To wish people had the common decency to tidy up after themselves in busy fast food restaurants

Christmas shopping today with ds2 (22months) and we stopped to get lunch at McDonalds. It was really busy. We eventually saw that a couple were about to leave, they could see we were waiting for a seat, they got up and went leaving their mess behind for me to tidy up before we sat down to eat.

The staff at my local MacDonalds are so ultra attentive I never even get the chance to try and clear up! I honestly think they'd feed me if I sat still with my mouth open and pointed into it like pac-man.

mrsjay · 06/12/2013 09:04

I hate it all they need to do it put their rubbish on the tray and bin it on the way out lazy buggers

jammiedonut · 06/12/2013 09:05

There are big bins on the way out for customers to empty their trays, i just can't understand why you wouldn't do it. It's not difficult.

MaidOfStars · 06/12/2013 09:20

I am happy to clear my own table at any fast food place where bins are provided.

However, I often don't drink all of my pop. Every single time, this causes me stress. Do I chuck it in the bin anyway? Do I leave it on the tray? But that means the next clearer-upper can't put their tray on the stack.... arghhhh, won't someone tell me where to dispose of my pop?

mrsjay · 06/12/2013 09:22

Maidofstars i am the same the drink is always too big for me so I sometimes leave it on top of the bin, I dont want some poor worker getting cola all down them but I suppose the rubbish is in bin liners but i always think It will be mine that is spilt down them

YABU

Cleaning up after yourself is in the same vein as using self-checkouts at supermarkets. The company would like us to do it as it increases their profits for one reason or another (there is no other reason).

Do you think it's unreasonable for people not to use self-checkouts when the manned checkouts are busy? This is another behaviour that big businesses are trying to instill as 'normal' in customers - again because it increases their profits.

When I pay money for food in a restaurant - even a fast food restaurant - I don't expect to have to clean up after myself. I do that at home. If I have to pay money AND cleanup, I might as well stay at home and cook some beans on toast.

I'm waiting for Tescos to begin 'suggesting' that shoppers spend 10 minutes unloading lorries before they're allowed to shop.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 06/12/2013 10:29

Clear your table or don't clear your table. Who cares? But I'll tell you what. Don't make a point of being a knobhead and telling the staff you don't intend to. That shit gets remembered. No one holds on to a grudge tighter than a minimum wage public facing FOOD serving employee. :o

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 06/12/2013 12:23

And the yucky half eaton food and screwed up potentially snotty tissues are not being cleaned up by the big wigs of McDonald's, it's the often minimum wage staff

If you hate mcdonalds that much don't go in there, your lack of table CLEARING ability does not make mcdonalds change it's procedures it just make the staffs job more unpleasant

sashh · 06/12/2013 12:35

Not while they call themselves a 'restaurant', nope.

If they say they are a cafe or a fast food place I will but in I wouldn't clear a my table in an restaurant

HamletsSister · 06/12/2013 12:39

YABU. We go "out" to eat so that we are fed, the washing up is done and our table is cleared. We don't pop into the kitchen to give a hand with the dishes, to stir the soup or to help assemble the burgers. It is part of a slow slide into customers doing everything for themselves which makes big corporations more profitable and, quite frankly, the day more pressured and unpleasant.

On that basis, however, I don't eat in "self clear" restaurants at all because I think they are disgusting both in the way they treat their staff and the way they treat their customers. I frequent places where they smile, find you a table and treat you as something more than the end of a factory process.

Chattymummyhere · 06/12/2013 12:50

I don't in any other restaurant so why would I in this one? Everything is stacked neatly just like when I go to other places so it is simple for the staff to remove and do what they need with it.

Now somewhere like sub way yes I would but it does my claim to be a restaurant
