To NOT buy new school shoes and make DS wear trainers to school for the next two weeks?

DS (11) came home from school on Wednesday with the sole of one of his 4 week old shoes almost completely ripped off. The other shoe has a large hole in the side. These were his second pair of shoes this term as I had to replace the shoes he started with in September at half term as he had ripped the fronts of them off.

Both pairs were mid priced shoes. One pair was £30, the other pair £25. I know it's not the shoes as his twin brother's are a bit scuffed but not ripped apart. I also will never again pay more for that on shoes as it seems the more expensive they are, the less they last IME with this particular son!

All through primary, I was having to replace shoes every 6 weeks and I am now officially PISSED OFF! I am not buying him another pair that he will have scuffed by the end of the term so starts back in January in damaged shoes. I could also do without the expense what with 4 DC, DD's birthday and Christmas looming.

I have told him to wear his PE trainers which are black, heavy duty and in perfect condition!

His teacher has told him that he needs new shoes by Monday Hmm. I don't care if school are not happy and he gets told off.

as an ex teacher yabu. I didn't give a toss what they had on their feet tbh but if someone in my form was in trainers I got hassle over it. I never really understand parents and school uniform, most say they are pro uniform but don't actually bother to make sure kids are properly dressed. The form teacher then gets it in the neck.

CreamyCooler · 06/12/2013 18:28

Are you saying most parents are pro uniform or most parents don't bother to send their children in the proper clothes. Because if it's the second I strongly disagree with that.

brettgirl2 · 06/12/2013 18:30

I'm talking obviously about the school I worked at. .... Yes, that was the case in my experience.

CreamyCooler · 06/12/2013 18:36

That must have been very frustrating.

Oodmaiden · 06/12/2013 18:37

Creamy - I have worked in lots of schools where a significant proportoin of the class (sometimes up to 25%) are not wearing ANY item of school uniform. And many others are wearing just a school jumper over everyday clothes.

And these are primary schools with a uniform policy... Which obviously isn't strictly enforced! :S

InsanityandBeyond · 06/12/2013 18:42

Brettgirl2 DS wears all the correct items of uniform thanks - blazer, tie, optional jumper which has to be a certain make, correctly cut trousers, tie, black socks, even black gloves and scarf (which he has lost!). Thankfully they don't dictate what colour his boxers should be!

His trainers are leather look ones. They actually could pass for shoes but for the piping.

I feel a bit silly now as I wasn't aware of this. I live in an average type of area and the school is strict on uniform. That's why I said up thread I couldn't send my son in knowing he would get into trouble.

Oodmaiden · 06/12/2013 19:02

I think it depends a lot on the school, Creamy. My children's schools are VERY strict on uniform - but I am a supply teacher and work all over. In my experience, it tends to be schools in less affluent areas where it is less likely to be pushed. I was really surprised to be honest when I first walked into a classroom with so many children out of uniform...

no offence to you personally, but not in my experience

ilovesooty · 06/12/2013 19:31

Agree with brettgirl2

The teachers don't make the rules but they will get it in the neck from SMT when they're broken.

mumofweeboys · 06/12/2013 19:49

Sports direct or asda - you can get a pair for less then £10

NigellasLeftNostril · 06/12/2013 20:10
