She wants to cook one of these

I am helping her on Christmas day to cook the dinner. She has gone to a lot of trouble planning out all the veg and accompaniments which all sound delicious. But I really would like something a little more special than that. It isn't even an issue of cost! I have offered to buy a proper joint of meat and cook it. She said we will discuss it later but I don't want to leave it too long or we wont be able to order one. So I am going to order a boned and rolled turkey breast which can still be bunged in the oven but will taste much nicer.

You have just made me LOL, for which I thank you. YANBU those are horrid, I bought one as a student and it didn't meet even that low level of taste. Although it might still be better than my MIL's signature Sandpaper Turkey. Buy something else as easy to cook. Merry Christmas!

revivingshower · 12/12/2013 23:05

Lol my dh may have to cook Xmas dinner this year and he wants to do one of these. The price will also appeal to him.

revivingshower · 12/12/2013 23:08

But I agree op I am sure your mil can get a naive boned and rolled turkey breast from M&S -maybe with herbs on it!

Nanny0gg · 12/12/2013 23:15

Did she read this bit:
Description: Turkey breast roast formed from turkey breast with added water, soya protein and starch.

choobie · 12/12/2013 23:17

I have to be really careful because one family member has a severe allergy to pork and another is lactose intolerant.

I am defiantly going to find something else other than what she has planned. If she gets cross I will say I thought she told me to go ahead and buy it. If it can just go into the oven without any fuss then I don't see what the difference is (apart from the actual contents.)

Could you perhaps be given or even win a meat joint that you have really no use for that maybe she could help you out by using for Christmas dinner? Wink

choobie · 12/12/2013 23:19

wow m&s have a fantastic range! pricey but it all looks mouth watering

Tbh, that Bernard Matthews thing wouldn't feed a family, anyway.

rockybalboa · 12/12/2013 23:30

Oooh that looks gross. Wrong on so many levels.

TalkativeJim · 12/12/2013 23:33

Call her and say that you hadn't realised it had soya protein in it - you had a reaction to that last year, and could you please have real meat.

choobie · 12/12/2013 23:36

I think she was planning on buying a few.

I have just ordered a big joint of turkey from a local farm shop online.

Phew disaster averted. I don't know why she thought it would be suitable, as I said cost isn't an issue, my grandfather is paying and would happily pay for a proper joint of meat. I am just trying to source a pork free version of pigs in blankets and then everything will be perfect :D

Fowl.

ouryve · 12/12/2013 23:43

Pork free pigs in blankets?!

Well, you could buy turkey bacon and chicken sausages? Or Sainsburys sell duck sausages.

MerryChristmasMollyHooper · 12/12/2013 23:51

Reminds me of my dinners, I wouldn't buy it now but it was yummy back then. Xmas Grin

Just insist you want to contribute something as she is doing so much. Flatter, flatter.

MammaTJ · 12/12/2013 23:53

Turkey crown from iceland is about a tenner and a much better option than that.

MerryChristmasMollyHooper · 12/12/2013 23:54

School dinners!

Veggie sausages and 'Facon'? You'd have to roll them up yourself but I think could be enjoyable.

choobie · 12/12/2013 23:59

thanks will look at all the pork free alternatives. I don't think the family would forgive me if we had to spend Christmas in hospital because I let pork slip into the meal!

LineRunner · 13/12/2013 00:04

Just be careful with the turkey 'bacon'. It's quite dry (not much fat) and cooks quickly. So you might need to cook your venison (or whatever) sausages for a bit before universal them.

LineRunner · 13/12/2013 00:05

Universal? Wtf??

That should be 'you wrap'. Before you wrap them.

choobie · 13/12/2013 00:06

oh thanks for the tip. I have never tried it before. I will do a little trial run before Christmas day :)

LineRunner · 13/12/2013 00:10

choobie, may I also add that I think the most frightening aspect of your mother's plan is that she intends to buy more than one of the Bernard Matthews things.

tracypenisbeaker · 13/12/2013 00:17

Airplane food on Christmas day. Yum

BlackholesAndRevelations · 13/12/2013 07:18

Yuk!

Grin @ "fowl"
