That my doctor should of told me of sides effects

After months of shoulder pain today I had a steroid injection. Now my head is pounding with an unbelievable headache. The doctor did it quickly and ushered me out of his room. It was not expected as I thought he would just give me more painkillers today.
Aibu that he should of mentioned possible side effects having the shot?

maybe it isnt a side effect though ? or have you looked it up

Sirzy · 27/11/2013 15:38

It might not be a side effect, and I think its quite unrealistic to expect them to list every possible side effect - most drugs have quite a long list of them!

NCISaddict · 27/11/2013 15:39

Is a headache a side effect of the injection or could it be coincidence?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 27/11/2013 15:41

Shoulder, upper spine and neck pain can often lead to headaches all by themselves. If you're in great pain you can always call your GP

bongobaby · 27/11/2013 15:50

I don't really suffer from headaches unless have had a night out on the vino. This one is nurophen proof at the moment.
My shoulder is throbbing. With painkillers you can read the leaflet that comes in the box explaining side effects but with an injection maybe the doctor could of explained that maybe this could happen.

Yes, but do you 'know' that the steroid injection has the side-effect of headaches? Have you read it anywhere online? You're assuming it is the injection but it could be a complete coincidence.

notimetotidy · 27/11/2013 15:53

He/she should have told you to take some anti-inflammatories and strong painkillers like co-codamol and also completely rest it for a couple of days. That's what mine did.

summertimeandthelivingiseasy · 27/11/2013 15:54

YANBU. A friend of mine had this recently and knew all about possible effects before she had it. They should have at least given you an information leaflet to take home with you.

bongobaby · 27/11/2013 15:57

Summertime can I ask how your friend knew about the possible side effects before she had it? I had no idea beforehand that my doctor was going to give me this injection today at my appointment.

I have had a number of steroid injections. They are fab-u-lus, darling. I would have one all the time, if I could.
No one ever told me that a side effect was a headache. I have never had a headache from one.
Have you actually looked it up yet? Does it list it as a side effect?

Phone up your doctor and ask for advice.

cate16 · 27/11/2013 16:16

I had one last week(shoulder), wasn't expecting it. I was told of some of the possible side effects- including 'so much pain later that day/night I might want to find the perpetrator and hit her'....... her words not mine :) . She was referring to the side effects pain.
I was also given the leaflet from the injection itself which gave all the information + a general steroid handout.
Anyway, turns out as Oblomov said- the best thin ev-var :)

op 'should HAVE' rather than should OF hth all the best

"Summertime can I ask how your friend knew about the possible side effects before she had it? I had no idea beforehand that my doctor was going to give me this injection today at my appointment."

She had seen her GP several times, as it was an ongoing thing. I assume the GP explained, or she saw someone before it was done. She definitely knew she was going to have it done, and had someone to drive her there and back.

bongobaby · 27/11/2013 16:36

Shakerattle I didn't post here for a grammar lesson from you
Cate16 thank you, I thought that the doctor should of at least told me or like you given a leaflet.

NHS page on side effects of steroids

Headache isn't listed as one of them.

meditrina · 27/11/2013 16:42

Though I do agree that side effects need to be discussed before treatment. It's hardly informed consent if they're not.

NewtRipley · 27/11/2013 16:45

How do you know it's a side effect?

If is is a known side-effect he could have told you

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 27/11/2013 16:54

If u have a headache why are u online sat at a screen? Won't that just exacerbate it...?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/11/2013 16:57

I love steroid shots but never seem to get warned of side effects. Last one was in the bum. Quick jab and I was out of the door Confused
Still, it was bloody good.

Jakebullet · 27/11/2013 17:02

Your headache has nothing to do with your steroid jab. There are some side effects but a headache isn't one if them.

LessMissAbs · 27/11/2013 17:08

If you are online, could you not have looked up possible treatments and their side effects in the months preceding this that you have been suffering from shoulder pain?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/11/2013 18:30

It is possible that one of the muscles in your shoulder/neck spasmed after the shot leading to a headache.

flyingbebe · 27/11/2013 19:53

The trouble is that with a lot of drugs there are many side effects. Looking at corticosteroids, there are tens of possible side effects. Even things like paracetamol have a long list of side effects because every single side effect experienced in the drug trial has to be reported. It's why hiccups is listed under side effects in some drugs.

Yes, the doctor should have warned you about some of the most common side effects but they couldn't have listed all of them.
