Selling some things on fleabay so far for a pair of shoes I've had the following questions.

Will these fit me?

I know it says UK only postage but will you post to me in Canada and if so can you amend your listing accordingly.

What size is a 39

How much do they sparkle in low light

Confused WTF is wrong with people???

To everyone, not just op...if you want to ebay deal with the questions. No one forces you to reply to messages so ignore them if you want, although personally I wouldn't.

Postage, measurement questions totally par for the course and I ask all the time.

Plenty of people will post internationally even if it says uk only.

Oh and that size large from 1998...it could now be a medium. If you want to sell clothes on the internet then yes be prepared to get asked about minute details.

Presumably those of you complaining all offer refunds as standard unlike most on ebay? Wink

chirpchirp · 30/11/2013 07:06

Stupid questions on EBay don't come close to the stupid questions I've had on gumtree.

When moving house and selling a bed - "hi, I really like this bed but I don't have any money, would you swap it for a computer monitor and a first generation game boy? The screen on the game boy is broken but you could probably fix it."

Selling a dinner set that I had photographed and listed every item of "is this going to fit in my cupboards?"

When selling tickets (at face value) for a comedy gig I could no longer attend - "is this the guy I saw at X club a couple of years ago?"

If I get questions about sizing or postage I always reply, however don't engage with the crazy.

GiveItYourBestFucker · 30/11/2013 07:09

I had a polite buyer ask, before bidding, if I'd post to Japan. No, but we agreed I'd post to his family in London. Everyone happy! Then I had a buy it now, the buyer paid and then asked me to send by the cheapest possible non-recorded post and refund the difference to him. No, I said. He gave me bad feedback for being "unhelpful on postage". Not how Buy It Now works, surely?

lljkk · 30/11/2013 10:49

At least they said please on the BIN question...

It's a bad sign when they don't read listing; it's a good sign that they ask questions (means they do want it).

It seems like A LOT of people sell women's clothing on Ebay, but that category notorious for being the worst thing to sell in terms of fussy buyers. Try to sell other stuff, especially not clothes, & your experience should improve.

MillyRules · 30/11/2013 16:46

I am a regular ebayer and get frustrated when sellers don't put all the details about an item and then I have to send emails asking for more information.
For instance when a dress is described as knee length rather than the exact length. Knee length depends upon your height. People want to know hem lengths.
Sizing depends upon different brands and also your body shape. Someone who is a size 16 on the top might be a 12 or 14 on the bottom or visa versa. So again measurements are needed.
Shoe sizes should be both continental and british sizing.
Colours need to be described and not omitted as the colours come out differently on different devises. Black can often look brown or blue etc.
Material composition needs to be specific not just described as a mix or in a lot of cases not described at all.
Is the item in perfect condition or used. If used explain a little more. Does it have bobbling or stains etc. Check the item.
And please wash the item. The amount of clothes that I have received that smell .....yuk.

Madmammy83 · 30/11/2013 16:53

I stopped selling, it made me murderous. I had a brand new Disney baby tracksuit that my son had gotten as a gift, tried on, and it didn't fit. Because it had been in a press for a few months, I washed it, and stated that on the listing. It was immaculate. The prick that bought it first sent me numerous "is it genuine" messages, to which I replied yes, then he wanted me to offer free postage, I said no, then he wanted me to end the auction early, I said no - another person was bidding against him and I was praying they'd win but he won it, I posted it, he messaged me saying he thought it had been worn more than once and he wanted a half refund, I said no, and he left me negative feedback saying the item had been worn as he could smell washing powder off it. A refund because something smelled clean....Angry

MillyRules · 30/11/2013 16:54

Mad theyre are definitely some arseholes out there aren't they!! Lol!!

Peacocklady · 30/11/2013 17:25

I sold 2 pairs recently, uk postage only, both bought by overseas buyers.
I duly amended and sent a new invoice with increased postage cost. One buyer then said she didn't want to pay if it said I'd only said uk. I pointed out I'd changed it and they were all ready to go. Also pointed out that uk sizes are different.
Have heard nothing since at all. Bloody waste of time. I started proceedings and I've relisted them so at least I don't have to pay fees.

makemineabacardi · 30/11/2013 17:37

I recently got neutral feedback from someone I'd sold a pair of new (size 4) shoes to. Her feedback said 'nice pair of shoes but a small size 4'. Confused how is it my fault that the manufacturer made them as a small size????

WhirlyByrd · 30/11/2013 17:47

I had someone bid on something then message me to say 'I'll pay X and we will pick it up on this day.' Er, don't think so, mate! It's an auction which you have bid on and you can feck off if you think you are going to dictate to me! He didn't win the item, thank fuck, even though he bid loads more than he was generously offering to pay. Hmm

Guttersnipe · 30/11/2013 17:54

Apart from the postage question, I never get asked anything. Sad I wish I did actually. It would be fun for a while replying.

My bugbear are the people who complain 2 weeks after I sent the item that they did not receive it. I just don't believe them but unfortunately sometimes you have no choice but to refund. Generally speaking, the entire site is weighted towards buyers and the occasional seller is being squeezed off the site by businesses.

Guttersnipe · 30/11/2013 17:59

By occasional seller I mean people who sell occasionally on ebay, not a small number of sellers.

