To wish people had the common decency to tidy up after themselves in busy fast food restaurants

Christmas shopping today with ds2 (22months) and we stopped to get lunch at McDonalds. It was really busy. We eventually saw that a couple were about to leave, they could see we were waiting for a seat, they got up and went leaving their mess behind for me to tidy up before we sat down to eat.
Aibu?

"yup, tbh i dont give a shit about your toddler"

Wow, bet people love being around you.

IamInvisible · 05/12/2013 20:32

You sound delightful maddy.

A person who works in a fast food restaurant should be given the same respect as someone who works in a high end restaurant so I behave as they expect me to depending where I am.

When I go somewhere like McDonalds I know they expect you to put your rubbish in the bin, that's why they are provided, so that is what me and my DC do.

YANBU.

Sirzy · 05/12/2013 20:32

and if you have spilt something like Jam on the floor surely the common sense thing is to tell the staff so they can ensure it is cleaned up properly?

squeakytoy · 05/12/2013 20:32

yanbu.. and I should be surprised by them number of people who seem to think walking away leaving all their crap behind is acceptable manners. It isnt.

Nobody is expecting customers to mop the floor or wipe the tables, but at least have the common decency to leave the table clear for the next person who is waiting to sit down. Is it really so bloody difficult to pile all your empty packaging onto the tray and tip it into one of the numerous bins.

IamInvisible · 05/12/2013 20:34

Sorry, maddy Blush I don't have my glasses on, I didn't mean you I meant Hanne.

CrohnicallySick · 05/12/2013 20:34

Also, my local mcdonalds charges a slightly higher price for eating in (or is it a discount for eating out?). Either way, what is the extra amount I'm paying for, if not so that someone comes and clears up after me?

complexnumber · 05/12/2013 20:34

I only ever eat McD et al in shopping malls. And there has always been loads of other free tables around.

Hence I rarely bother, and feel no guilt.

It's a fast food outlet! And all that is asked of you is that you eat your food and bugger off.

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 05/12/2013 20:36

You get what you pay for.

tiggerpigger · 05/12/2013 20:37

If it was really busy and icould see someone waiting for my table, I would. Otherwise no fucking way would I do unpaid work for mcdonalds. They should hire enough staff to keep their "restaurant" (as they call it) clean.

ICameOnTheJitney · 05/12/2013 20:38

I know what Crohnically means actually. Why are they "self clean"? I'll tell you why so that THEY can make more money...that's why. So they can employ less staff. Perhaps we ought to look at McDonalds and blame them for their shit service.

Who says fast food must mean the customer clears up? Why? Because the food is so glorious that we must be just dying to express our appreciation to the multi billion pound company by working for them for free?

Crowler · 05/12/2013 20:39

I can't form an opinion on people not clearing up in an empty restaurant. It may be rude, it may displace jobs, who knows.

Anyone who would leave their garbage behind when they can see people descending upon their table, on the other hand, is a wanker.

Salmotrutta · 05/12/2013 20:39

It's a thing you are supposed to do in fast food places surely?!

You just put the rubbish in the bin - it's not arduous and nobody expects you to get our a J-Cloth and some Dettox... Hmm

Even in waitress service restaurants I put napkins and detritus on the plates to save the staff a wee bit of work.

HanneHolm and maddy - consideration of others need only involve a two second trip to the bin.

Shaky · 05/12/2013 20:39

I do clear up and wipe the table with baby wipes. I would never just get up and leave all my rubbish on the table for. Someone else to clean up.

Even my 4 year old helps put the rubbish in the bin. The lovely assistant in McDonald's praised him for being so helpful and gave him a balloon, he was chuffed to bits Grin

WooWooOwl · 05/12/2013 20:39

They probably didn't register you and your toddler if they are the sort of people that choose not to clear their own table in a restaurant, and they probably didn't consciously think about leaving their stuff for ten next customer.

They are more likely to have been thinking bait what they were going to do after they left the place that they had just paid to eat in that employs people to do the cleaning and tidying.

Snargaluff · 05/12/2013 20:39

And this is one of the reasons that I finally left fast food work (and went into teaching, possibly a bad choice!), because selfish customers can't pick up their own wrappers and put them in the bin.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 05/12/2013 20:40

If Mcdonalds didnt want the customer to clear up, they wouldnt put the bins in the main eating area.

Clear up after yourselves messy people.

rosebudandvodka · 05/12/2013 20:40

It's just manners and decency.
Leaving your rubbish for someone else to clear up isn't on.

Salmon I know it's a "thing" you're meant to do but who decided? The chains that's who. Why? To save their fucking money. I DO clear up after my DC in fast food restaurants of course but I do always think "Why can't the staff do this?"

The bins are nasty and the SNAP shut lids always trap my hand which I hate...they're germ ridden!

Crowler · 05/12/2013 20:42

I agree needaholiday. I am philosophically opposed to any kind of leave it for the cleaner sort of stuff. I understand it's their job, yada yada yada, but it makes me cringe.

Tweasels · 05/12/2013 20:43

Fucking hell, there's some jumped up people about.

It's McDonalds not the Fucking Ivy. You are not paying for someone to clear up after you. You are paying very little for food they get you really quickly. Clearing up after yourself helps keep the costs low and every thing moving faster.

Those of you who expect someone to clean up after you who you know will be on less than the living wage, do you leave them a tip? Bet you don't.

Cleorapter · 05/12/2013 20:44

YANBU

people should clean up after themselves.

I really want a macdonalds now...

Salmotrutta · 05/12/2013 20:44

Maybe this is why so many of my pupils have the attitude that it's okay to tip their pencil-sharpenings, torn bits of paper, rubber ...erm...rubbings all over the floor. Hmm

Because obviously the cleaner will come along and tidy it all up for them.

Life itself is "germ-ridden" Jitney.

You know, like toilet door handles and so-on... Hmm

And there is no "N" in my nickname by the way.
