Cheesy pasta bake with a hint if penicillin. Mmmmm, yummy ;)

hattymattie · 03/12/2013 18:35

My DH is French and eats tonnes of mouldy cheese (not the soft stuff though) - he's one of the most healthy people I know. Here everybody just cuts off the mould.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/12/2013 18:45

I used to do it and sell the cheese when I worked in the deli in Presto in the '80s. Have Never bought deli food since.

complexnumber · 03/12/2013 18:49

I hope it's ok, I just made DD2 a toasted cheese sarnie with cheese I had cut the mould off.

I suppose I have never quite shaken off student living habits

SquinkiesRule · 03/12/2013 18:52

I don't do it, mold grows in a cone shape, so you see the big part on the outside and it penetrates deeper than you can see, it's asking for upset tummies.

stealthsquiggle · 03/12/2013 18:55

Well I have been eating trimmed-of-mould cheese for 40+ years with no ill effects Confused

YummyDollie · 03/12/2013 22:43

We'll it didn't kill nor poison me im still here alive and well 27 hours later Wink hadn't thought to freeze cheese great tip!

It is alright to cut the mould of hard cheese because the mould doesn't penetrate that far into the cheese.

I wouldn't do it with most other food though as it usually penetrates far deeper than the visible bit. Some moulds produce carcinogens so don't assume that because you are alive 72 hours later it did no harm!

Caitlin17 · 03/12/2013 23:00

I not only scrape mould off cheese but also from jam, yogurt, cream, creme fraiche with no absolutely no consequences whatsoever.

I pay no attention to sell by/ use by dates as long as it looks ok and smells ok, it's fine.

Silvereyes · 03/12/2013 23:00

Do it all the time

I always do this with cheese, and I never get ill, can't remember the last time I had a bad stomach, in general if it smells and looks ok it's fine by me

cosikitty · 03/12/2013 23:04

When you buy cheese in blocks, the chances are the big block it came from was covered in mold and sliced off before packaging your piece. All that about mould penetrating deeper is crap! I used to work in a cheese packing plant!

ZenNudist · 03/12/2013 23:12

I do it. Some supermarket cheese gets mould in deep spots so I sort if gouge out these too. Just seems to be Aldi cheese that's bad for this.

I also love blue cheese. Mmmmm

HereIsMee · 03/12/2013 23:14

I was taught what PurpleRayne said. I tend to cut off the mouldy bits too. Whatever you do just don't look at it with a microscope before eating it.

QuinionsRainbow · 04/12/2013 10:53

Doesn't cheese taste better with a bit of blue mould on?

SlimJiminy · 04/12/2013 11:06

YANBU. I do this regularly. I also pick the mouldy bits of bread if there are just a few dots of it. Hasn't done me any harm either.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 04/12/2013 11:10

It's normal to cut mould off cheese. It's like taking eyes out of potatoes; fine so long as what remains looks and smells good.

Scholes34 · 04/12/2013 11:16

As long as it smells and tastes okay, then do it. I find Wensleydale starts to taste funny once mould has started to appear, so that gets chucked.

imalama · 04/12/2013 11:50

YANBU. But my DH does this too, so we are grots together! Grin

Topaz25 · 04/12/2013 14:04

YANBU. Stilton is basically just mouldy cheese and people eat that!

ProfPlumSpeaking · 04/12/2013 14:09

I used to do this until one day I happened to do it in front of a very senior police pathologist friend. He gave me a very stern telling off and said you can have no idea whether it is poisonous mould or harmless mould. That was jam, mind you, so I would go with Mayo clinic (above) on hard cheese and probably still risk it. I don't think people saying they did it and were fine is something to rely on. The ones who ate the nonmouldy parts and then dropped dead are not here to report Wink

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 04/12/2013 14:33

Always do this with cheese!
