..not to buy DS anything for Xmas

GuernseyTeddy · 25/11/2013 17:20

He's 14 weeks old, will be 18 weeks come Xmas day. We're skint. He has everything he needs. We live in a really small house and need to limit our tat quota. He'll be getting plenty from family no doubt.

So WIBU not to buy him anything 'for Christmas'.

My son was the same age when it was his first Christmas. I didn't buy him anything either - I just stuck a little Santa hat on him for a photo & that was it.

He won't miss out on anything, won't even be aware. Spend any left over pennies on you. Having a 14 week old is hard work, you deserve a treat,

coldwater1 · 25/11/2013 18:27

I am being induced this week so will have a 3 week old at christmas, i have got her an outfit, 1st christmas bib, 1st christmas teddy and a soft rattle thing.

mysteryfairy · 25/11/2013 18:30

Is he your only child? You must get him a token if there are any small children - siblings, nieces and nephews etc - who might think he's been forgotten.

DziezkoDisco · 25/11/2013 18:30

We never bought the babies anyhting, but when they got a bit older just wrapped up their own toys, the loved opening them!

Squitten · 25/11/2013 18:31

Our two boys are Sept & Dec babies so were very young on their first Xmas. We never got them anything - we have enough family who buy for them as it is. They seem unscathed so far!

DD is 2wks old - she won't get anything from us this year either

Rufus44 · 25/11/2013 18:32

Just a my first Christmas bauble for the tree would be nice, like you say he doesn't really need anything else

teenagetantrums · 25/11/2013 18:35

no DD was born in October she didn't get anything for her first Christmas (well from us, she got stuff from her grandparents)and she didn't care at all.

AnitaManeater · 25/11/2013 18:39

YANBU but you may have to keep the pretence up for other siblings. I did a stocking for my 9 week old and filled it with a packet of new muslins, dummies, metanium cream and a Xmas babygrow

littlewhitebag · 25/11/2013 18:44

You might want to buy him something like a bauble or special soft toy so when he asks you in years to come what he got for his first Christmas you can tell him honestly and produce a picture. Our DD1 was 6 weeks at Christmas and we have adorable pictures of her with a lovely polar bear soft toy. She is 21 now and still has it.

Divinity · 25/11/2013 18:46

Get the biggest cardboard box you can find, stick a balloon in and wrap it up. Then film his face when he sees the balloon rising from the box.

He will love the balloon then love the cardboard box. Job done. Wink

waikikamookau · 25/11/2013 18:51

my ds was 6 weeks at christmas, he got a cot toy, and other stuff.

FixItUpChappie · 25/11/2013 18:51

Well certainly he will have no idea either way.

You don't want to though? You don't want to get him a little something for you own entertainment and to mark his first Christmas as well as your first one as parents? Horses for courses and all that I guess

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 25/11/2013 18:53

YANBU. DD was six days old on Christmas Day. We did buy her christmas pjs for christmas eve though (and I read her The Night Before Christmas. Precious? Me?!)

My DM made me 'wake her up so she can see you open her presents' and I was Angry she cant even see past her nose!

NoComet · 25/11/2013 18:55

DD2 has an incredibly naff first Christmas bauble, it has had to go on the tree for the last 12 years.

waikikamookau · 25/11/2013 18:57

is there nothign at all he needs? item of clothing? a rattle? a christmas bib?

SomethingkindaOod · 25/11/2013 18:58

starballbunny all 3 of mine have a got a first Christmas bauble Grin and yes, even DS who is now a strapping 13 year old permanently embarrassed by his family still insists that the bauble goes on!
OP YANBtotallyU about toys etc but an ornament of some description really does tend to mean something to them in later years.

SaucyJack · 25/11/2013 19:01

I'd get him a cheap toy that you can unwrap with him for photos.

willowstar · 25/11/2013 19:03

I didn't buy my daughter anything her first Christmas as she was 3 months old...but we don't do much for Christmas anyway in our family. Don't think she got much from anyone else either. Family are making a bit more of an effort now she is a bit older and now she is 4 we do get her and her little brother a fair few presents.

ShatnersBassoon · 25/11/2013 19:07

One of mine was a newborn at Christmas. I bought him a Santa wrist rattle. It was cute, cost about £2 and made me feel like I'd got him something.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 25/11/2013 19:09

Maybe a baby's first Xmas teddy/bib/sleepsuit or something... But other than that, yanbu!

What's the point in buying clothes in the next size up that you'd be buying anyway? Why not just buy them when they're needed?

I wish I knew if my baby was going to be here before Christmas as I'd LOVE to buy a teeny tiny my first Christmas outfit Grin (due 20th dec!)

GuernseyTeddy · 25/11/2013 19:23

DSD has bought him a 'My first Christmas Top' and I was planning to to use a shirt/waistcoat/tie outfit my dad bought him as a newborn for his Christmas Day outfit. My aunt has bought him a JL Christmas bib. As I said we've got a lot of generous family.

Not being a Christmas grinch ...really gone to town on the advent box treats, pressies for DSD etc.

Might do the bauble thing though. Like the idea of making up a box for him for when he gets married/big life event with little notes and special trinkets from his life.

YANBU, we never get ours anything when they are babies. if I could get away with that for another 18 years that would be great.

honeybunny14 · 25/11/2013 19:31

I would get dc even a little thing with it being his 1st xmas
