This stopping smoking lark is hard

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 23/11/2013 22:22

I'm eating the nicotine cravings! I'm at the bottom of a Pringle tube, I have a back up tube.

I have half a bar (large bar) of milkybar waiting which I know I will eat.

I really just want a cig. The fact alcohol is been enjoyed means the cig craving is more than usual.

I went cold turkey before and I put on half a stone! I caved after a night out. I have now, the past week gone cold turkey.

Can I replace food with something? I have a pen which I hold like a cig so I have the feeling Grin

I know I have 2 cigs in the house and I haven't cracked yet but I am getting there

YANBU. I had to keep my hands busy so I cleaned everything DH had to hold me back from bleaching the pavement

Sometimes I follow smokers trying to passively inhale their chemicals from them.

32flavours · 23/11/2013 22:34

Well done for quitting. Have you considered trying an e-cig? I've not smoked for 7 months thanks to mine.

Lottapianos · 23/11/2013 22:36

YANBU - it's bloody hard. You have to really want to do it. I stopped in May, I was so sick of it and had been cutting down for years. What worked for me was Niquitin Minis, an e fag and just feeling much healthier without the fags. Good luck, its worth it!

KungFuBustle · 23/11/2013 22:37

Cold turkey is immense so well done firstly!

I'm a week into vaping after trying for years. You're a week in, how awesome does your chest feel?! My teeth feel so nice too. I downloaded the Stop Smoking or Die trying app for free. It tells me all the money I saved, health benefits.

If you need to eat, eat. A few pounds is better than cigarettes. Good luck.

HerrenaHarridan · 23/11/2013 22:39

What worked for the was getting swine flu and then ttc!

Do you know any ill people who could make your throat too painful to smoke.

Also switch Pringles for fruit!

pianodoodle · 23/11/2013 22:44

Have a look in the mirror I swear my eyes looked brighter after only a couple of days :)

I didn't just stop though I used the Allen Carr books...and patches...and inhalers - even though the book tells you not to Grin

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 23/11/2013 22:45

I had tonsillitis which helped in Sept.

The Pringles have gone. I don't even know why I'm eating. I have no appetite when I smoke.

I deep cleaned downstairs this week and found the alcohol I'm drinking now Grin

The spray is the only thing that worked for me. It makes your gums bleed but you're scared to smoke after a blast Grin

gamerchick · 23/11/2013 22:49

Good luck.

gamerchick · 23/11/2013 22:50

Good luck.

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 23/11/2013 22:52

What spray?

RustyHalo · 23/11/2013 22:54

Well done for getting through the first week! It is so hard but you are already over the worst so keep going.
Chew gum to stop you snacking and try and keep off alcohol for a while as it reduces your willpower.
You'll start feeling all the great benefits soon - more cash, better sense of smell, better health, more energy etc.
Write down all your reasons for quitting & read the list every time you get a craving. Good Luck!

Shellywelly1973 · 23/11/2013 22:57

I gave up almost 10 month's ago. I used patches.

Well done for getting this far-you know you can do it!

LeaveIt · 23/11/2013 22:59

You can do it...keep going? Have you tried things like brushing your teeth and going to bed early? Keep strong.

squoosh · 23/11/2013 22:59

Read the Allen Carr book. Makes stopping smoking a walk in the park. The NHS should give copies away for free.

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 23/11/2013 23:07

This is my third attempt now. Its the weight gain I can't deal with as I'm so short its very noticeable Grin

I have come to bed.

CuppaTeaForTheBigFella · 23/11/2013 23:12

I'm currently puffing away on my e-cig Grin
I've given up cold turkey before, and it's bloody hard. But back then I really really wanted to give up, so I was very determined, but caved in after a night out drinking 10 months later and I was gutted.
I enjoy a fag, but I just can't afford to smoke and I hate stinking of it! I found grapes good to snack on, or satsumas. I also made my own ice lollies from fruit juices which were good as they take a while to eat.
Sounds silly, but cleaning your teeth regularly during the day and chewing sugar free mint gum will help as you'll want to keep your breath fresh.
You are doing really well, I always found days 5-10 the hardest. It gets easier after that. Good luck!

VerySmallSqueak · 23/11/2013 23:14

If you hang on in there,I think any weight gain won't be long term if you stay aware of it.

It's better to give up smoking, and put on half a stone that you can then lose when you've adjusted to non smoking, than carry on puffing.

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 23/11/2013 23:18

I stink of mint! I bought chewy mentos at the start of the week. 3 packs of 5. I have none left Grin

I think if I didn't have those 2 cigs in the house I'd have been and bought some already. Sounds strange but its easier when I know they are there

I smoked for 28 years. Tried to stop quite a few times including hypnosis, and reading books, but only managed to give up 'standard' cigarettes completely by using e-cigs, then switching to vaping. Good incentive is, its cheaper than real cigs by miles and you and your home no longer smell of cigarette smoke. I also feel so much healthier. Although it is still smoking; but for me I like smoking anyway, its more a hand to mouth thing. Even though giving up real cigs didnt work for me in the past I found what made me hold out the longest back then was, eating grapes straight from the fridge. & chewing gum. No advice re. getting over food cravings tho, mine were Pringles and Walkers smoky bacon crisps Smile

MistressDeeCee · 23/11/2013 23:20

I havent had a 'real' cig for almost 10 months now.

VerySmallSqueak · 23/11/2013 23:21

I gave up cold turkey 3 years ago.
But I had given up cold turkey for both pregnancies so I knew I could do it.
The trick is just not to accept it's hard.

Tbh I didn't find the patches, inhaler thingie,or gum made any difference whatsoever - and the patches made me come out in a really sore rash, the inhalers gave me hiccups, and the gum tasted rank (and I cn't get why chewing gum is anything like having a fag!)

SPsWouldCatFishNev · 23/11/2013 23:23

I tried the chewing hum. It was rank and allergic to patches.

I might go down e-cig route. I need something to do with my hands, that's why I have a pen.

SPs my late Grandad only managed to give up his 60 a day habit that he'd had for about 60 years by keeping a pack in the house so it was a safety net and he knew he had them if he 'needed' them.

He was successful at giving up.

It's different horses for different courses.

Tiredmumno1 · 23/11/2013 23:31

If you find yourself struggling SP, then maybe you should go down the vaping route Smile.

Lots of support on another thread for those going through it Smile.

Lots of luck
