to feel stabby when I see 'lol' in place of a full stop?

That's it, really. I've been seeing a lot of this on Mumsnet recently. There's something about 'lol' that just rubs me the wrong way. Use a full stop, and a smiley emoticon if it's funny FGS.

YADNBU.

Periwonkle · 03/12/2013 12:25

Yanbu. But Yabu to say "stabby" which I think is far more irritating. Also affected.

formerbabe · 03/12/2013 12:29

What does stabby mean? Sounds unpleasant and a bit sinister...

I am a hater of lol by the way!

flippingebay · 03/12/2013 12:32

I used to work for someone who thought lol was 'lots of love' and used it all the time. Until a colleague's Mum died, she emailed in and told 'said boss' who responded with sympathies and 'lol' at the end Shock

revivingshower · 03/12/2013 12:32

I think you are all a bit grumpy lol

Killinascullion · 03/12/2013 12:32

Haven't you ever got annoyed with DP or another and pretended to act out the Psycho scene complete with sound effects, lol?

I think writing 'feeling stabby' conveys this rather well.

Elderflowergranita · 03/12/2013 12:32

Stabby is worse.

Finola1step · 03/12/2013 12:32

Another lol hater here. But I also hate "stabby". I prefer "makes my teeth itch". Oh YADNBU.

NigellasLeftNostril · 03/12/2013 12:33

stabby stabby lolololololol

flipchart · 03/12/2013 12:33

I love 'lol'
Sometimes it's hard to see what angle a person is coming from when it is just words on a screen. 'Lol' gives direction that something is meant light hearted.

LucyBabs · 03/12/2013 12:34

Hate the word stabby Angry

I use a full stop after lol is that ok? LOL.

Xmas Wink
quirrelquarrel · 03/12/2013 12:34

forgot your [lighthearted] tag after 'stabby' OP ooh dear

DuckToWater · 03/12/2013 12:35

Depends on the medium. On here, in a text, online - anywhere where communication is informal, doesn't bother me.

In a solicitor's letter? No. LOL

HesterShaw · 03/12/2013 12:37

I feel stabby when I read the word stabby.

Oh wait...

Chopchopbusybusy · 03/12/2013 12:37

I think an occasional LOL is OK but as a replacement for punctuation it is very annoying. Not as annoying as basically used as a full stop. Yes, DH, you are the guilty party.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 03/12/2013 12:37

Flipping my dad does that - all texts and emails end 'LOL Daddy'. He will not be told otherwise...

HECTheHeraldAngelsSing · 03/12/2013 12:38

There are worse things that people can say, certainly. It doesn't so much annoy me as baffle me. Since it stands for Laugh Out Loud, it often makes no sense.

I am making a cup of tea. Laugh Out Loud.

I've had a hard day and I am tired. Laugh Out Loud.

My husband is an arse. Laugh Out Loud.

I mean, why 'lol' when the preceding sentence in no way lends itself to the idea of laughing out loud. It's not particularly funny. You surely aren't actually laughing, in fact, you probably aren't even cracking a smile.

So what does it mean? To the person doing it. What are they attempting to convey by beginning or ending a completely unfunny sentence with the phrase "laugh out loud"

I could understand it if the sentence was "did you hear the one about the bloke who walked into a bar..." but it never is.

Slightly overthinking it all, perhaps. Grin

HesterShaw · 03/12/2013 12:39

I'm friends with someone I know's MUM on FB, i.e a woman in her SIXTIES who puts lol after literally everything. Everything.

It's a nice day today, might do a BBQ lol
Christmas tree's up! lol
The dog got COVERED in mud today during her walk lol
Burnt the dinner this evening lol
My son wrapped his car round a tree this morning lol

And so on.

harticus · 03/12/2013 12:40

LOL, stabby, luffs, wine o'clock - all evil.

HesterShaw · 03/12/2013 12:41

"Makes my teeth itch" is the most evil by far.

miffybun73 · 03/12/2013 12:41

YANBU, but in my opinion "stabby" is as bad as "lol."

ElaClaw · 03/12/2013 12:44

I hate "makes my teeth itch" it makes me feel all stabby. Which btw I also hate - it makes my teeth itch lol

quirrelquarrel · 03/12/2013 12:45

reminds me of that joke where the mum thinks it stands for love you loads, and she texts something like 'granddad's taken a turn for the worse, LOL' to her daughter

is it evil to laugh at that

NigellasLeftNostril · 03/12/2013 12:46

LOL

flipchart · 03/12/2013 12:49

Lots of Lol's at that quirrel
