To say 'bum bum'

TinkerTailorSerialNameChanger · 23/11/2013 16:27

To 18 month old DS
As in 'I'm going to bite your bum bum', 'lets change your bum bum' etc
Apparently it is not good as DS now says it too and if he does it at school his teacher will mark him out as one of the 'naughty children' (says MIL, the obvious expert in these matters)

Yes it's nonsense and I could easily say bottom, it's just something I've always said to him.

One of the naughty children? Confused. If bum bum is the worst he comes out with when he starts school consider yourself lucky...

Floggingmolly · 23/11/2013 17:54

Grin at children using bum as a swear word!!!!

RevengeWiggle · 23/11/2013 17:54

She's being strange, bum isn't a naughty word. My nan used to get very offended if we said "blow off" even in an innocent way so we used to try and fit it into sentences wherever possible.

AndHarry · 23/11/2013 18:22

We say 'bottom'. I also say 'bum bum bum' because DS thinks it's hilarious! Now that you've made me think about it properly, I suppose 'bum bum' is rather vulgar. Oh well.

MotherIsTheBestBet · 23/11/2013 18:52

Don't mind "bum", but "bum bum" makes me want to rip my own ears off.

BrightestStarInTheSky · 23/11/2013 18:56

We say bum bum too. My DS also uses it to tell me he's gone to the toilet.

Meglet · 23/11/2013 18:58

colleys girls find it funny too.

The dc's are both at school and I still say bum-bum. Or use a posh voice and say "B'tom".

Don't like "fart" though. We have to say "pop".

MotherIsTheBestBet · 23/11/2013 19:00

Should say I wouldn't object to it in a toddler (I'm not that harsh), just in anyone over the age of, say, four.

lifesgreatquestions · 23/11/2013 19:01

Say what you like. MN can be far too opinionated about what one should and shouldn't say!

puntasticusername · 23/11/2013 19:35

Tinker Rofl, "fucky fuck fuck", I'm totally teaching DS to say that before he next goes to his grandparents'...

MotherIsTheBestBet · 23/11/2013 21:34

You're right lifes, but if you can't be opinionated about this kind of thing on aibu what is the point of it?

Bum bum makes me want to scream but that's because DD is 7 and has picked it up from a friend. Nothing at all wrong with it for a preschooler. Bum is fine at any age.

FunnyRunner · 23/11/2013 22:23

Another bum-bum household here. Your MIL is quite mad! :o

Tunnock that is great :o

POTC · 23/11/2013 22:30

I'm obviously old-school too then because I really dislike children saying bum! I've always taught mine to say bottom and if they say bum I've reminded them I don't like that and asked them not to say it.

SupermansBigRedReindeerNose · 23/11/2013 22:32

Bottom sounds ridiculous from a childs mouth it's such a grown up sounding word, bum is a childs word. I tend to say 'see mum your stinky' rather than bum though Grin

comedycentral · 23/11/2013 22:51

Just roll your eyes at her & say what you want.

nopanicandverylittleanxiety · 24/11/2013 00:12

yanbu

if any teacher told my dc off for use of it then I would tell her/him to jog on (i can't imagine a teacher doing it though)

Valpollicella · 24/11/2013 00:15

I tell DS aged 7 I will BITE his BUTT BUTT if he doesn't get dressed quick enough

Que him being a 'minion'

Whatever works...

gingerchick · 24/11/2013 00:15

My daughter calls her dodi a bum bum because she can't say dum dum it can be confusing but its not rude

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/11/2013 14:15

Grin at bottom being such a grown-up sounding word!

Surely it's not no more 'grown-up' than leg or arm or hand or foot. It's just the name of a part of our bodies!

themaltesefalcon · 24/11/2013 14:20

I believe the only acceptable word is posterior.

If you were my DIL, I would reprimand you severely.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 24/11/2013 14:27

Another bum bum household! Didnt realise it was so common

But i have been told off for horsey, doggy, birdy etc to DS2 by older relatives. Even though they know DS1 has managed to master the art of horse, dog, bird well before his third birthday Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 24/11/2013 14:30

Actually though, I remember bum was included as a "rude word" when I was in school. Also DS2 came home from nursery this week and told me he'd fallen over on his bottom. Never used the word before, so I guess he must have been corrected?

ImperialBlether · 24/11/2013 15:05

I'll never forget a woman opposite me in the post natal ward saying to her baby, "Let's change your shitty arse..."