Oh, that probably makes no more sense than the original post. Oh well, I know what I mean....

Grin
Snog · 30/11/2013 18:02

Wait til you have to refund them for some spurious reason
YANBU OP - ebay doesn't want private sellers like you anymore is the reality

Rooners · 30/11/2013 18:10

I sold a jacket last year. I think I put measurements - not sure - but anyway I got a message saying it didn't fit as the arms were too short.

Hmm

It was a standard issue jacket by a reputable brand

I sent back one saying that her arms were just unusually long, perhaps.

She was sweet and decided to sell it on but never did afaik. It's probably still in her cupboard with every other standard sleeve length thing she has ever bought. Sad

poor gibbon-like lady

Rooners · 30/11/2013 18:11

Oh and the handbag described as having only a pair of tote handles, and not a shoulder strap = complaint that there was no shoulder strap, and come on, the photo was taken on a patterned carpet so she couldn't be sure whether to believe the description or not.

She was an ARSE. I had to give her a fiver back to shut her up.

MillyRules · 30/11/2013 18:13

Snog why does ebay not want private sellers?

teacherandguideleader · 30/11/2013 18:20

I had a seller email me a few weeks back to ask if my item was black or orange - the listing said black, the title said black, the picture showed a black item. Just weird. I could have understood if it had been black and brown. Oh and the person who asked what shade of black something was (I thought there was only one shade of black - anything lighter would be grey!).

I imagine the profit they make from occasional sellers is minimal compared to the big businesses, but probably cause relatively more problems in terms of items not being sent / received / not as described etc.

Meglet · 30/11/2013 18:27

Grin at 'gibbon like lady'.

Madmammy83 · 30/11/2013 18:28

More eBay stories:

The woman I sold a dress to - cost me £90, she got it for £41 ex P&P - and said she never got it. She went on & on about it for weeks, I asked her to check her post office, she refused, so I refused to refund her, she opened a dispute, I googled her (as you do) - and saw her in one of her (public) facebook pictures WEARING the fucking dress. I screengrabbed it, e-mailed it to her and she closed the dispute, never heard another word from her.

Or the man who wanted to bid on one of my items and asked for postage to somewhere in Africa after I said Ireland & UK only. I blocked him from bidding and he sent me a tirade of abuse through messages calling me every name under the sun and telling me God would punish me.

Or the man who bought a CD from me and then e-mailed me three times telling me I had lovely handwriting and how much he'd love to come to Ireland and was I far from Dublin.

Or the man out in India my husband bought a watch off, it didn't arrive after a month, I messaged him, he had "left it in for repair", I requested immediate refund, he refused, I threatened a dispute, he refused to refund, I opened one, he only bloody went and requested my contact details off eBay and RANG ME - offered me £3 Iyes, three quid) to close the dispute, I left immediate negative feedback, he instantly refunded and got my feedback wiped so he was back up to 100%.

It's really not worth the hassle.

MillyRules · 30/11/2013 18:31

teacher strange person indeed!!
But there are a few shades of black. Lol!.

NorbertDentressangle · 30/11/2013 18:42

Even if you put lots of measurements in your listing it still doesn't stop the numpties.

I listed a skirt and included waist and length measurements as well as the size. The buyer then emailed saying that she wanted to return it for a refund as it was a small size 12 and therefore not as listed.

I pointed out (politely, whilst biting my tongue) that the measurements were in the listing so it was exactly as listed. Didn't hear from her again but received +ve feedback.

wetaugust · 30/11/2013 18:52

I don't bother with it any more.

DS wanted a car radio. When it arrived you could see the marks on the casing where it had been jemmied out of the last car! Nivked - probably! Seller returned the money and asked for positive feedback!!!

Bought a small china collectible. It was cracked so I sent it bcak and asked for a refund. They sent me a cheque for the refund - which bounced! I asked again for a refud and got a sob story about them being too poor to refund the money and could I wait a few months. Finally got a refund after threatening them with court action, only to find they'd resold the cracked china collectible before refunding me (so it was still technically my property!).

What finished me off was that I sold 3 pairs of quite expensive shoes. Packaged them all in the same way and posted them all on the same day at the same Post Office.

A fortnight later I had a phone call from one buyer - the shoes had not arrived. Could I send her another pair please! Told her I was not a retailer and didn;t have any more shoes but what I really wanted to know was how on earth she'd got my phone number as I'm ex-directory. She said that Paypal had given it to her!

Stuoid trusting old me had sent the shoes by normal delivery so did not have evidence of posting/deliver. So I had to refund her and was out of pocket for the postage too.

Never felt happy about that transaction has she was a recently joined buyer and never bought anything again after that.

Now I just give the stuff to charity shops.

WholeNutt · 30/11/2013 18:56

These are so very funny!

OP posts:
carlywurly · 30/11/2013 19:50

I had a woman message me after paying a stupid amount for a used white coat that was very clearly described as such. She asked me to give her a partial refund of 75% as she didn't feel it was worth what she paid. She threatened bad feedback if I didn't.

Ebay were great - got straight on to the case - apparently it's feedback extortion and I never heard from her again.

BigFatGoalie · 30/11/2013 19:54

Listed a ladie's top once and was email by a man telling me he was happy to buy the item from me....

If I'd send him all of my old underwear too. I didn't even have to bother washing it, he said... Confused
