To be annoyed neither of my kids look like me or my side of the family

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:17

When I look at my children 3 and 12 months I see my dp and his mum in my son and dp dad in my daughter. I find it really strange, almost like they are more his than mine. It bothers me..
Let's discuss

WorraLiberty · 26/11/2013 22:19

Oh I was going to post quite a sensible and perhaps helpful answer

Then I saw the 'Let's discuss'

Think I'll give it a miss...

SantanaLopez · 26/11/2013 22:21

Jeremy Kyle seems a nice helpful chap who knows about these sorts of situations.

MisForMumNotMaid · 26/11/2013 22:22

Its natural for children to look more like their father when they're very young. DD is just three. Everyone says isn't she like DH! As she's getting older and her features are developing I think I can see bits of my side of the family.

Theres still so much baby chub at this tender age. Have you got any baby photos of yourself you could compare to photos of your DC? You may see more similarities that way.

MollyMatey · 26/11/2013 22:23

Mine don't either and I am dark and DP is fair! I thought my genes were supposed to be the dominant ones...

webwiz · 26/11/2013 22:23

Meh DS looks so much like DH that we have pictures of them side by side at the same age and they are freakily alike I can't say it bothers me.

Your's are only little OP they change as they grow.

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:24

You wrote all of that for what reason???

OP posts:
heidihole · 26/11/2013 22:24

I don't want to discuss that - I don't know any of you! I'll have to take your word for it in the absence of photos.

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/11/2013 22:24

Don't worry - kids change! My daughter started out a spitting image of her Dad, but now she's morphed into me - lucky girl!

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:28

I feel like my whole side of the family have been cheated somehow. I even thought if I have another maybe that 1 will look like us lol

OP posts:
gertrudetrain · 26/11/2013 22:29

I have this and it pisses me off. 3 dc's , 2 dads (modern) and none of them have any of my features. I went to hell in all 3 pregnancy and it annoys me I don't get to see a glimpse of myself. DD looks so much like MIL and MIL loves reminding me that she's so much a 'surname', we have the best genes. Hmm

IABU too.

nicelyneurotic · 26/11/2013 22:29

It can change as they get older. This would annoy me too though.

Also, I thought that baby girls receive almost no genes from their paternal grandfather.

I think it's because they get the Dad's X chromosome (from his mother) but no Y, which is passed down the paternal line only.

Google why paternal grandmothers favour their grand daughters for a proper explanation.

This might make you feel a bit better about DD looking like FIL.

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:30

Ha ha I'm glad it's not just me, just wasn't in my little bubble life plan x

OP posts:
foreverondiet · 26/11/2013 22:32

My three kids look like Dh. I guess it's lucky dh and I happily married! Yabu to post here!

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:32

Can I just add my what reason post was for the person who wrote a post saying that they were no longer going to write a post :-)

OP posts:
PPaka · 26/11/2013 22:33

Ds looks like me and my family, and I like that
So I suppose it would bother me if he didnt
NN- is that true?
My son and niece look similar and both look like their grandad, as do me and my brother?

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/11/2013 22:35

I have dark hair and dark eyes, my DC have fair hair and green and blue eyes. Tis nature, they look like their dad.

WorraLiberty · 26/11/2013 22:35

Sorry I came across as narky OP Blush

It's just being told to 'discuss' reminds me of my old Headmistress and makes me want to drop kick small kittens into a lake.

Not your problem though

justalilmummy · 26/11/2013 22:37

It's annoying I do all the hard work and they all come out looking like their dad!

gertrudetrain · 26/11/2013 22:39

forever really don't get what your dc's looking like your DH has got to do with you being happily married? Or why this op shouldn't post in AIBU? It bothers her..is she UR? Surely that belongs to AIBU?

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:39

No probs worra :-)

OP posts:
Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:40

Agreed

OP posts:
nicelyneurotic · 26/11/2013 22:44

Hi Ppaka - I read some articles online about it and assumed it was true (I like to think it is) but I have no idea if the source was credible. It only relates to the paternal granddad as the maternal granddad would have passed on an X chromosome to you and you an X to either son or daughter. Two X's share genetic material more easily than an X or Y.

Perhaps someone scientific can confirm? Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

shugfish · 26/11/2013 22:47

What about the other 25 chromosomes?

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/11/2013 22:47

Is it also true that baldness is mainly from the mothers side so if her dad is bald it's likely her son will be aswel???

OP posts:
ThenSheSaid · 26/11/2013 22:54

YANBU
I have the same problem. Not only do my DCs not look like me but they have a different accent Confused. The only advantage is that I can deny being their Mum and pretend to be their nanny instead. Smile
