As the title says, thinking of the likes of Barbour, Hunter, Toms and going back a few years to Burberry, and all counterfeit! I'm sticking to my Bench and Skechers!

OP posts:
custardo · 21/11/2013 08:31

it is a derogatory term, if it is true that only mumsnet get wound up about it, that is sad

tracypenisbeaker · 21/11/2013 08:34

Isawitchcackling I agree, to me chav is less about the financial aspect and more about the attitude/lifestyle. Like yesterday when someone with a bandana round their face (obviously wanted to be accused of looking like a shoplifting thug) let their dog curl out a massive shite onto the pavement and didnt bother to clean it up. Or the guy I seen a few weeks ago punch another guy inthe nose and then the other guy threatened to 'fucking stab him with a blade'. These people are vile chavs. Money has nothing to do with anything, loads of people (myself included) grew up with little means, doesnt excuse you from being a antisocial dickhead. I wouldnt label someone based on the clothes they wear though.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 21/11/2013 08:45

I wear Asda clothes...there's no hope for me is there....?

elliegoulding · 21/11/2013 08:50

Doesnt the word 'chav' originate from people in 'Chatham'? (who must have been stereotypical of a 'chav')

As far as I am concerned being a chav is nothing to do with money or class, its about being an irritating antisocial twat, unless I have the wrong end of the stick.

so unless you fit the above description wearing Burberry or 'Asda jeans and a badly fitting second hand coat ' doesnt gain you automatic entry to the chav club! Wink Wink Wink

mrsjay · 21/11/2013 08:53

round here the chavs were Bench just saying Grin

Crowler · 21/11/2013 08:53

Chavs do not "Hijack" brands. High end labels attempt to expand their customer base by producing products for the mass market. Get a fucking grip.

I don't agree with this. High-end labels seek to avoid the mass market, surely?

An exception may be perfume.

Tiredemma · 21/11/2013 08:54

Lol @ skechers

Crowler · 21/11/2013 08:56

I suspect I'm a bit detached from brand mania because my children are not yet teenagers. Is this how people become aware of what's popular and what's too popular?

mrsjay · 21/11/2013 09:02

not a clue crowler although one of my teens had sketcher shoes for school they so were not cool apparently,

3asAbird · 21/11/2013 09:05

I think goady fuckers my fave mumsnet word.

To me chav is style/attitude more so than money as all these brands now cost quite a bit of money so they clearly have money unless they nicked it.

Many years ago did work experience in house fraser and fashion manager said some brands like tommy hilfiger were nothing but trouble as they had high street value and demand.

At daughters last school some parents were flashy and brands really are a status. A lot of brands I guess sell an aspirational image so if low income live on council estate then just maybe these brands make them feel happier im just summising maybe im talking crap,

I do have some hunters brought 2nd hand july so unsure i will stand the test of time doubt would have brought them new.

Guess they the new uggs.

Hollister have said they only want the pretty youth wearing their clothes.

My well off freind says joules has gone to the dogs since mass market even in next book.Find most next addicts bit ott and chavvy and hate way next has to have label on it saying next sure they have some ok bits but they not that cheap.

I have been looking for new winter coat and struggling.

The joules one is flippin £160 and does not mention what the down count is.

Hubby knows bit about outdoor brands and says northface is primarily fashion and all the wel off people in the know pick berghaus, merrelyl or rab .

Never got the obsession with pandoras.

Apple attracts high end media types but also chavs so has broad appeal I guess.

Only brand im not keen as 1)im too old")dont like and no 3 bit chavvy is superdry.

Wen I was a kid it was all doc martins and kickers.

Im so bloody bored of seeing converse.

I think some brands get overexposed and seem dated fast.

If its quality I spend the money.

normally theres highs street copies of most things.
daughters tesco quilted jacket looks as nice as joules one.

I try not be a sheep and if i like it dont care about the brand.

But I buy a lot 2nd hand now.

Toms not keen on.
adult crocs no really.

dident lilly allen really big up chav credentials when really she went pubic school and was never short of few bob.

imofftolisdoonvarna · 21/11/2013 09:15

I kind of know what you are saying op - for example Christian louboutins used to be seen as very high end/exclusive. That was until the plebs (ie. me- my sister bought me a pair for my birthday a few years ago) got their hands on them. Now they have become a little bit devalued and are certainly not seen as as classy as they once were.

