I don't know, mayor - other than the final they were pretty good in South Africa. And maybe the spectacular fail two years ago will have taught them a bit of useful humility. They can't be worse than England, who think they are much better than they are, or Italy, who tend to play such defensive football that watching paint dry is more entertaining, or some of the South American sides, who seem to wish they had weapons to help in their general brutality.

I absolutely love it when England get kicked out in the first stages. That's when the tv goes off in disgust in our house, and that suits me fine.

The Dutch also played sublimely in the group stages of the euros in 2008 beating France, Italy and Romania (I was there!) really convincingly. Of course it all fell apart when they met Russia in the knock out stage ((who went on to be losing finalists if I remember correctly).

So what with that, and the Constantly losing on penalties, supporting holland and England is a pretty similar experience!!

To be fair, Italy have improved in terms of playing entertaining football. And though it galls me to say it, I really do rate the Germans. I'd like to see a European side take the title over in Brazil, and if one manages it, it's probably going to be either Spain or Germany.

Well of course holland beat the brazilians last time out pointy. I watched it in a bar in Palma, Italy, with a huge contingent of drunk Dutch seed salesmen who I'd never met before. Most amusing!

I was at work when one of my colleagues (who was Brazilian) popped in, having watched it on the Internet on a University connection. Of course we, being NHS on the same site, couldn't.

Thing is, Holland have a way of bottling it when they really need to win - the QF against Russia in 2008 was a shining example, and so was their utter non-performance against Spain in 2010. It's as if they lose their nerve and are reduced to timid incompetence or violent incompetence - take your pick...
