to hate it when the verse and the chorus don't go together? Like Live and Let Die.

They were playing Live and Let Die in a shop earlier (yes, very festive). It's always struck me that the elements of the song really don't go together.

You've got the nice melodic bit at the beginning, which is fine.

But then, you suddenly get "Live and let die boom boom", followed by Da da da, da da da, mad drums, dum dum dum dum.

Then the perky "what does it matter to you, you've got a a job to do". More da da da, etc.

Then suddenly. Gentle bit again. Then frantic bit again.

It really does sound like he had a lot of unfinished song ideas which he cobbled together.

That's your problem with the song? Really? You've picked that over "this ever changing world in which we live in"?

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 06/12/2013 14:27

I do completely agree with you. A very unsettling song.

Although I am feeling unsettled generally so that may be affecting my judgement.

MardyBra · 06/12/2013 14:28

Yanbu over the poor grammar too Hassled.

I really like it! Grin

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 06/12/2013 14:29

What about Bohemian Rhapsody, which really is songs cobbled together?

MardyBra · 06/12/2013 14:29

Do They Know It's Christmas is another culprit.

But I think I saw on a documentary once that it actually was cobbled together from a couple of songs Bob and Midge were working on separately. And it was for charidee, so they're sort of forgiven.

I really like Bohemian Rhapsody, because it feels like they planned it as a strange mini opera. There is a flow of ideas imo.

Paul McCartney has form for this sort of mishmash though - A Day in The Life, Beatles. You get the beautiful John bit "I read the news today, oh boy" - and then randomly Paul bursts in with his chirpy "Woke up, got out of bed" bit which just buggers up the song.

rpitchfo · 06/12/2013 14:32

Yea as a bit an amateur very often you will have two songs that are average on their own but can kind of go together to make a slightly better song. It's quite noticeable often

Bekindtoyourknees · 06/12/2013 14:32

It's because it was written especially for the film.

mousmous · 06/12/2013 14:33

I love that song.
so yabu
pmc's voice on the other hand....

MardyBra · 06/12/2013 14:34

Did they specifically request a disjointed song Bekind?

"And if this ever changing world in which we're livin'
makes you give up and cry"

Nothing wrong with the grammar.

Panzee · 06/12/2013 14:34

ELO songs are like this too.

And it's this ever changin' world in which we're living....

ProfondoRosso · 06/12/2013 14:34

I hate Live and Let Die for this very reason. I had to dance to it in a James Bond themed show when I was a child and we had to do a horrible hip-swinging move to that cod-reggae bit in the middle.

No way I love that chirpy bit! It's stuck in my head now Grin

X post :)

zeno · 06/12/2013 14:35

I always heard it as "this ever changing world in which we're living".

KhunZhoop · 06/12/2013 14:36

One of the best songs ever. So there.

pianodoodle · 06/12/2013 14:36

Yes ELO do this and it works!

MardyBra · 06/12/2013 14:39

Shit, I wish I hadn't started this thread about Paul McCartney, because now I inexplicably have an earworm of The Frog Chorus.

this ever changin' world in which we're living - that makes WAY more sense. How did I never spot that?

MardyBra · 06/12/2013 14:44

Just looked it up on wiki Hassled

"Many comments have been made over the years about the lyrics that ambiguously are either "this ever changing world in which we live in" or "this ever changing world in which we're living". The "in which we live in" version has been cited as being redundant and/or improper grammar. When asked about the lyrics, McCartney responded that he doesn't remember for sure himself, but that he thinks it is "in which we're living".

I love the fact that Macca doesn't know whether he meant to be grammatical or not.

The most recent example of two songs squashed together that I can think of is The Feeling's Never Been Lonely.

MardyBra · 06/12/2013 14:48

I agree Panzee. It trundles along really nicely and then suddenly staccato:

"B B B Baby, I think I'm going C C C Crazy..."
