to feel stabby when I see 'lol' in place of a full stop?

That's it, really. I've been seeing a lot of this on Mumsnet recently. There's something about 'lol' that just rubs me the wrong way. Use a full stop, and a smiley emoticon if it's funny FGS.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if everybody were actually "Laughing Out Loud", when they say they were?

It would be bedlam.

YANBU. Don't people know it's illegal?

And as for 'makes my teeth itch' - that's even more illegal.

Fact.

Kipsy · 03/12/2013 12:50

Sorry, I had no idea that 'stabby' made people feel ... stabby! Blush
Killin understands; it conveys perfectly how I feel when I see gratuitous 'lol'ing. Irritated doesn't quite cut it somehow.

I really couldn't give a shit and I don't know why anyone else does.

I remember putting 'lol' on one of my very first posts here and some cheeky bitch (can't remember who) decided she had the right to tell me off for it Hmm

I 'lolled' every time I saw her on the same thread as me after that.

I think she name changed in the end Grin

Saw an amazing post on Facebook the other day which basically went:

I'm going out today with the kids lol and hopefully Hubby will but me something nice lol but I haven't been to town for ages lol so don't know where any of the good shops are lmfao. Where is your best shop lol?

Amazing.

HesterShaw · 03/12/2013 12:51

LOL at Worra stalking a MNer with her LOLing.

AmberLeaf · 03/12/2013 12:51

years ago I thought it stood for 'lots of laughter' Blush Grin Grin

rpitchfo · 03/12/2013 12:51

This irritation is as old as the internet. I don't know if you got the memo but "lol" won. Deal with it.

HesterShaw · 03/12/2013 12:52

Puppy, you should have written something like "You're right! That is TRULY HILARIOUS. Verily I am laughing out loud."

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 03/12/2013 12:52

LOLZ

sherbetpips · 03/12/2013 12:53

my mum and sister use it for lots of love. i have told my mum it is laugh out loud and that putting at the end of every single message she sends is a little strange......

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 03/12/2013 12:53

I think the 'z' adds certain je ne sais quoi.

WorraLiberty · 03/12/2013 12:55

LOL at Worra stalking a MNer with her LOLing.

At one point, I was going to tattoo the letter L on both arse cheeks and bend over Grin

BackOnlyBriefly · 03/12/2013 12:56

If I am laughing out loud - or at least laughing quietly I will use lol. There may be a smiley they will convey the same thing, but they are not the same in every place that I post so I have to look.

If someone complains I tell them to #### and ##### and probably ##### and then I add TWO lols

Grin
JohnnyBarthes · 03/12/2013 12:56

What rpitchfo said.

Lolol.

TheVermiciousGrinch · 03/12/2013 13:00

Worra, that really did make me laught out loud. Grin Actually, to be honest, it was a rather undignified snort.

quirrelquarrel · 03/12/2013 13:02

SOL

snort out loud

ElaClaw · 03/12/2013 13:05

When I first encountered "lol" on an american forum many many years ago, for some reason I thought it stood for "Lord O Lord" Grin

ShirakawaKaede · 04/12/2013 17:42

I used to think it meant "lots of love" and was mystified as to why people would say that to people on forums that they (presumably) didn't know in RL.

I really hate fml, by the way, but mostly for the way people use it, Eg. "I feel really ill fml" "Work tomorrow, fml" "Monday's coming fml"

I had to look up what it stood for (fuck my life) and thought, well we all feel crappy sometimes, we all know what it's like to do a job you hate and we all have Mondays, FGS!
