Son has just told me that they have to line up and take a bible and say thank you - seems like some group is coming to the school to distribute them. AIBU to be surprised and think this is strange? My son doesn't believe in God and doesn't particularly want a bible or have to thank someone for it. Is this common practice then?

uselessinformation technically true, but one muslim country recently made it illegal to use the word Allah to refer to the christian god so I guess that not everyone sees that as clearly.

As for tearing it up. I hate waste so I'd dislike it for that reason, though when I was a kid I went through mine with colored highlighters to help me find bits again. Good thing I didn't read the Koran at that age or they'd have had to kill me for desecrating it.

That link about the school in East Kilbride was interesting (can you imagine the talk in the playground at drop off and pick up time) and shows that somethjng as simple as abible being given out etc can actually have much more to it and the schoolisn't always to be trusted. I think parents put trust in their school that any outside organisations they bring in or projects they run are beyond reproach. The schools don't always get it right. I happily supported my schools Operation Christmas child shoebox sheme till I found out more about it and realised it was run by an organisation I cannot support or agree in any way. I was a bit put out that I felt fooled into supporting this group as I had trusted that the school would vet and look into any organisation that might be contentious and against what many of the parents would probably agree with.
