Painter decorator quote for master in a typical
1930'a semi.

Just to paint walls, woodwork and ceiling plus paper 1 wall- £300 they will supply gloss abd ceiling paint.
That's price for 2 of them working a day and 1/2.
We would have to strip and prep walls for them.

Seems a tad steep am I a cheep sake don't mind to be told I am just honest answers please- I in the midlands

I am in the midlands

Considering they are doing the woodwork as well I think that's pretty reasonable.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 12/12/2013 18:36

Actually just realised they are supplying gloss and ceiling paint too so yes a fair price

TinyDiamond · 12/12/2013 18:37

it is spot on. I am in Leicester and my dad is a decorator and charges 100 per day. So for two people at 1.5 it is right. In fact it is good including the paints.

BlousyMumsyTwat · 12/12/2013 18:38

Think about it for a moment! 2 men @ 1.5 days = 3 man days

3 man days @ 300 quid minus paint. Minus tax. Minus NI.

Is it even minimum wage?

Wishfulmakeupping · 12/12/2013 18:41

Think its that firstly we have to strip walls is this usual?
And that there's 2 of them I would think that 1 could get that size room done In a day and half what do you think?
Typical 1930's master bedroom size

Wishfulmakeupping · 12/12/2013 18:42

Maybe it takes longer than I think though?

They will have to allow drying time too- normally several hours before you can put the next coat on. My bathroom paint says to allow 6 hours between coats!

Sheissmallandveryspidery · 12/12/2013 19:16

Not expensive.

How much did you expect to pay?

Igloofornow · 12/12/2013 19:19

That's a good price I'd say, don't think you could get much cheaper really. Would you be able to do it yourself? We do all painting diy as we can't justify the expense.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 12/12/2013 19:20

Well if they did the stripping and prep work then you should expect to pay more as IME that takes up a lot of time. I generally do all the painting in our house a room can take me several days when it includes woodwork.

princessalbert · 12/12/2013 19:21

I have always done our decorating. So have never paid out.

But it doesn't sound overly expensive to me, given the cost of paints too.

GlaikitInAPearTree · 12/12/2013 19:24

Spot on IMO. As others have said how much would the paint cost, then factor in the hourly rate the guys are getting.

What were you expecting the quote to be?

Get a few more quotes though. Always sensible.

lifesgreatquestions · 12/12/2013 19:25

It's cheap for where I live, you're not paying for how long it would take you, you're paying to not have to do it.

BellaVita · 12/12/2013 19:25

Sounds about right.

We had our whole house decorated two years ago (except for bedroom 2 and 4 as I had done them 6 months before for my DS's). He broke it down room by room and it all came to £1600, the living room being £300. He supplied ceiling paint and gloss and we had to provide all wall paint.

We are in Yorkshire.

ScarletLady02 · 12/12/2013 19:27

3 days for £300 for skilled tradesmen - minus materials etc....seems fine to me and DH does jobs like this.

DoJo · 12/12/2013 19:28

Sounds reasonable to me too, especially if they are doing the woodwork in gloss paint which takes ages to dry. Then there are all the time consuming and fiddly bits like removing light fittings and plug sockets to paint behind them, masking off the edges of everything else and making sure everything in the room is splatter free and clean when they leave. (Can you tell I've been doing a LOT of decorating recently?!)

jammietart · 12/12/2013 19:30

Seems good to me. poss more like 2 days work. papering can be labour intensive depending on the paper

BikeRunSki · 12/12/2013 19:31

Woodwork takes a very long time and is tedious and fiddly. I think it sounds like a good deal.

notsomuchroomattheinn · 12/12/2013 19:31

I would expect them to prep the walls as well as to me proper prep is part of the reason for paying a professional over doing it yourself.

rainbowfeet · 12/12/2013 19:31

Sounds really reasonable to me Smile

lljkk · 12/12/2013 19:31

Similar to what I have been quoted for similar.

StoorieHoose · 12/12/2013 19:37

All the work is in the prep not the woodwork. Yes you are stripping the paper but they will have to make good by filling etc which means more drying time between fills

notsomuchroomattheinn · 12/12/2013 19:37

Remember trade paint is a lot cheaper than B&Q etc if they have a good relationship with the builders merchant.

StoorieHoose · 12/12/2013 19:38

Oh and if they do produce a roll of masking tape I would assume that they were rubbish and not qualified tradesmen but handymen

Real painters don't need masking tape
