones.

Menstrual blood smells, for everyone, but the degree to which is smells varies. I "invented" this idea when I was 13 and a boy in class turned to me and said "X is on her period" and when I asked how he knew he said "I can smell it". I was mortified and avoided him every time I had my period.

Of course I didn't actually "invent" the scented pads, it was just an idea i had as a kid and when they came out a few years later I was ecstatic. 'Course now I'm older I know more about managing the smell problem, feminine deodorants exist as well now (pretty sure they didn't back then) and I haven't had a period in 4 years thanks to my birth control rod so I haven't hard to worry about it :)

sykadelic15 · 14/12/2013 03:43

I feel I should add the scent of the pads is NOT a strong one in the brands I use to buy in Australia and I've never had a period in the US so I have no idea about brands here... maybe the bad/strong smelling ones are brand specific?

merrymouse · 14/12/2013 07:29

sykadelic15, how do you know he was telling the truth?

Iamsparklyknickers · 14/12/2013 09:52

Of course blood smells Confused ever had the misfortune of encountering a sanitary bin that desperately needs changing?

It's not really strong though when you're changing your pads/tampons regularly though. People who can smell it through clothes and underwear probably just have a really keen sense of smell.

I do find the scented pads make things worse though. If your period reacts with the air to make a smell, chucking in a load of other chemicals to the mix is hardly going to help is it? I thought it was a risky strategy anyway, people have such personal preferences around scents that you're going to alienate a large portion of your customers purely on the basis they don't like the scent, never mind getting into reactions and infections. Stupid if you ask me....

After bum rash and stinging I finally bought a menstrual cup so yay for me I suppose Xmas Grin

Branleuse · 14/12/2013 10:14

I like them because I do get sweaty down there and I also occasionally have had mild stress incontinence since I had 2 babies in a year, and I definitely dont feel ready to start buying tena lady or anything.

If i dont wear liners, i occasionally notice a slight smell, that id really not have to worry about. These liners are available as an OPTION if you want them. They are something thats available. Noones making you buy them, and theyre not insinuating that you personally have a smelly chuff. I feel relieved that this is a really discreet way to deal with something that bothered me

Deodorants are available if you are prone to sweaty pits. Its not insulting you. Some people actually DO have smelly pits.

Also makeup manufacturers arent actually telling everyone they look like mooses, and high heel manufacturers arent going round calling people shortarses.

UsedToBeNDP · 14/12/2013 10:15

Thrush Central for me. Vile