Did you know that the brand Chanel never allow any of their merchandise to be sold at a discount anywhere. You will find most top brands discounted somewhere at some point (eg. On the outnet or at places like biscester village) but rarely if ever Chanel. Anything they don't sell in their stores....they burn! Shock All purely to prevent their brand ever getting into the 'wrong' hands and becoming devalued.

cuttingpicassostoenails · 21/11/2013 09:20

I was told that chav meant Cheltenham Average and was a term used by the girls at Roedean when referring to the local people who were not of their class.

Hunter wellies are not what they used to be.

Barbour, on the other hand is probably the best outdoor gear available.

cuttingpicassostoenails · 21/11/2013 09:21

Not Roedean... Cheltenham Ladies College.

MyMILisfromHELL · 21/11/2013 09:25

So what exactly is a chav in your opinion OP?

It's a strangely UK thing. Burberry is highly regarded/wanted in Europe/Japan. Certain firms keep their supplies tightly controlled with outlets (if any) regulated. Think Chanel/Hermes/Louis Vuitton/Cartier (basically the LVMH group),Oakley.Rolex. others like Ralph Lauren/Lacoste become more popular so they cater for that with bigger/more stores and letting stuff get sold in outlets. I'm sure Gucci has certain outlets in Italy but v.discreet. Still if you have the money you can buy anything, just certain brands get picked up on. Currently it's Ugg/Hunter/North Face/Pandora whereas the cognoscenti would think Le Chameau/Patagonia/Tiffany. Some brands love the attention eg Hollister whereas Chanel wouldn't

thegreylady · 21/11/2013 10:27

The upper classes will take over Matalan and Primark next!

Crowler · 21/11/2013 10:33

I think Chanel has done very well by avoiding brand dilution.

3asAbird · 21/11/2013 10:36

A lot of high end brands bring out lower priceed range ie

chloe -see

im sure theres few others.

bourjouis makeup is made by channel.

also theres diffrence between designer dressy up outfit or tailoring compared to sporty casual peices.

I actually think retail fashion in uk is tricky market right now.

Phillip green arcadia has shut down loads of stores an brands like dorothy perkins /evans now becoming concessions top shop seems to have done well beacise of celebs and taking it to the us.

Theres plenty mid priced to high end brands I wonder how they last in the downturm

brands such as

the white company
jojobebe
reiss
hobbs
whistles
jones the bootmakers
all saints.
cath kidston/

Im sick of boden.

I never liked jane norman as veiwd it as bit tarty and chavvy looking.

Overexposure really will kill some brands in the long run.

anyone reccomend some nice wellies that are not hunters or joules?

dd1 goes quite affleunt state primary an teh brands in playground are lesser know brands but still expensive.

I still would love tiffany jewellry and like some designer it bags.

change bags and buggies are same sort of thing.

If i see a big and bouncy pram size of small van i run a mile.

Lots smugaboo people but im bored of bugaboo.

celebrities play huge part i guess in making the brands attrative.

Bumblequeen · 21/11/2013 10:41

I think there is more pressure for people from poorer backgrounds to be seen wearing certain brands of clothes. They are probably more respected/accepted by their peers.

I remember being at school over 20 years ago and when a peer came in wearing Naf Naf, Kickers, Oilily others would gather round as if to congratulate them. Appearance meant everything.

Personally I do not like any item of clothes with labels plastered all over them. I think it is tacky.

3asAbird · 21/11/2013 10:54

I remembered the word diffusion lines but do wonder if they subtract from brands value as if littlewoods and next book stock hunters and joules .That means lots getting into debt for sake of a brand.

Other brands above are ssociated with middleclass.

Quite interesting how class and labels interact but think times are changing.

Lots posh cars in aldis and lidls carparks these days.

Pressure on teens with brands always been there I guess.

But when talking about adults think uk has become more materialistic and image driven last few years.

Japenese love their labels but dress very different to uk market.

shadylane · 21/11/2013 10:59

Bench is a shit brand. Sketchers were modelled by britney for years and she's hardly a delevigine. STFU you sound like a knob.

3asAbird · 21/11/2013 11:06

My little girls have sketchers twinkle toes they very flashy dont think they any more chav than leili kelly both brabds market themselves to young kids during ads on kids tv channels so veiw both as brands for tweenies.

I think theres regional variations in brands too as sued to be lots brands only availiable in big cities but now most more widely avaliable.

I remember uni in cardiff quite a clubby city and what brands were popular.

Also for some reason mary portas sticks in my mind her original queen shops series on bbc she went to few small town boutiques one was up north and how popular some brands like lipy were for night out.
