to not buy a furby for my 4yo?

Brittapie · 04/12/2013 21:21

The kids wrote santa letters when with my mum one day and sent them off, all well and good. Both children asked for a "furby boom" - DD1 is nearly 7 and DD2 is just turned 4.

Neither me or my mum even knew furbies were still a thing, so we looked them up and THEY COST A BLOODY FORTUNE!

Not only that, but they look far too complex for DD2 anyway, who is still into Thomas and Numberjacks and so on, and breaks things quite a lot too, because she still has tantrums and gets over excited and runs into walls etc.

I can just about afford to buy them one each, but it will be a stretch, and everything else will have to be mega cheap.

I've tried the "Santa can only bring one big present and you want something with Thomas on, don't you?" which just got tears, because Santa is magic...

HELP!

I'm in the same position except my child is 6 years old. The answer is NO. I do feel like a cow, but 1) I can't afford it and 2) I doubt if it is value for money. It is just tough luck, my LO may feel sad or left out, but I refuse to spend limited resources on ridiculously expensive toys - or, what's worse, actually get into debt or skimp on other things. You are absolutely not BU.

WaffilyVersatile · 04/12/2013 21:48

Stop stressing. My dd asked for a furby too so as an experiment I took her to Tesco, pointed her at the toy aisle (where furbys were on display) and asked her if she had to pick ONE toy right that moment what would it be.. It wasn't the furby. It was a Barbie and horse (£20 less than the furby)

Its just a toy and I bet you are more worked up about it now than they will be when they don't get one x

Spent out on a desperately wanted Furby last Xmas for my ten year old. With the exception of Xmas day she has played with it for no more than 1 or 2 hours in the whole year. Her 4 year old sibling has manged to "borrow" it and has probably used it about double that. Complete waste of money.

citruslemon · 04/12/2013 22:58

DD was given a fur by for her 5th birthday in May. Played with until batteries ran, now it's sat on her bookshelf and she doesn't seem remotely interested in it. So wouldn't recommend.

ScarletLady02 · 04/12/2013 23:01

The only thing Furbys are good for is being able to do THIS with them

Sorry...not helpful...I hate the creepy little bastards

pigsDOfly · 04/12/2013 23:04

Bloody hell. Just google Furby out of interest as had no idea what they are. £80 for a piece of talking plastic and nylon. Are they mad!

Well, clearly they're not mad as they're charging a fortune for something that probably costs pence to make.

My children are no longer children iuswim, but if they were, there's no way I'd waste my money on something like that.

Bigfingers · 04/12/2013 23:05

also bought last Xmas. seems like a complete waste of money to me, they don't do much. occasionally the DCs will get interested for a day or two then the annoying little bastard it gets put in a dark cupboard to shut it up and they forget about it for weeks, months maybe.

Don't waste limited funds is my advice!!

plentyofsoap · 04/12/2013 23:05

My friend got two for her dds last xmas. They never got played with and died.

If you don't get a furby boom they are cheaper because the newer model is out. Keep an eye on the hotdealsuk website as they have published details of many reduced price furbies

WalkOutTheFuckingDoor · 05/12/2013 00:30

I got dd one but used a littlewoods 30 off £60 code......very have one too.

Still not cheap but not as painful.

MammaTJ · 05/12/2013 00:33

YANBU.

I cannot say otherwise, as DD age 8 and DS age 7 have asked for one each and will not be getting one!

Well if YABU, then IAT (I am Too) and I never am!

Overpriced pile of, never to played with again after Christmas day, shite!!

sweetiepie1979 · 05/12/2013 00:42

No, your right, dont do it, don't let them fall for the hype.

YANBU

Lurkymclurker · 05/12/2013 01:09

Not sure if it's useful but mcdonalds are doing furby toys at the minute, you can buy them separate from food for 99p each so you could get them both a family of little ones??

ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight · 05/12/2013 01:47

Don't do it! I got one for dd1 last time they were a big thing (think she was about four or five y/o so about 14 years ago.
First thing she did two days after I sold my soul for it was give it a bath in the sink.

My very dutiful bil queued for 2 hours a couple of years ago for one for my 4 year old niece and it was played with for 5 minutes. It's really boring and over priced. I am haunted by the image of him following her around trying to get her to be delighted by its ugly blinking eyes.

CrohnicallySick · 05/12/2013 06:49

Tip for anyone wanting to buy a furby- they're £45 by The Entertainer toy shop on eBay.

CrohnicallySick · 05/12/2013 06:49

(The furby boom, I mean)

pajamapants1 · 05/12/2013 07:46

My 7ds saved up for a furby and played with it for a week and now its in some box some where, on the bright side the 2year old loved it and it seemed pretty much indestructable!

chillykitty · 05/12/2013 17:42

Don't buy
Got my dds 4 and 7 one each lasShock Xmas
Novelty wears off quickly
Very expensive
Batteries run out quickly
Get boring

LuciusMalfoyisSmokingHot · 05/12/2013 17:50

Pointless expensive crap they are, and they are proper creepy, the old ones used to go off on their own in the middle of the night.

They might have asked but dont feel you have to buy it, its better to get something that will last.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 05/12/2013 18:16

If you don't get one for your kids, can you buy one for me please?! Grin

OvO · 05/12/2013 18:20

I have bought one for my DS1 (9) and if he doesn't play with it I will! I put batteries in it to make sure it worked before wrapping it and I didn't want to give it to him. Blush. It's so cute.

If you do want one keep an eye on Amazon prices. I got a blue waves boom for £33 a few weeks ago.

buddyfingy · 05/12/2013 19:09

My brother and I shared one years ago. It lived in the airing cupboard after about two months forever and instilled a deep seated fear of ever going into said cupboard in case you woke the creepy bugger up. I still believe that this was engineered by DF who believed that only ONE towel per person was necessary Grin
