To warm a bottle of baby's milk due to the possibility of scalding myself when I've just purchased a boiling hot cup of coffee???

Yanbu that is annoying. I know most places won't heat a bottle for you in the microwave etc, but I was never refused a jug of hot water to warm it myself.

killpeppa · 25/11/2013 14:04

thats a piss take.
Order a cheap tea & stick it in that.

SunnySon · 25/11/2013 14:05

I hate this, it's happened quite a few times to me. I've been told either a) It's a health and safety issue in case you scald yourself (when, as you pointed out, I've just bought a mug of boiling tea) or b) it's against policy in case you have your own tea bags with you. I've offered to stand at the counter so they can watch me but I've been refused in 4 or 5 different places.

cloggal · 25/11/2013 14:05

YANBU when you've nought something, not great service. I hope you let them know you won't be back.

Poloholo · 25/11/2013 14:07

Yanbu

killpeppa · 25/11/2013 14:08

go to m&s cafe. They give you a bottle warmer-for future reference.

Didiandb · 25/11/2013 14:09

I've had this happen in prezzo a couple of times. It's such a stupid rule!i had to stand at the bar like a loner while they heated the bottle in a jug in front of me!

Tommee Tippee do a brilliant flask/bottle holder think it's about £10 it was the best thing I bought when I had DD. Means you always have hot water with you.

purplemonstermunch · 25/11/2013 14:09

FFS YANBU - it's asinine.

SashaOfSiberia · 25/11/2013 14:09

yanbu but don't tell them what its for. My good friend has digestive issues and often just orders a jug of hot water (she uses her own special tea bags or something).

Just order it and use it as you please.

SaucyJack · 25/11/2013 14:11

YANBU. Next time ask for the hot water before handing money over, then vote with your feet if they say no.

MrsGarlic · 25/11/2013 14:25

YANBU! I've worked at a cafe, it was a university one so I never was asked this myself but I would have said yes to you, or offered to warm the bottle myself in one of the milk jugs (easier than using a coffee cup I'd have thought).

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 25/11/2013 14:29

YANBU, I've never known that be refused.

I used to work in a council-run cafe and we had the same rule. We would always stand the bottle in a jug of water behind the counter, although I suppose that would leave you open to being sued if the bottle was too hot and the baby got burned.

MackerelOfFact · 25/11/2013 14:55

People used to ask me for a bowl of hot water to warm bottles when I was a waitress. We did provide it, but customers weren't allowed to take it back to their table, they had to leave it with us behind the counter.

It is a H&S thing. I guess if you start providing the 'service' of supplying hot water to heat bottles, you therefore become implicit if there's an accident? I don't know, but it's fairly common and it's not because the shop are trying to inconvenience you.

MackerelOfFact · 25/11/2013 14:56

Ha, x-post!

Paintingrainbowskies · 25/11/2013 15:00

It really annoys me, I have ordered a black coffee but they wouldn't give me boiling water to heat a bottle of expressed milk in pret a manger.

Next time I just asked for a mug of boiling water and didn't say what it was for.

CaptainTripps · 25/11/2013 15:16

I kind of don't blame them in this 'lack of common sense blame culture' we live in now!

Foxeym · 25/11/2013 15:17

Well I'm glad it's not just me then! The weird thing is I've been to 2 different branches of the same coffee shop and in one was given a jug of water no problem and then today in a different branch it was refused so obviously not a company rule??? Think I'll give M&S a try next time DS needs feeding, thanks for the info on that!

I used to work in a cafe and found we had so many problems with this. We used to give hot water if it was asked for no problem but we had so many mums complain we had given them too much, why couldn't they use our microwave, that they wanted a milk jug rather than a mug ( we couldn't give out the jugs as we needed them to steam milk) it went on and on. In the end after one 17 year old girl being reduced to tears by a mum shouting at her for giving boiling water that was too hot (?!?!) we said no to everyone after that.

So YANBU it is annoying but in some cases it's more trouble than it's worth.

Lollypop1983 · 25/11/2013 15:35

The company that I work for got sued by someone who spilt boiling water over themselves, after they asked for it go warm a baby's bottle. We're not allowed to give out boiling water for this reason.

FreeWee · 25/11/2013 15:39

Agree with M&S and their bottle warmers being awesome customer service. Problem is so many mums know about it there's never enough high chairs Smile I've never been refused but I've heard about it because people think you're making your own tea. I ask for a tiny amount of hot water to mix into DD's food to reheat and I always get a teapot full so have just been lucky. YANBU to be a bit peeved but it's their right to refuse and yes to voting with your feet.

jammiedonut · 25/11/2013 16:03

Yanbu, it's very annoying, in my restaurant we always gave out hot water. I just trained ds to drinkmilk at room temperature, or even cold to avoid the issue when out and about.

arethereanyleftatall · 25/11/2013 16:22

Yanbu, but one of the best bits of advice I ever got was to never warm milk for your baby, so I didn't, they never knew it existed, and thus I never had this problem.
