DS is 7 months

Around feeding times so about 4/5 times a day, immediately after poos though.

hooochycoo · 11/12/2013 19:44

I don't agree that because they are babies that they are meant to soil themselves.. It's because of the success of the companies selling disposable nappies over the last few generations that we think they are meant to soil themselves. They aren't. They can go to the toilet fine if you give them the opportunity. Even from birth.

elliejjtiny · 11/12/2013 19:46

DS3 is nearly 3. I change him when he gets up in the morning, before lunch, when we are about to go out, before bed and whenever he poos.

DS4 is 6 months. I change him before feeds (while the bottle is warming up) so every 3 hours or so and also when he poos.

hooochycoo · 11/12/2013 19:46

Obviously not "go"to the toilet themselves from newborn, but if you sit/ hold them over a pot/ potty/ loo they will go. From birth.

Purplehonesty · 11/12/2013 19:49

I change Dd (17mo) in the morning, after poos - at least four of those in a day Hmm and before and after naps and bed so probably get through 8 ish in a day.
I too don't like her to be sitting in wee but she doesn't often get the chance as she poos a lot then is changed.
She goes on the toilet too and will wee each time she sits on it. Then cheers!

bluecheeseforbreakfast · 11/12/2013 19:50

Hooochycoo in that case they don't really need nappies at all right? Or they could just be in the same dry pull up for 24 hours?

My ds poos on the potty about 75% of the time and he wees on the potty when he hears his bath running (morning and evening) The rest of the day we are at baby groups, out walking (cold country so lots of layers and a thick snow suit so not so easy to whip ds's clothes of for a quick wee, at friends houses or shopping/visiting the library, using nappies gives me the freedom to do all of these things without having to worry about putting a baby on a toilet.

flossy101 · 11/12/2013 19:52

Mines 18 months and normally 5 changes a day.

2Tinsellytocare · 11/12/2013 19:55

I don't think anyone has advocated leaving them in shitty nappies Hoochycoo

CrohnicallySick · 11/12/2013 20:00

DD is 1 and wears 1 disposable overnight (7pm-8am ish). She is changed into cloth after breakfast, after nap, mid afternoon, and bed. Generally she poos in her night time nappy, otherwise it's mid morning before nap and then we don't bother with the after nap change. I aim to change her at around the 4 hour mark, though her cloth nappies can go 6 hours at a push.

Lamu · 11/12/2013 20:08

Dd 2.3, goes through probably about 3-4 nappies per 24 hr period. We're on the cusp of potty training so some days we go nappy free if we're at home.

hooochycoo · 11/12/2013 20:09

Oh aye, I totally agree, use nappies without a doubt. Everyone has accidents, and there's more to life than putting your baby on the loo. But use them as insurance against accidents, not as a toilet attached to your baby.fair enough that noone's advocated leaving a baby in shit, but only three changes a day forces the baby to piss and shot in it!

lilyaldrin · 11/12/2013 20:13

Cloth nappies - every 2-3 hours probably, except for one overnight.

Disposables - if no poos, then easily 4-5 hours.

amyjayde · 11/12/2013 20:13

Immediately if there is poop or it looks full from a big wee but its usually every two hours, I hate the thought of her sitting in her wee Hmm

Artandco · 11/12/2013 20:20

Why? Because the thought of leaving them in wee is horrid

I also don't encourage them to just wee/ poo if if they can do elsewhere. How hard is it really to take baby out bath, dry, and pop on toilet before adding nappy? How hard is it to put them on the toilet at every/ most changes? How many people only change 3 times in 24 hrs, then go onto the other mn boards at complain that their 3.5 year old is still not dry.

It is laziness. We used reusable nappies and wouldn't have dreamed of saving washing by leaving more. Just mentioned to dh and he said that in his opinion it's the same as leaving a baby covered in vomit or not feeding when needed.

bluecheeseforbreakfast · 11/12/2013 20:25

he said that in his opinion it's the same as leaving a baby covered in vomit or not feeding when needed.

Yer because leaving your baby with a dry bum because the nappy has drawn the wee away from the skin is exactly the same as withholding food from them Hmm

Rosieliveson · 11/12/2013 20:29

Baby is 14 weeks change very feed so 3 hours. Also change immediately for a poo and if it starts to feels bulky between feeds. No sign of nappy rash here either Grin

IneedAsockamnesty · 11/12/2013 20:30

I have a continence problem I used to use things like tena lady now I use washables, if I had an incident no matter how much the pad absorbed it didn't feel very nice and the stuff that absorbs moisture just feels different when its done its job.

If I'm not keen on it I wouldn't expect a baby to be.

WhereIsMyHat · 11/12/2013 20:31

Guessing you do EC with your baby artandco? Do you just have the one child?

purplemurple1 · 11/12/2013 20:34

14week old - approx 5 times a day,

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 11/12/2013 20:36

Just been on a 2 week holiday and we got through about 100 so roughly 7 a day.

No routine (other than first / last thing), obviously when he poos plus when it seems to have a lot of wee in plus if it is going to be difficult to change in the next few hours (poor lad is a NSB!) I do a pre-emptive one.

He's 6 m.o.

hooochycoo · 11/12/2013 20:46

I have two kids and ECedthem both, before you get all "i have a busy life'" on artandco. It's not difficult. Just put/hold your baby on the toilet at regular intervals. Like when you go to the toilet. Or change their nappy. Which is when you're usually on the toilet. Infact it usually helps me out! Easier to dress toddler whilst baby is sitting playing with toys on potty and pooing, then dress baby and put poo in toilet, than dress toddler whilst wrangling fidgety baby that needs a poo, and then have to wipe poo off baby.

hooochycoo · 11/12/2013 20:48

Anyway, blah! :-) anonymous Internet blah rant blah!

Artandco · 11/12/2013 20:58

Where - no we didn't ec them. We just used nappies but gave them a chance to empty bowels before new nappy. What's the point in putting new nappy on for them to wee in 2 secs later.
We actually both work full time and had little maternity leave. It's far quicker IMO to let them go in toilet than to change nappy then change nappy 5 mins later as they have pooed. We have x2 children with a small gap.

We might work a lot of hours but come on everyone has a few mins to make sure baby/ child is changed and clean. If you work 12 hr days you don't just piss yourself as an adult as no time do you

bluecheeseforbreakfast · 11/12/2013 21:06

I wonder, those of you who change your dc as soon as they wee, do you change your pad/tampon every time it has blood on it when you have your period? I'd be in the loo all day if that is expected!

anonpost · 11/12/2013 21:24

Dd is 14 months..change her every 2/3 hours. More often if she does a poo.
