To despair at the RSPCA

For some time now, I have been concerned about two dogs living with a neighbour. My concern is shared with my other neighbours.

For months now, both dogs have been sleeping outside in a draughty conservatory with a cement floor, with only a thin blanket to lie on. All day, they are outside the conservatory in all weathers, barking and howling.

One of the dogs is emaciated and has green pus in both his eyes.

The other dog is younger and seems in ok condition, but both dogs are very dirty and smelly. Their environment is covered in faeces and absolutely honks.

The woman who owns them has been a difficult neighbour since she arrived - she is verbally abusive, leaves rubbish outside her house and is generally rude and difficult.

For some years, she lived with a man who was violent towards her - I was very worried about her. She may be difficult, but she’s only young. I called the police when I saw him beating her and eventually he left and was put in prison for theft (he’d been in prison several times before).

Worryingly, they have a small child, although I don’t think the father is involved any more.

I don’t think this lady can cope with the dogs. She never walks them (or if she does, it is hardly ever) and they are left alone, sometimes all day and night.

Each dog cost her several thousand pounds each. Her family are very rich. I say this because she is clearly not unable to pay for vet treatment.

I called the RSPCA three times last week and explained the situation.

The local dog warden came yesterday because both dogs had escaped from the house and were roaming the street. The one that has pus filled eyes and is emaciated is a large, mastiff type dog and has attacked a neighbour’s dog. The concern was that he might have attacked a child as he escaped just before the school run.

The dog warden told me that she has had umpteen complaints about this woman and her dogs.

Yesterday, the lady’s pet rabbit was found dead (by my other neighbour) outside the woman’s garden. I am not sure what killed it, but it’s fur was v matted indeed (I saw the body). She has had many pets and most of them have met a bad end by escaping and getting run over :(

Anyway, the RSPCA officer left a message with me today to say that, in her opinion, both dogs were ‘fine’ and ‘receiving ongoing medical treatment’ and the ‘case is closed’.

I know this is not true. The lady is known for lying and told the dog warden a few days ago that she was having the ill dog put to sleep. She did take him to the vet and he was treated for a sore foot. He wasn’t put to sleep.

What else can I do? I can’t stand the idea that these poor dogs are left in a freezing cold yard without adequate shelter over the winter :(

YANBU.

Sometimes it seems as though the RSPCA don't give an actual fuck about animals.

LambinsideaDuckinsideaTrout · 11/12/2013 17:10

Ring again, get each neighbour to ring again. Do it in weekly shifts? Persistence, teamwork.

ClangerOnaComeDown · 11/12/2013 17:12

The RSPCA don't generally give a shiny shit unless there id s camera crew I'm afraid.

I think there was a rather frightening thread in chat yesterday about their general twat-arsery.

Poor animals!

KittensoftPuppydog · 11/12/2013 17:15

Agree about the RSPCA. They just seem to be a money making machine. I have phoned them several times over the past few years and they have been absolutely useless. I'm really angry about them.

NuzzleandScratch · 11/12/2013 17:24

What a sad situation. What about contacting Dogs Trust or Battersea Dogs Home? Perhaps they could advise what to do.

ClangerOnaComeDown · 11/12/2013 17:28

I have always heard good things about the Blue Cross

MammaTJ · 11/12/2013 17:37

When I was reported to the RSPCA for my dog having an 'untreated' skin condition, they came round and checked the dog, then got in touch with the vet to make sure she was undergoing treatment as I had told them.

They have probably done the same in your neighbours case.

BerryChristmas · 11/12/2013 18:10

For years I used to donate monthly to the RSPCA. I've heard so many bad things about them that I stopped. I now donate to The Brooke Donkey Care.

RabbitRabbit78 · 11/12/2013 18:59

The RSPCA inspectors are doing a very hard job whilst being under resourced and overworked. The call volumes they get to their helpline are astounding. A lot of the service you receive depends on the area you're in and who the inspector is, unfortunately (likewise local branches, ours is great, others not so much). Please don't tar the whole organisation for one bad incident - unfortunately they are the best we have and the only organisation willing (and with the resources) to prosecute for abuse.

They receive no government funding and rely entirely in donations, which is something that many people are unaware of!

Damnautocorrect · 11/12/2013 19:03

Unfortunately I'm another voice who gets frustrated with the RSPCA.
Yes they do some fantastic work, but from personal experience they aren't all they are cracked up to be

Lara2 · 11/12/2013 19:07

Not surprised at all sadly. I never give a penny to them and instead, support other animal charities who actually do something for animals.

ConfusedPixie · 11/12/2013 19:08

YANBU. I've reported animal cruelty to them before and they really do not care.

We in the horse world think the RSPCA is a shower of shite too.

As somebody who takes on rescue cats, I find them exceedingly frustrating with their rules and I reckon I'm not the only one who no longer go to the RSPCA when I want to get another animal.

caruthers · 11/12/2013 19:27

We have 3 Cats because the RSPCA couldn't be bothered with either of them.

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 11/12/2013 19:37

I've rung them before and found them fairly useless. Was then very pissed off to get a begging phone call from them a few months later!

Pixel · 11/12/2013 19:38

Same here, I found an injured cat that the RSPCA refused to help. We got her fixed up and she lived with my sister for 12 years until she died of old age.

Pawprint · 11/12/2013 20:10

Thanks all; I am not surprised to hear your experiences.

I will fight on to save these dogs from their appalling conditions. It is hard to sleep when I can hear them crying :(

I agree, there was a whistle blower not long ago from the RSPCA who told about many healthy animals being PTS as there was no room and how all they seemed to care about now was prosecution rather than intervention and/or support. Hold on I will look for a link...

Caitlin17 · 11/12/2013 21:52

I'm sorry to hear that. As far as I know the up SSPCA up here do a good job. Could you keep at them? Or the police or Blue Cross

ConferencePear · 11/12/2013 22:04

I've had to contact them twice. Once about a dog and the other about a horse. They were completely useless both times. I stopped donating ages ago.

BuntyPenfold · 11/12/2013 22:26

I have reported seriously ill- treated dogs twice, the RSPCA did not want to know.
My children were very distressed as well, to find that they would not help at all and were willing to leave the dogs in wretched circumstances :(

We had all thought they would help.

Pawprint · 12/12/2013 08:29

It's true that they PTS animals who are healthy.

Bloody RSPCA.

I found a young badger once hiding under the wheel of the land rover. It's whole side was one big, open maggotty wound, but it was alive. Clearly suffering enormously, so I called the RSPCA as all I wanted was for the poor, wretched creature to be put out of its misery. I even said I'd bury it in the field afterwards. But no, they wouldn't come out. Told me to "monitor it". Quite aside from it being under the wheel of my vehicle, and it would bite my hand off if I tried moving it, what the fuck was I supposed to be looking for?

I called a different organisation and they came and had Jim euthanised. Poor little bugger :(
