to write to dd's school and ask them to look for her PE shorts??

Which she lost after 3 weeks of term. She had worn them twice, they were labelled, they had only been in her locker then in the PE changing room. Another girl must have them. AIBU to write to the PE teacher and ask her to ask the girls to check their shorts?? I really don't want to have to buy another pair....

DD has just turned 10 and has just started middle school, btw. She has checked the PE lost property and general school lost property.

Thanks!!

You can but I doubt anyone would take any interest - my DS lost his brand new rugby top at school & my DH went in and looked through the lost property himself (with school's permission) - is this an option for you?

Otherwise it is just one of those things I am afraid, I buy lots of 'spare' kit from charity shops so that if good stuff is lost then my DS still has something to wear.

In all honesty it is your child's responsibility to look after their own clothes and keep a close eye on them when changing etc.

CocktailQueen · 29/11/2013 16:43

Thanks. These are school shorts so need to buy them from official shop. Chuh. I know dd should have looked after her stuff.

I lost over £150 worth of kit (inc 3 coats, 5 jumpers and a full PE kit)...

The school didn't give a flying cock about it - not their issue apparently.

(Son has ASD and was 7 at the time so no was not capable of keeping track of stuff).

sooperdooper · 29/11/2013 16:51

You'd be better telling your DD to keep a track of it tbh, the school can't be responsible for every item of clothing the kids have

Rufus44 · 29/11/2013 16:54

My junior school children had labeled clothes in a labeled bag on a labeled peg, both children had an entire bag go missing.

Not their error, someone took it. Luckily we have spares

Rufus44 · 29/11/2013 16:55

But yes YABU

Shonajoy · 29/11/2013 16:55

I wouldn't write, just go in. I had to look myself through lost property, you'll get nowhere if you write.

Hello op. Annoying isn't it? Has she looked in the changing rooms. It seems that there's usually a tide ark of discarded kit around the edges of the room when DD2 has to all too frequently search for missing kit

VerySmallSqueak · 29/11/2013 17:00

I have lost some things for good.
If they are expensive items and correctly labelled, then I would send my DD's in with the most similar thing they have in their wardrobe as a replacement.

If it's not quite right, then so be it.

I have to say that any stuff that should be bought from an expensive school supplier, gets replaced with a cheaper supermarket alternative in the first place.I've never been challenged on it.

judgejudithjudy · 29/11/2013 17:01

yabu the school has better things to do & your dd is 10 so not a baby.

VerySmallSqueak · 29/11/2013 17:02

Also, remember kids don't actually think to pick up other things and look underneath.

Damnautocorrect · 29/11/2013 17:05

I can beat that my ds lost his pe top on week one of reception. I hoped it would turn up after half term. Nope. Haven't bought him a new one yet, must get round to it! But yabu it's not schools job.

Dayshiftdoris · 29/11/2013 17:06

I can talk about a school not caring Euphemia because his stuff was labelled (in multiple places) and on one occasion I actually got a call from a parent as her son was given a pair of my son's spare underwear out of his bag by a member of staff when he had an accident.

I didn't mind but no one had informed me and when I checked his bag 2 pairs of underwear were gone, none had come home on my child... The staff shrugged when I mentioned it - I actually donated new undies to the school office!

Current school do care, they support him to look after his stuff and when things have gone missing they turn up with a message from a parent & washed & ironed... The school regularly ask we check our labels to make sure no 'mistakes' have happened and the children are praised when they return items...

It's simple and it works

havingastress · 29/11/2013 17:08

Good luck with that one.

Your child is old enough to have looked after the item in the first place. Not the teacher's job. I'd go and check the lost property myself. If she's capable of losing them, she's probably capable of not looking for them properly either!

Fairenuff · 29/11/2013 17:16

YABU.

To you this is just one child and one pair of shorts, but in reality there is barely a child who hasn't misplaced some piece of pe kit. Staff cannot be checking up all the time

Teach your dd how to look after her belongings more carefully.

HowManyDaysUntilChristmas · 29/11/2013 17:20

hen we've checked the classroom (where we change), the PE bags of other children who sit near child with missing item during the next PE session (in case it as been scooped up by them by accident) and sent the child to look in the lost property box there is little more I, as a teacher, can do.
You want the teacher to look for it, but if it is not in their PE bag or lost property what do you want them to do? It is frustrating loosing kit, but I can't spend the evening scouring the whole building.

I think it's the child checking the lost property that's the weak link!

DD2 checked hers. When I then checked,5 out of the 7 items in there were hers - all clearly labelled.......

Definitely the way forward,to check yourself,if you can.

tiredteacherxmassoon · 29/11/2013 17:28

Can't you go and look with her after school one day? As previous poster said the teacher can't look after hundreds of items of clothes. If you had 30 children in your house every Monday to Friday things would go missing too.

ILoveRacnoss · 29/11/2013 17:36

I'm imagining another AIBU thread...

DD came home today and said that her PE lesson started late because the teacher insisted that they all check their bags for someone's lost tee shirt. How DARE that teacher blanket accuse the class and my DD like that! They are there to teach not to search for lost property...

No?

redexpat · 29/11/2013 18:37

Can your DD not ask everyone to check the next time they are all getting changed for PE?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 29/11/2013 18:45

You could write but they might do what DS's school did, send an email round everyone asking them to check which apparently wasn't quire what the Mother concerned intended and DH overheard her yesterday proclaiming her embarrassment over it.

My friend's DS has made her promise never ever to do that to him. I have a stash of plain t shirts/shorts/sports socks/spare tie hand downs in my cupboard which takes the pain out of the missing PE kit scenario which inevitably happens.

CerealKillerMom · 29/11/2013 19:39

I think there should be a 'luck dip' bin in the changing room and all the kids dip in for their pe kit. Then once a week one parent (rota) takes them all home to wash and bring back.
