What I miss most about living in the UK is not any of the food. It's the non stop live broadcasts of speed skating that used to light up our weekends growing up. We'd all curl up together in front of the telly, do a bit of homework, cheer on our boys and girls and bond as a family. There's nothing like it.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/12/2013 22:08

Yeah but at least you don't have to endure all the deardful Amstel fuelled sing-a-long music eh?

But thanks for the hug lekker stuk!

I think I might take some annual leave while it's on so I can stay up all sorts of ungodly hours to follow it. Can't wait. I follow Holland avidly too.

PointyChristmasFairyWand · 03/12/2013 23:01

My parents and I drank wine instead.... Amstel is dire stuff.
Dikke knuffel!

BitOutOfPractice · 03/12/2013 23:09

Aww I'm getting the Dutch nostalgia! I may have to go and slip into something orange!

Bloody hell you jinxed us soul!!!

Holland v Spain as well. Hope Holland get revenge for last time and don't kick lumps out of Spain like theydid then

PointyChristmasFairyWand · 06/12/2013 18:54

Holland v Spain isn't great, but at least it's their first match so they can just play their best without it being a life or death situation. Might take the pressure off a little and allow them to play football instead of warfare.

The rest of the group isn't too bad, not nearly as bad as Eurodisaster 2012.

Bazoo23 · 06/12/2013 20:18

wtf? why do people support other national teams?
No wonder England are so poor, read the negativity on this thread!
Japan/Australia etc all know they have no chance but still get behind there team with passion!
Plastic supporters...

squoosh · 06/12/2013 20:21

I don't think you can say that the success or failure of a national team is down to their fans. If that were the case Ireland would win every tournament going!

Surely only the people on the pitch are responsible for winning a match.

dreamingbohemian · 06/12/2013 20:24

Well some of us aren't English for one thing

Bazoo23 · 06/12/2013 20:26

Steven Gerrard - "Hearing the fans singing YNWA when we were 3-0 down at half time revived 11 broken and shattered men. We share this victory with them. The atmosphere in the stadium lifted us to this win."

Support has plenty to do with it.

Bazoo23 · 06/12/2013 20:27

so you support your own national team? Like everyone should...

squoosh · 06/12/2013 20:30

I've no doubt that they players are lifted by fans vocal support but to actually blame poor match performances on the fans is silly.

Bazoo23 · 06/12/2013 20:35

Well I think I'll go with Steven Gerrards POV on this.
As hes actually been there...

You cant BLAME it on the fans. But a stadium full of panto booing if England are losing at half time wont exactly inspire the players.

Bazoo23 · 06/12/2013 20:36

ever heard the expression 12th man?
It exists for a reason.

dreamingbohemian · 06/12/2013 20:37

No. As an expat, I don't really feel bound to support any particular team. I picked the team I most liked the look of and stuck with it since then.

What a weird idea that everyone has to support their own national team or the team will suffer. Does that logic extend to the Premier League? Gosh, no wonder the Manchester teams have been doing so badly, what with half the city not supporting them...

dreamingbohemian · 06/12/2013 20:40

Well technically you just need about 80,000 fans then. Enough to fill a stadium. All the rest of us traitors can go off and support someone trendy.

Bazoo23 · 06/12/2013 20:42

It should extend to the premier league yes.
Your logic is frankly ridiculous.
Clearly not knowledgable about football so I wont be entering into a discussion with a glory supporter.
You support your local and national team not one you "like the look of" ffs....

NoComet · 06/12/2013 20:43

Yes, show jumping, skating (although I'm more in to figure than speed), ski ing of all types and gymnastics (even though DD2 records it and insists it's kept clogging up my disk).

Basically anything that isn't a team game involving groups of men and a ball. I don't get Football, Rugby or Cricket.

CalamitouslyWrong · 06/12/2013 20:44

All groups are the 'group of death' for Scotland! It makes no difference what other teams are in them. Grin

NoComet · 06/12/2013 20:45

Any way hopefully the stadiums won't be finished!

CalamitouslyWrong · 06/12/2013 20:47

(Note: I know Scotland didn't qualify. That's because all the qualifying groups were the group of death to them too.)

Doesn't make them less supported though.

And it means us scots can pick whatever team we like.

squoosh · 06/12/2013 20:52

I'm not English either so have no idea who I'll cheer for.
