Following on from the thread about the ghastly Katie Hopkins comments about Scotland after our awful tragedy last weekend.

So if you're a weegie (or just love Glasgow) pitch in.

I'm an adopted weegie, lived here during my teacher training, returned almost 9 years ago with my family.

I'm an East-Coaster, my dh is from Northern Ireland, our dc were born in the islands, speak Gaelic but are very much not-born-but-bred weegies.

I love the welcome, the people, the whole place!

What makes it your home?

I love Glasgow. The people are incredibly warm, remind me of liverpudlians.
It's got some great buildings, and eating out is a joySmile I dont get to visit enough.

Whistleblower0 · 04/12/2013 09:29

Agree about aberdeen,- sorry..

Mrscaindingle · 04/12/2013 09:39

I have always been proud to be a weegie even though I don't sound like one, was born here and left when very young and just returned two years ago and feel I have come full circle. I would not live anywhere else.

Agree with Whistleblower that Liverpool is very similar re grittiness and humour of its inhabitants. And only ever visited Aberdeen but I'm afraid it left me cold, sorry.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 04/12/2013 09:40

Hi Weegie - Nice thread Smile

I've only been to Glasgow once to visit a friend at Uni there. Her accommodation was at the top of a tower block and I was amazed how Glasgow seemed to stretch out forever and was so lively at night - I think she was quite central and Glasgow's pretty flat isn't it, so we could see for miles from up there.

My impression is you can be a really warm and kind hearted person without always showing it on first impression - my Grannie was a bit like that. We used to think she was a bit of a northerner as she grew up in Northumberland - but I suppose she'd be a southerner to you!

KateAdiesearrings · 04/12/2013 09:46

2Retts 'you can be a guest at an Edinburgh wedding or a Glasgow funeral...I know which would be more fun!'

^^ I love this quote.
I've lived in a few different cities over the years but always love coming home to Glasgow. It has amazing architecture, shopping, museums and people. I'm so proud to live here Smile

BumPotato · 04/12/2013 09:49

Well I love Glasgow and Aberdeen, we (DH, our DCs and I) split our time between the two. I've also managed to have fun in Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth.

You get the best nights out in Glasgow, however

samandi · 04/12/2013 11:00

Like most places, there are good points and bad :-)

ProfondoRosso · 04/12/2013 11:00

I like your Barras story, ssd!

My godfather, who's French, was working as a language assistant in the school where my mum taught in the 80s, and she and my dad took him to the Barras. There he saw a sign saying 'Home Made Sweets,' with a rather suspicious assortment of sweeties and an angry looking wee wifey smoking a fag. He asked her, "Do you have any that are not home made?" Grin

I used to go to the Barras before I started my Saturday job at Laura Ashley on Buchanan St when I was at school, to get knock off CDs. The merest whisper of police presence, and the pasting tables would be folded right up, with all the counterfeit merchandise inside, and the wee guys would run.

Nice video of Billy Connolly singing about Glasgow

ssd · 04/12/2013 16:18

I worked next door to Laura Ashley! was your manager called Phylllis?

ProfondoRosso · 04/12/2013 16:26

No way, ssd, what was there at the time? My manager was called Carol, and this was between 2002 and 2003. Smile

ssd · 04/12/2013 16:45

oh gosh no, am talking in the 90's!

amateurcynic · 04/12/2013 16:56

So homesick reading this! Have to agree with Annakin31 on the fab Glasgow curries too. Box of pakora after a night out anyone? Grin

squoosh · 04/12/2013 16:57

The best pakora in the world comes from the pakora shop on Woodlands Road. Mmmmmm mmmmmm.

carovioletfizz · 04/12/2013 16:57

I am here and proud. And KH is vile.

And please all come over to MN Local Glasgow and tell us here too! local.mumsnet.com/Talk/local_glasgow?call=NewConversationPage

(Shameless LE plug of her own site)

BakerStreetSaxRift · 04/12/2013 17:18

Has anyone had a curry at Akbar's on the west section of Sauchiehall Street and had one of those amazing naan breads that are so big and soft they hang them up???

Shock Smile Grin

Wonderful.

And yes tuna chicken pakora (from MacDonners in Finnieston) after a night out.

Man, I'm so hungry.

BakerStreetSaxRift · 04/12/2013 17:18

tuna Now that would be boak.

ProfondoRosso · 04/12/2013 18:16

Squoosh, would that be the legendary Balti Club? 2 mins from my house, I go there far too often! Grin

And Baker, Akhbar's is awesome! Those big naans are something else.

GoldenGytha · 04/12/2013 18:31

Leave my city alone you Aberdeen haters!

Brilliant place to live, Aberdonian born and bred and proud of it.

I've never been to Glasgow, but been to Edinburgh many times, in fact just back from a weekend there with my daughter, and had a great time.

GoldenGytha · 04/12/2013 18:35

And Aberdonians are the best people in the world,

Great shops, parks, restaurants, lovely beach, beautiful buildings, what's not to love?

I'm quite offended by anyone saying Aberdeen is a tip.

squoosh · 04/12/2013 18:40

Aberdeen is a striking city with lots of beautiful Victorian villas and parks, and it's obviously a wealthy town, but there's a weird contrast of that old Presbyterian vibe coupled with all the strip clubs and raucous off shore revellers.

I don't think it's a tip but it's too far North for me.

squoosh · 04/12/2013 18:41

I find it really odd that you've lived all your life in Scotland and never made it to Glasgow! Not having a dig but I feel as though I'm always ping ponging all over Scotland and I'm not even from here.

squoosh · 04/12/2013 18:41

Profondo Yes! That's the one, the mighty Balti Club. Deeeeee-licious.

ProfondoRosso · 04/12/2013 18:55

Squoosh, DH bought 100 pieces of pakora from Balti Club for his mum's 60th - though there were less than 100 by the time he got there! Grin

Golden, I've never been to Aberdeen but anywhere that invented the buttery must be good!

GoldenGytha · 04/12/2013 18:56

I've lived in Cheshire and The Lake District, and couldn't wait to come home both times.

Love Edinburgh, probably my favourite place after Aberdeen, but going to Glasgow just doesn't have the same appeal for me, sorry.

XH was English, and he, and all his family though Scotland began and ended at Glasgow which used to annoy me.
